  1. Just a thought. BSA is just too darn political........ Teach your leaders one way, the best know current techniques. Do it once. Require a refresher every 5 years if you must. Just curious, who is Outdoor Adventures?????? I would like to know who owns them and what there "expertise" and experience is.
  2. sorry bout that it was the only forum I could open when the attack was underway.
  3. I think a lot of things hurt scouting..... Video games and electronics Travel and Rec Sports Boring program Going from a Program that awards you for everything, to a program that rarely awards you. Religion Peer Pressure The Gay issue Scouting is uncool.....got this from a boy who plays flute in his schools band?!????? We can blame a lot of things for decline in membership.......We, SM's, need to train the Boys to lead a program that they want.
  4. I am a woodford reserve kinda guy......or a nice jack single barrel.
  5. Well scout your making some assumptions. Your assuming that there is a council or district event scheduled......Did it ever occur to you that the Pack could just be renting a campsite. The OP did not give us enough details to draw any conclusions or offer recommendations. You are correct that it could be anything from cafeteria style dining to what I said which is cook for your family.
  6. I didn't get nailed but I use firefox, it lit up as did the virus scanner. I was concerned someone less vigilant would get their machine screwed up

  8. Depends on the group.......One pack I was in cooked only as a family, current pack cooks as a group. ya check with your outing leader as to the plans.

  12. There is a really nasty redirect attack hosted by Scouter right now. It is a fake antivirus attack. Could you fix it?????
  13. boy is that elaborate...... Seems like a nightmare to manage.....
  14. Brent.....All, well most of my bad experiences are interactions with adults. Take most of the adults out of scouting it would be outstanding. Horrible training experiences were woodbadge and powderhorn. Outstanding training was IOLS and OWL. Great parent experiences, one mom in tears after crossover because I was not going to be her sons den leader any more. Bad parent experiences, Dad hitting den leader and excuses as to why they cannot bring their son to scouts. Great youth experiences, I received several thank you letters from boys for all the effort with fund raising and arranging our webelos advancement weekend. Bad youth experiences, boys that cry at a drop of the hat and bullying. I forgot...the creative language Great leader experiences the group of boys rushing in to tell me a story or chat with me to the point I cannot even hear my self think. Bad leader experiences CM running off with webelos den leader whom he was not married to.....nearly killing the pack. The boys and good memories keep me going......A weekend with the troop will recharge my battery's for a month. When I am beat down and just about to throw in the towel something happens......After the fist throwing at the pinewood, the young man who won turned that entire day around for me.....made it all worth it. A the justice.....That car had to have 300 carpet miles on it. Still makes me smile.
  15. Been to a few of those.......Here is my gear, far superior to what your going to have........ Psssst, just an fyi....REI stands for "Really expensive inside." I have ran into a lot of "Scouting outdoor experts" That think just because there gear didn't come from one of the box stores that makes them an expert. Just means they have a lot of money to spend. Woodbadge, they did a presentation on Backpacking stoves.....it was the absolute dumbest things I have ever witnessed. All of the stoves were brand new to the point of having boxes behind them and never looked like they had been lit. They even taught incorrect information to the group. I was amazed. When I teach outdoor gear to the troop, pack and crew. I like to show the spectrum of possibilities. I would show the spongebob sleeping bag, and then the montbell bag. But I would have shown the differences between the two.. Construction, fill, zippers, air baffles, shape...I would have also shown the $40 Dick's or Gander Mountain Bag..... As a trainer my job is to provide information and let the student decide for themselves.
  16. Say it was your son who made the mistake?????? You had spent $500-1000 to send him to Philmont...... would your opinion be the same.
  17. That award with all the rockers looks more challenging that earning an Eagle. showed it to my son and told him what I thought. He want to earn it and all the rockers.......He is going to call his buddy tomorrow and try to talk him into doing it with him.
  18. Do it outside.....setup a tent, pinewood track, projects from the year. bring all the boys. Have the boys playing a group game. FUN FUN FUN is the pitch.
  19. Actually campmasters don't belong to a particular unit......they are the people you check in and out with at just about every boy scout camp I have been too. I found a job description.....never seen a campmaster do any of it. Usually I have see them riding around on the gator or pickup, drinking coffee and checking the KYBO for TP. I am sure they do more....Just never seen it. http://www.scouting.org/scoutsource/BoyScouts/Campmasters/02.aspx
  20. I think he is looking for G-rated romance. Lady and the tramp.....thinking spaghetti scene.
  21. Ya, I hear ya. The B.U.F.F. kinda guy I am..... I don't get patted down.....ever.
  22. If I want resources, google is great. I would start listing ticket ideas, Just rough ideas. You will not get 5 high adventure ticket items if your TG does his job, you may get one or two if your lucky. A large number of my fellow course participants had their tickets already done when they showed up. A lot about the course I took was not a typical course from what I gather. There were a lot of personal relationships between TG's, Staff and some of the participants. A number of the participants were "schooled" in the games and what to do and when. One group even knew there patrol before lunch the first day.......Opps, I am not adding to the conversation in a positive manner.
  23. Powder horn was a complete waste of time too. We spent time doing the cope course. we spent time riding mountain bikes, we spent time talking about backpacking. We talked about shooting sports.....lots of talk. And it was expensive.....$300. I felt ripped off. I did get the chrome powderhorn for my pocket..... If you really want high adventure training sign up for a course thru NOLS or national outdoor leadership skills. They are the real deal, not some scouter who proclaims themselves a subject matter expert. Woodbadge is about as high adventure as the cub scouts. pretty boring stuff. If you are looking for high adventure training this is not for you......
  24. I feel cheated, I fly a lot and have never been felt up.
