  1. I have had success using most of the reqs as trivia questions... we almost always have trivia time at the end of Den meetings, and these questions are perfect for that. I just check the names off as they get the questions correct.
  2. $100 a year, paid quarterly. Camping trips are monthly and range from $15 to about $150 if it is skiing or rafting. We usually have 3 summer "big trips". We have a pretty good scholarship fund in memory of one of our Scouts who dies in a car accident a few years ago.
  3. well yeah, but at 12 years old he isn't making it in a vacuum. He decided on NOAC.
  4. SSScout, love it! I had a similar weekend last fall with Webelos... one of the rainiest weekends ever... 2 Webelos sharing a tent were doing ok but went in and out of their tent too often and though it did not leak, they were tracking water and mud every time, and by bedtime it was uninhabitable (and they were a little short in the dry clothes department)... so I pulled up my suburban, folded down the seats, and let them sleep in the back. One was surprised I didn't let them use my tent- he felt it would have been fine for me and his Dad (male leader) to share a tent! As far as what the OP shoudl tell the SM.. "thank you" is a good beginning. This is far from a reasonable reason to switch Troops!!
  5. ugh, they advance regardless of what they did or did not do. They will be Wolves even if they did nothing at all. Not earning the Tiger Badge is a different story. Ask the opposing leader "what is best for the boys", which should ALWAYS be the deciding question. Did they Do Their Best to get everything done? Then don't be a ____ about it!
  6. we made it, now we have to decide seabase or NOAC?
  7. in our Troop it is up to the Scout and parents to decide all about the program. My son's had an ASM MC, Eagle charge by a youth, and most of the rest was spoken by his SM. No, there are no rules or guidelines, it is simply a celebration done in whatever way the Scout and family want to do it!!
  8. I've been pretty successful at overcoming the public speaking thing, partially thanks to FOS. My best advice is to be genuinely enthusiastic and really let it show, and to find a way to make them laugh at least once. Good luck!
  9. We also didn't use elections until Webelos. We originally had a foosball tournament and the winner went first, the subsequent Denners went in alphabetical order.
  10. maybe I'm misunderstanding. What I meant was where you said all your boys earned AoL at the end of Web I year... mine will not be eligible to have the age/grade required. They will still be 9 years old (one 10) and in 4th grade.
  11. Jblake, my boys can't because they will not be over 10 (well one will) or out of the 4th grade. How do you manage that... is it a different type of year or different age groups in different areas of the country?
  12. but, Basement, also I would not expect the doctor to call her stupid. It just isn't scoutlike.
  13. When I was CM, I read the ceremony. I tried to get someone else to do it but they all insisted it would mean more from me... although TBH I was sobbing and it would have been a relief.
  14. agree... I just can't fathom how a Scout who goes to a traditional school could possibly get over 100 merit badges in 3 years!?! I wish the kid himself would publicly talk about his experience!
  15. PS.. Seriously how many scouts AIM for earning all 134 meritbadges? In my lifetime, I have met a total of zero. my younger son is one. He will need to step up his pace a little if he is to be successful, but that is his goal.
  16. we have life-to-Eagle seminars once or twice a year, free, and Eagle coach training once or twice a year, also free. I wonder what they are providing that makes for such a charge?
  17. haha I also thought that was what the thread would be about!
  18. haha we had one called the Secret Cubmaster's Club. Every time any 2 adults had a conversation, we referred to it as "one of those secret Cubmaster meetings". Funny that others have similar things!
  19. my hubby is a convicted felon, and he comes to CoH etc. although he is not a leader of any kind. The red flag to me was when the OP said he "seems to" spend time with other offenders.???
  20. the difference here between this kid and a homeschooled kid is that this kid is not 7. I say have him wait... it may save you a headache down the road when he wants to earn his AoL and the same types of questions arise.
  21. oh okay thanks fro clarifying. I also replied to you a while ago when you took exception to me camping with Webelos in my backyard, but you never replied (to my knowledge). I don't think I formatted or replied in the right spot because the site was acting up, but if you could take a look and answer I would appreciate it.
  22. Because it is clearly being used as an insult... not just a comment but a putdown. Maybe it's just me. In related news I hate calling adults "helicopters", not because it insults actual helicopters, but because they can just be called "adults" or "leaders"... "helicopter" is derogatory. I freely admit I'm probably too sensitive!!
  23. if you meant "like the OP", I would like your opinion on how I am micromanaging his Scout career.
  24. just want to throw in 2 cents about terminology. I hate it when people refer to unsatisfactory Troop programs as "Webelos III". It is insulting to the Webelos program itself. Thank you.
