  1. Thank you, Eamonn. I couldn't have said it better myself.(This message has been edited by Mr.Mal)
  2. Where does the money go that your "cuss cup" generates? Hopefully, there isn't enough in it to set up a scholarship program (wink)
  3. I covered this subject as part of my patrol's presentation at Wood Badge recently. With your "cuss cup", it sounds like it is OK to break the 11th point (and other points) of the Scout Law by paying a fine. Is this REALLY the message that you want to give your Scouts, that in order to make it "OK", all you have to do is to pay a fine?. We are ALWAYS Scouts, whether we are in uniform or not. Yes, it if fun to do, and it sort of gets the point across, but wouldn't it be better if the person that used the offending lanugage would stand before the troop and apologize? What would you think would be more effective? A fine where no one sees? or Standing up, admitting that you were wrong and moving on from there? Just my $0.02(This message has been edited by Mr.Mal)
  4. It was hosted by York-Adams Area Council.
  5. Just finished the outdoor portion. The rest of it will NEVER end. One word to those that helped make it: AWESOME Time to get working on the Ticket! John Mal. I used to be an Owl...
  6. If the troop dodn't follow the "letter of the law", then what would be the standard?
  7. Let's see...To much for a locked display case? How about: A project for woodworking merit badge? A project for some scouts to do for the troop? Donations from some familys in time and materials? etc. Just some thoughts
  8. I like the wall chart, however, to keep it's data secure, how about installing it into a locked wall display case? That way, the troop scribe has a key, as well as the SM and CC. In doing it this way, the advancement data will be secure (no inadverant data entries), as well as keeping it protected from damage. Everyone will be able to see the others progress and to be able to help one another to achieve their ranks (A Scout is helpful). This should NOT be the primary source of advancement info, simply a display means, but if the primary advancement gets lost or damaged, this would be the backup. The chart should have when the Scout joined as well as when each requirment was signed off and by whom.(This message has been edited by Mr.Mal)
  9. You NEED to talk with the boy's parents to find out if the boy is on medication, and if he is, find out if he has taken it before the meetings. The medications tend to wear off around late afternoon to early evening (if he is taking it for the school day). Explain to the parents what the problem is and find out what they do to help their son.
  10. I have used it, and I like it. Sometimes it is tough to hold the badges in place while sewing them, so I use the product and then when I have the time (1 hour/week), I sew on those badges that are going to be permanent. For removal of those that are held on wsing the Badge Magic product, check out the removal process, directly from the company's own web site: http://www.badgemagic.com/info_pages/index.cfm?fuseaction=all&parent_id=34
  11. Thank you, It is great to be part of the brotherhood of Scouting here and to know that we are all here to help each other so we can help the boys. After all, isn't that one of the parts of the Scout Law, "A Scout is Helpful"? Again, thanks.
  12. Greetings, Although I am new to these fourms, I am not new to Scouting. I joined Boy Scout's in 1965 in the Baltimore Area Council, Troop 774. I received my Eagle in 1972 in Post 774. I was a JASM in the troop and Post President and then Post Advisor. My son decided that he wanted to join Scouts and he joined a troop in Southern PA. I joined the troop committee and then earlier this year, they asked me to become Assistant Scoutmaster, of which I accepted. When I was in Scouts, my father joined the troop committee and then they asked if he would become Assistant Scoutmaster, which he did. He then went on to become Scoutmaster, and since there was more than one John in the troop, they asked if he would be willing to go by the name "Mr. Mal." In my troop where I'm Assistant Scoutmaster, there is also another John in the troop as Assistant Scoutmaster (do you see where this is going)? The Scoutmaster of my troop asked me if I would be willing to go as "Mr. Mal" to diferenate me from the other John. Anyway, I am going to be starting WB NE-IV 183 in a few days (April 21) and I am looking forward to that. I am also going to be relying on the fine folks here for advice on assisting the Scoutmaster of my troop, as well as helping those who need my help. It's all for the boys. Thanks John Mal.
