Here is the report. Should be interesting to see their membership and unit numbers. If there's pent up demand it should show this fall. If not that should show too. http://philadelphia.cbslocal.com/2015/06/19/philadelphia-council-bypasses-national-boy-scouts-leadership-with-acceptance-of-gays/

Scouting Doesn't Have A Chance In The New World Order
Gone replied to Eagledad's topic in Issues & Politics
I'm moving to England or elsewhere in Europe. At least they embrace being socialists rather than pretending to be something they're not. -
Until the policy changes its still on the books.
-
I'm going to start bringing beer to camp outs. Maybe my council can change the policy.
-
Hmmmm. How can a council allow something national forbids? I hear the schism cracking wider.

Sorry, I should have put "Lodge" in my comments. I know those specific models are still made in their US foundry. I took a tour last summer...pretty cool...and you won't get out of there without spending $150 if you are a cast iron freak like me. I could have sworn I typed Lodge in my reply...must be getting old. Sorry for the confusion.
-
You can get the foundry seasoned cast iron and carbon steel ovens made in the US. The ceramic ones are from China. Having been there (China) and seen their manufacturing practices first hand, I tend to steer away from those products. They say they follow Lodge's "strict code of quality" but I'm not buying it...literally.

BSA has a long track record of being late to the game. I don't trust their ability to articulate and document their intentions in this or any other matter. As I recall the unit lead stepped down.

Scouting Doesn't Have A Chance In The New World Order
Gone replied to Eagledad's topic in Issues & Politics
When Bush made that speech where he noted a new world order, he was specifically addressing the end of the bipolar system manifested by the Cold War. He noted that the "new world order" would be characterized by the peaceful settlement of disputes through international courts, universal human rights, international criminal justice, and free trade and investment. Moreover, that the new order emphasized international rule of law; the idea that international law and legal institutions would be the major source of global organization. It was the Grassy Knoll and tinfoil hat wearing crowd that ran with the statement to subjugate it to the realm of conspiracy theory. -

Not on Twitter...one can follow without being "friends". -
Absolutely!!! ANY type of tool you use that is tech-based!! Interesting. Did you use the demo account or did you pay the $20/month for the service for Callingpost?

Yeah, but King Porus would have been "following" Alexander and headed him off well before he entered Punjab. -
No one else is using any technology in unit management?

We ran in to the same issue with our PLC a while back. The SM kept encouraging the PLs to "phone their patrol". The PLs would email. An event went understaffed. Next PLC the SM reminded them to use the phone. SPL did a phone tree exercise to illustrate the effectiveness for the PLs. Even did the game where the SPL calls the PLs Sunday and says "Bring a spoon to the meeting this week, tell your patrol." PLs, rather than call their patrols, sent emails....50% return on the request. The ONE PL that *did* use the phone got a near 90% result with guys bringing spoons that week. Point was made. I think kids these days would rather text and email than call anyone.

Scouting Doesn't Have A Chance In The New World Order

I think the new basis of the American dream is social engineering and income re-distribution. The old American dream where one is left free to do what they want as long as they don't infringe on the rights of others has been dismantled by both parties over the last 20+ years. I am going to use the HUD vouchers to move in to a multi-million dollar neighborhood. That ought to change the make up the neighborhood. -
A unit sent an honor guard to march in a gay parade. The unit lead and the TC got in trouble with national for allowing their unit to wear the Class A at the event, deemed political by national. I think we all agree that national puts this prohibition out there (of wearing the uniform at certain functions) and then they do not list out entirely which functions are/are not allowable. Further, they compound the problem by saying they will hold unit leads accountable for deciding when to wear the uniform...without giving them said list. Typical of national. I agree that if the unit lead uses good judgement and avoids events that are political in nature they will likely avoid national's wrath. Sadly, some unit leads' judgement is not what it should be, hence the need for national to make things clearer.

You lucked out. As @@Stosh and others have pointed out, resumes are a very targeted document. You get about 4" of space and 30 seconds to catch someone's attention out of a pile of other candidates. They are usually looking for professional reasons to hire you that separate you from the stack. The "extracurricular" stuff can be done in the interview...*if* you feel it gets you anything, otherwise leave it out. We all volunteers serious hours in BSA which is very laudable, however, not everyone is going to see that as a positive when it comes to business. It may, in fact, raise other questions you don't want raised. Can he work weekends if needed on short notice? How will he manage working late during the week if he has to run a scout troop? Will he travel or make excuses why he can't? I *DO* think you can mention your BSA affiliation (or any other that might now make sense) by noting it generically (e.g., donate over 20 hours/month to community service, etc.). That would get the point across that you do "other stuff". Then in the interview if they pick up on it and ask you, then decide if you want to mention BSA by name or just generically.
-
Depends. The unit lead is who BSA will go after. Most events are probably benign. I suspect the obvious ones Stosh noted are tone avoided.
-
@@packsaddle I've answered your question. You don't like the answer. Oh well. The guy had THREE YEARS to fix his problem. He didn't. I think 50 years after the fact is a bit too foregiving. I'm done on this issue. You may not like my answer but I have given an answer.

We are talking real world here, not BSA world. No one cares about your BSA affiliations, knots or awards UNLESS you are going for a job where that stuff matters. Be real, if I am hiring you as an accountant I want to know if you can do the job and leave the volunteers stuff for the discussion. Any head hunter will tell you to leave ANYTHING off your resume that might be controversial. You might not like it but that's the real world.

Scouting Doesn't Have A Chance In The New World Order

You cannot "fix" a program that is family-based and relies heavily on volunteers who have the time to help. The last census reported 24 million kids without their biological father living at home. Did not see a stat for if those households had a step-father involved, but several groups have compiled stats based on census data for single-parent households by race. Hard to break that color barrier when mom or dad are by themselves, covering 2 or more kids and trying to make ends meet. If it weren't for every parent thinking their kid was going to be the next Pele, Willie Mays, Larry Byrd or Tony Romo, most sports would see similar racial levels as BSA I think. But parents think Bobby might get a scholarship if he's good enough. No one says that about BSA. -
Case Studies: Is Training Really Working?
Gone replied to Gone's topic in Wood Badge and adult leader training
Where does any of this mention how to resupply your crew on a long distance trek? Where does it mention how to plan a canoe trip? I think we've pointed out there are resources that do various things, but it's an Easter egg hunt to find what you need. Those who are interested and truly want to know can find this stuff, but that's NOT the majority of the adults out there. BSA could be doing better in this regard.
