  1. Thanks pchadbo.. My co-worker mentioned something about this and I was unable to find the article on it. I will not throw stones, simply make the comment that depending on your cell phone in those mountains is not a good idea.. Reception there is awful.. Also I don't think they stayed in one place, unless they kept the cell phone on and had the battery get eatten up by constant roaming.. They had reception and then lost reception, which might indicate they moved out of cell phone reach and were attempting to find their way out..
  2. Ok.. I am a training chair in a council where Test-out is out-lawed.. (I don't want to go there). But in the original thread the Training News article goes into the test-out, and how some councils were against it.. Then later in the article talks about one-on-one mentoring.. There is also discussion about a test out or opt out option for leaders. There are some concerns about the potential safety issues that come with lesser training, the lack of a connection to other Scouters, the importance of the patrol method, etc. On the other side there are those that say this can be very effective, or that some training is better than none. We are working on a formal, mentored, test-out option for districts and councils training teams to use, and we are monitoring councils that are already doing the test-out.... ... However, if a course is not available, tenured Scouters that can demonstrate all the basic outdoor camping skills for the Tenderfoot, Second Class, and First Class ranks may not need to take the full course. They should contact their district training chair and schedule a one-on-one mentoring session with a member of the training team. Many tenured leaders probably own the skills and should be able to adequately explain how to demonstrate each one to a member of the training team. The training team mentor should coach the individual through areas where additional help might be needed. Upon completion, the training team member should report the completion of training to the council office. Sounds very similar to test-out, but under a different name..? What say you?.. So, if I start up this one-on-one mentoring session (which is not out-lawed by my council) do you think I will get my hand slapped?? How would you see the one-on-one mentoring as being different then the test-out? How would you set up a one-on-one mentoring? They had a checklist for the test-out, but except for demonstrate all the basic outdoor camping skills for the Tenderfoot, Second Class, and First Class ranks there isn't much of a description on how to conduct this. I know there are a few that would love to do the test-out.. Just wondering if I could get a few through the mentoring especially two I personally know who just don't have time for the course(one is a firemen with weekend duty, one is just way to involved (in scouting things mostly) that scheduling just prevents it..)..
  3. In our neck of the woods, we are like Eagle90 (unless you take a specialty camp like "Trail to Eagle") only 3 merit badges in the morning, the whole afternoon is free time, filled with fun different things that are not MB related that you could sign up for as a patrol or troop.. Or don't sign up and just have "hang out" time.. This is in 3 summer camps that my son frequented while a scout.. There is a 4th summer camp that does do 5 (usually partial) MB.. One a day, but it was never my son's favorite for various reasons.. Seems weird to know there are camps out there where you need "schedule" your free time.. This just seems wrong in so many ways.
  4. Yeah, I don't think our ASM's (when they did their jobs) got in the way the the SPL to PL relationship thing.. It was more a way to make sure we didn't over-do on the ASM positions.. You don't need a SM and 15 ASMs to help guide 2 patrols, and since the commitee voted to pay for the SM & ASMs registration, some wanted to make sure there was a cap on how many we allowed into the position.. The SM had to pick his crew wisely, not just take anyone who wanted in.. I can't quite remember if they really had "a" patrol... But, if they did it was not obvious.. ASM's were expected to go on the majority of events (not just the few their sons choose to go on).. Helped with Summer Camp, Helped with judging compitions, Made sure the boys stayed on task, Helped with the signup sheets, car pool & Adult Leader food planning and purchasing before an event, and would stand in for the troop meetings/events that the SM could not be present.
  5. I agree with you that the lead guy to set expectations is the SM. Our troop was great under the leadership of the two SM's before the current one. The ASMs were just one per patrol, and they were expected to preform, and knew what their role and duties were and took pride in them. The current SM doesn't know how to delegate, and never set any expectations of anyone. Then because no ASMs were doing anything, they just allowed anyone who wanted to register as ASM thinking the more in numbers then someone will step up for an event. Well they got more signing up to be ASM, but they sit and do nothing along with the originals.. So now they have somewhere between 2 to 3 times ASMs to patrols, all still doing nothing. Not my problem how they fix things (if it is still possible to fix things), but it would be hard to not re-register them for not doing anything, when you never told them they were expected to be doing something.. We do have one ASM who cares and trys.. But he is also the current CM, so his priority is the pack first, then the troop and sometimes the events collided on dates being held. He spends more time being frustrated by the ineptitude of the other adults around him.. (I guess you could say he has now taken up the position my husband was holding last year.. One person attempting to give the boys a good program, while all the other adults fight and quarrel and trip over their own feet, or everyone elses feet.. And mess things up.) I guess they did reschedule the event the canceled last week for this weekend. Only 2 scouts went. Don't know if it was because no one plans for the events anymore as they expect them to be canceled, or if the fact it was the Saturday before the big NorEastern rolled in, and everyone was rushing to do their fall clean up that they should have had at least one more month to get to..)
  6. Just wondering.. I am still getting word of how my past troop is sinking into the tar pit of doom and destruction.. One thing I heard is that since the restarted this Fall they have already canceled both the planned trips due to no adult leadership.. It had been that way before my husband & son left that although both of them were on the committee, and they have the SM and about 5 ASM's.. It was counted on at least one of them to go or the event fell through due to no adult leadership. Now from what I hear even the SM is one of the people not able to make the trip.. So mine is a bad troop example.. But, it did not get this way overnight.. It got this way after years of not expecting or requiring the ASM's to do anything.. I don't know if they still do, but it use to be that the troop paid the registration cost of the SM & ASM due to them going above and beyond what a registered commitee member was expected to put in.. Don't know if they still do this, but boy these guy sure don't deserve the troop to pay for their registration any more..
  7. Scoutfish - Don't know, but I always wondered with something like that what it does to a gay marriage.. I mean if their spouse liked and outty and not an innie.. What happens when they then become an innie??
  8. Eagledad - if your going to pick on his lack of facts, but just pure emotion you forgot one.. there are studies showing that pedophiliac behaviors are more associated with homosexual men than heterosexual men. And no, right here at the computer as I'm typing, I do not have the proper reference, but it exists, so don't shoot the messenger (me). Dig it up; it's there. (He forgot to add.. Ignore the majority of research that have tested the theroy and found it wrong, while you try to hunt down some paper that will prove me right!!!)
  9. You can let them know you wish to move the pack, and if they were really as detached as you say, and thinking they were doing you the favor.. But are having doubts about it themselves, then you can most certainly leave on good terms, and if they sign the paper releasing to your new CO (not you, be that a newly formed Friends of.. or a real CO) the unit, then it is free and clear... It may just be as RW stated, they really don't see themselves as the owners or having any real claim to the unit, and not wanting to start-up or run anything on their own.. It is just that you may be surprised to find they have some sort of attachment to something.. Or if you have squirelled away a wad of cash (like the one unit with 22 thousand and their CO went bankrupt..).. They may see those $$ before their eyes.
  10. Just an FYI, because I do not see it mentioned.. When leaving a CO, you need to realize they own your unit.. You have to present them with something to sign (Which they may or may not) stating they are willing to release the money, equipment and unit number. Just be aware, that you may need to relinquish all that over to your CO if they do not choose to release it.. Or they may choose which parts they want and which they will let you keep. But, you can not just sneak off and not tell them that they had a right to keep this stuff. (Maybe you can slip them paperwork, and hope they sign it without reading it, but that isn't very scout-like.)
  11. Beavah brings up a very good point.. In order to "protect" children from "whatever" it is that LDS & Catholics fear about homosexuals.. The thing is to utilize these "scary" people in everything... So they can be "unregistered" parents acting as ASMs, going on every outing and event as parents, filling in as Den Leaders when no one will register for the position.. etc.. The thing is they are just too "threatening" to give them the respect they deserve by allowing them to wear a uniform and hold a title for the position they are working.. And they are just too "scary" to allow them to go through a security check to assure they are not pedophiles and rapists and other low life criminal types.. We just should allow them to do the job of the heterosexuals without recognition.. An unattentive CO would not even need to give approval of this action because it is all handing a parent authority of our children under the table (so to speak).. So with not Adult App.. the CO/COR need not approve. But this is not a practice that would put our children in jeopardy, is not discrimination, nor hypocritical in any way.. (This message has been edited by moosetracker)
  12. But, the problem is, someone made the decision for this baby with the XY chromosome, and could have chosen wrong.. So as the child grows they identify themselves as a boy, likes boys stuff and when they get old enough are attracted to women.. That is the problem with choosing for the child rather then waiting until they are old enough to choose fro themselves.. So they have the right chromosomes and identify themselves as a boy.. This is not a mental disorder, this is an adult who messed up this child by choosing to make them the wrong sex.. So you will acpt them into boy scouts.. Correct.. Because it is a birth defect, not a mental disorder.. (Although now being the wrong sex may cause the poor child some mental issues too..)
  13. In YOUR church it is about not accepting their sins.. In other churches it is about forgiving their sins, or not even seeing them as sins.(This message has been edited by moosetracker)
  14. SP - with alcohol & drugs.. No use on an outing, but you can use it all you want outside of scouts.. With smoking, it is go off and smoke over there.. Problem is, over there is a place that another group of scouts walk by and see you smoking.. And yes the CO has a right to not accept people who smoking, use drugs or alcohol.. But, they have a right to accept the smokers, and alcholics (or those who drink occasionally), or drug addicts (or those who use prescribed but normally questionable drugs).. The CO does not have a right to accept homosexuals, even if religion teaches respection ALL people, and treating ALL people as your neighbors.. If they had the right to make the decision for themselves, then this whole thread would not be here. Nor would about 10 other threads that sprang up this month alone.
  15. Actually the boy who is a cross dresser is on the other thread.. This thread is about girls who dress & act like boys.. Which morphed into intersex children, which morphed into a variety of differences based on gender identity issues.. So I guess when we morphed into all children with gender identity issues the boy on the other thread is part of that, but not all of that.. Anyway my comment is to the comment that they should all be rejected from cub scouts because they would all be a disruption.. Regardless of if it is a birth defect or something else..
  16. The kids will also point out the fat sloppy cub scout kid. Or the one with Autism, or the one who always has a drippy nose, or the retarded one.. So let us just do away with all that don't fit our mode of "normal", because all our scouts are bullies and we wouldn't want to teach them to be anything else.. Especially if we can't behave any better then that ourselves.
  17. For the children?? It ends when you can say you have done all you can to influence the lives of the children who come to you in a positive and caring way. Regardless of how screwed up the parents have made them, or they have made themselves.. Or regardless of the birth defects they are born with that no one but God had a hand in, but for some reason, offends your sensabilities.. For the Adults, as long as they don't promote their sexuality (regardless of their leanings), don't send up any red flags on their security checks and portrays what the CO deems a positive role model..
  18. Did anyone see the rule Trevorum is looking at?? "We the BSA discriminate against heteronormative children, and any other abnormalities that are rare or too weird for our ultra-conservative views".. If they are intersex then I would feel you need to allow the child in.. They need to figure out which sex they identify with, I guess if they never choose they can stay abnormal. But, if they do figure it out, I know they can go for surgery.. At least the one I knew had parents who were holding off on surgery until the child themselves were old enough to choose.. How can they choose if they are discriminated against and can't do boy or girl things, but just co-ed things??
  19. Remember this boy is not listing himself as transgender. At 7 he probably has yet to define that yet.. He is just a boy that like to dress and act and do things that girls do.. Therefore Tomboy is the equivalent..
  20. Yes.. The Monkees were gay.. And buried in their music is brainwashing subliminal messages of "G-G-G-Gay Pride!" Which as we know has turned everyone from that generation into closet cases of gays and lesbians.. And they in turn have hugged & rubbed up against every child born there-after turning them all gay too.. Even the conservatives, they are just too repressed to realize they have been turned.. So instead they lash out in homo-phobic fear, like the lady who posted this news article. We are all gay from 55 on down.. only the 60 and up are the last of the heterosexual breed.. Soon to die out, and then homosexuals will rule the world!!!!
  21. Scoutfish - your explanation is much more plausable.. I will need to keep myself and children away from monkees.. Novice_Cubmaster - was it the wearing of the little jewish hat? Or just the jewish accent that turns the children??
  22. I think the artical itself is hysterical !!! I am just very concerned if there is anyone who could take it seriously.. Flu shots cause autism!!! Wow, I was offered a free flu shot at work today.. I am so glad I turned it down! Autism at my age is worse then catching when your younger.. Oh wait, that's measles..
  23. The Blancmange - This has to be sarcastic! How can you take this crap seriously?.. It is not even showing examples.. Just one crazed lunatic spouting alot of wind.. And so up-tight that she couldn't even work up a serious "what-if" !!!! So someone nice with a rainbow pin on their shirt takes care of my child in the hospital!!! Wham!! My child is now a homosexual... Is that the rub-off theroy??? I went to Provincetown MA, and was looking at some christmas ornaments with rainbows on them!! Gee, had I brought one home, my child and his friends may all now be homosexuals! Wow! I am so glad I didn't do that!(This message has been edited by moosetracker)
  24. *IF* the Girl scouts group he joined does *ANY* camping, then he will probably get his own tent.. Remember it is rare to find a GS group that does do the camping piece. But, the question will be if they go to summer camp with a cabin where it has 8 or more to a cabin, it would be hard then to give him his own cabin..
  25. Half the girls act like boys look like boys and do boys things now.. Half because girlie stuff stinks and is boring.. The other half because most societies (including ours) still prefers boys over girls.. Girls dressing & acting like boys is called being a Tom-boy, and it is acceptable. It's the boys wanting to be girls that have people freaked out.. Oh.. Ick.. What's the matter with that one.. All girls who want to do boy things I would love to let in, but BSA would have to change policy.. And we all know that the conservative group would get their panties in a spin on that one..
