LOL.. Like I said, unless they have paper Leaders, how they rechartered in mid-December is beyond me.. The CM is duel role of Den Leader for the Web II.. I would imagine they got the parents of the Wolf & Bear to say they were the DL's.. Not sure if they are doing a lone scout program or not, but if they are I guess that makes the parent the DL.. But absolutely no committee and you need 3 (one as CC).. The lady wanted her ticket to be about saving the pack, but since she was not CC or CM, they said those were not within the scope of her position as DL.. So she had to find a ticket for the scope of her position..

Basement - again with the cross post.. There was a small mention.. The pack asked for help from the DE & DC (they are on the list), but have seen no help as of yet.. Also with the room setup.. Although it is a large room (It is sponsered by a church with a large function hall).. It is just IMO not a good setup.. I only saw one meeting, but the cubs were doing the den work and relatively set up like school, the Troop had the game and then worked on organizing a camping trip, but it seemed adult run.. I am sure the small cubs are not what the BS want to be in a room full of, and if you increase the cubs and get them to be fun and active, the BS will really not be happy with the situation.. 15 year old boys do not want to feel like they are enrolled in day care..(This message has been edited by moosetracker)

Well my recruiting idea is a little more elaborate then a recruiting night for scouting.. It is more of a Community program awareness day.. A place that has alot of programs for youth (and possibly) for Adults all on one day in one place.. Then let the activities all have their spot to shine.. Karate in that corner, dancers in that corner, guitar players in that corner, scouts in that corner etc. etc.. A scout night usually turns up a low number.. But, this would be attractive to parents who have kids who want them involved in something, but don't know what it is.. We may even get the kid interested in guitar playing, who sees the pinewood cars, or camping equipment and ends up wanting to enroll in guitar & cub scouts.. It also allows a place that might introduce older boys who come to see if there is any programs in their community they might be attracted to, but may not go to a "scout night" because of an incorrect image of scouts.. If we include Adult activities, then we are still getting our message out as to who we are and the program we run for Adults who are looking for activities for themselves, but either have kids, or very young kids who will be of age in a few years, or are future parents.. I thought of this, when our district started facing the fact that some of the school districts are not allowing anyone promote their programs in their schools.. I thought of the fact that while the BSA is bemoaning how hard it makes it for us to successfully recruit, it is just as hard for the other programs to recruit as well.. So why not find a way to band together and make an event that will intrest alot of people in the community to go to. It means a little more work to promote and organize, and may mean finding another group to help with the organization of it, possibly we may need to figuring out some form of charge if we need to rent the school space or spend for promotion of the event..

Basement our posts crossed.. I don't feel as ticket consilor responsible to help this individual.. I have felt and said in the past that as Training chair if a new pack or struggling pack needed supplemental training that was my responsibility.. My son putting his foot in it, and me not wanting him to get sucked dry by a bunch of parent leeches and have his grades drop, or flunk is kindof what has me feeling that I may need to get more involved then some supplemental training..

I was thinking more advisory too.. Come in to help with pep talks and training.. I will have to check with son, but my feeling is that a good time ending is when the Webs I cross over. At that time this lady is willing that after she crosses her son and the other boys over she wants to stay with the pack and move into CM roll.. But if the Pack has not grown by then 1 wolf & 1 bear & 1 adult leader does not make a pack... I am not even sure how the rechartered mid Dec with a cub master and a den leader, No committee at all???? Do they have paper names or what??? I was also thinking of making our stepping in be on condition that we have at least one parent of every boy commit to taking on at least on role or function in the pack, however minor that role is. My son is in his last semester at college and is know to come home with piles and piles of homework and work until the wee hours of the morning on it.. I just cannot see him taking on a Pack that will expect that he does EVERYTHING for them while they sit home and watch television.. Logically I know there is a mix of reasons for parents not stepping in.. From lack of self-confidence, to worry in a pack this needy that if they volunteer they will get dumped on, to a feeling of entitlement.. But, admittedly my fuse is short .. Wish it was longer .. But it is not .. So the best thing would be to go in and put down on the table a set of expectations that we would want from them to see that they are working on their own solution. I have an idea for a recruitment drive, but it would need to start with a volunteer of the cub scouts, one form the Boy scouts.. Then going to the town we live in (next door town) and seeing if we could not drum of interest from their cub/boy scout units to work together on the project.. If we could get 4 adults to work on it, it may be doable.. And the two towns share a high school, so that is already considered by the both communities as some place each town would go to for an event of function..

I am the ticket counselor for a lady with a sinking cub pack. (As well as just a district Training Chair).. She is in a Pack that has few kids. And only two Adult leaders. She is the Den Leader of WebsI. The other person is the Cub Master. Webs II - 3 cubs, Cub Master son is in this group and will cross over with his son. Webs I - 6 cubs, (ladies group) Bear - 1 cub (parent is doing lone scouting????) Wolf - 1 cub (parent is doing lone scouting????) Tiger - 0 cubs (had one, got in fight with Wolf and left). Her ticket is on working to cross her Webs over, prepared for boy scouting by slowly moving them into camping, being more independent from, the adults and doing their own den camping. But she is fearing being the single Adult leader of the group. Her pack has contacted the DE & the DC, for a while (they are "on the list").. But no help so far. We went to her den meeting once.. Found it a strange setup.. Troop & cub scouts all meet in one room.. Large room.. Small Troop, small Pack.. The Troop was doing their own thing.. I saw playing games and organizing for a campout. Small group, but from the little I saw, Webs III The Dens were at tables doing quite work.. We were there for my WB ticket person, who had asked my husband to come in and talk to the boys about starting to organize a campout similar to a patrol.. My husband has a lot of patience, but we are now use to Boy Scouts so he was seeing cross-eyed when leaving, as to the kids attention span Oh! and there were parents sitting around, not getting involved. Well last night at Round Table.. I was cornered by the lady I am ticket counseling for help. She fears having to take over as cub master, and not completing her ticket.. She does want to stay on with the pack when her son crosses over to try to build them back up again.. (She has high hopes and dreams).. So in steps my son, offering to take over as cub master for a brief time Ok, if not done right this sinking ship is going to pull him under.. And probably the rest of our family too.. I already see myself getting involved, to try to get this pack to get their parents to start doing the positions, and hopefully save my son.. Well I am sure it wont be long before husband & fianc are pulled into the quagmire I guess my son being ACM for a pack has learned something about Packs, but me, I know very little, nor does husband.. We have been away too long, memory is rusty and the program has changed.. So come up with ideas on a game plan for us guys!!!(This message has been edited by moosetracker)

A question sort of related, have the come out with an e-pub version, and started offering an either/or of form of delivery? It would be a nice move.. I know others have stated they got e-readers.. I just have a black & white one, so magazines is not for it.. But my son got a tablet, and I would imagine he would now become interested in the e-version.. Also I was suprised at how many people thought an Nook tablet or Kindle Fire was an appropriate gift for a child, so it would not be just adults reading it on a color e-reader. Maybe it is my income bracket, but although I thought it a fine gift for my 21 year old son, I would have not given him one if he was ten years old.. -
I love glimpses into history.. I understand the removal of the wet clothes & putting dry clothes on him.. But put on the ground face down and rolled around for a few minutes?? What was that about?? Also the picture is strange.. What is the young Girl/boy?? that is like the size of a mountain in the background of the boys rescueing the kid from the ice?

Ohhh.. Terry one of the examples SR540Beaver had was the colors of brown on brown.. Yuck!! Please don't do anything like that!! Remember some us old foggies have problems locating the computer, let alone see the characters!!! Otherwise, now that I have seen a few, I know I have seen those in alot of places!

I frequent other forums.. Some spiffy, some not so spiffy.. I just don't know what is running them.. Any examples you know of a a vbulletin board?? The spiffy Barnes & Nobel Board I am being spoiled by says "Powered by Lithium", but since that's a type of battery, I don't know what that means...
-
Seriously Terry, If what you see is all we could come up with on a wish list, then this site has done us fine.. Half of this post is playing with the newly discovered format link anyway! Hmm.. tried the format link for first time at home (other time it was at work).. It shows the "http://www.scouter.com/htmleditor/editor_popup.html" with a broken icon and I can't hit it to run it.. Toy doesn't work from home Anyway, something new to play with may be exciting! (This message has been edited by moosetracker)

If it's IE then look at the top for the yellow bar.. It wants you to install some microsoft application before it can work..
-
Yeah I had a gray box with an "x" when I first went in. Noticed the yellow bar at top telling me I had to accept some application.. It was a MS application, and the virus come from the advertiser sidebars, not from Scouter Terry. So I accepted. Also I have been so spoiled by the other site that takes me to the first unread post on the other forum.. Here I know to click the last page #.. but then I kind of sit at the top post in wait about 10-15 seconds waiting for it to automatically drop me to the last unread post, until I wake up.. Spoiled that is what I became.. I know, I know this is Scouting no fluff and pampering here.. Shoulder to the Grindstone and do it manually... Yeah.. Yeah..
-
Awww.. Shucks.. Forgot to play with my new toy! How did you get different sizes? Are there only 3 Normal, Heading1, Heading 2.. Super cool!
-
Your right Scouter Terry may be happy as is.. Wish lists are always fun anyway.. OGE.. Didn't see that at all!!! Nice to know.. I was always looking down for the options, and only saw the "Preview the message", "Wish to be notified via email", "Submit your message" and "Clear fields".. Never noticed a link to the left side under the title "Your Message" that said "Format this Post".. Super cool.. Ohh new toy.. ScoutNut - on coming back to the forum, I am always remembered and permenantly logged in.. But when I post a new message (or edit a message).. I always am prompted to re-enter my Username & Password.. (although I am logged in.).. We asked about this some time ago.. Had to do with security, but sorry, this isn't the NASA think tank or anything.. Maybe my son might sneak onto my laptop and post under my username to avoid using his own ridiculously way to long own user name... But oh well.. I will live..
-
ohhh.. spellcheck.. that's a good one!

Don't know why it irritated anyone, you seem sincere, and don't seem to be trying to sell us anything.. (Maybe Terry if you don't understand most scouting work is voluntary).. Improvements? Well I have it set up to work, but I had to sort the forum by last post descending, so I could tell quickly what may have been added since my last visit.. without that if you come here you first sort it ascending then decending.. Anyway, would be nice to have some of our preferences of how we like the forum to appear to be in a profile setup. I have gotten use to putting in name & password everythime, even though I have already logged in.. But most forums don't do that.. And it isn't like this a top secretrive forum that needs overkill on it's security protection.. Now I have been spending time over on the Barnes & Noble website.. (a long non-scout story there).. But anyway.. This would probably be undoable.. But.. I love how I come back to the forum and not only do they sort it by last post (as I like) but they state how many post I have not read.. And even takes me right to the point of the unread posts when I click on the thread! Even if it was on the tenth page of the forum posts! Wow.. I got spoiled!

Northern NH is neighboring Maine.. I thought our yard was bad as compared to the cities in NH.. But, when I went to our BS camp last spring, that had my yard beat!.. The clothing thing sounds good.. I will look up the Wally World product also.. I might bring the DEET stuff also, but I think some of the participants had bug spray with DEET, and the bugs didn't care.. I know we had a small container of something that seemed real good years back..Small bottle but you didn't have to slather it on, it was more like dabbing on neck & wrists and ankles.. Thing is you smelled like someone pissed all over you.. Not only did it keep the bugs at bay, people ran from you, and you were trying to run away from yourself, you smelled so bad! Might still have that buried deep in the closet. I know I see it once in a while.. You just ask yourself "Are you that desperate??" To-date the answer has been "No".. -

Alas once date & time is set and in the Council Calendar, I don't change as it is the #1 thing our participants will complain about.. Calendar for the next year was set before the past years May training took place, so stuck with that this year.. The other training is a "special" woodbadge course I have been asked to help staff.. Our normal WB is in the Fall. Dates set in stone. Only one WB per year.. This woodbadge is a once in a blue moon offering (as our council can not support 2 WB courses per year).. But it is to help the LDS Adult Leaders, Jewish as the normal one falls on a major Jewish holiday, and other various people who just are always booked with something during the Fall dates.. I was excited I was asked to be a Troop Guide as I didn't think I would be asked again.. I figured Scribe was going to be the only thing I would be deemed a "good fit" for.. But, then I recalled the month it is happening in.. 3 Fri/Sat sessions.. All in May.. I have no control over that date.. The only thing I can hope for is that only the first weekend which is at our camp, the other 2 weekends are at a camp in a more rural area.. I have never been to that camp.. They will have the little buggers, but it might be like my backyard garden again.. Imagine doing the "Listening to Learn" outside.. And asking "What do you think might be distracting you from listening to the speaker???".. (I will give you a million guesses and they are all flying around your face, nipping at your nose, and dive bombing into your ears..) -
What have you found that combats them? Recommended pest controls? personal or area spray? Environmentally safe would be good, but if none, I will drop the LNT in a fight to the death with them. I used the Black Fly spray with skin-so-soft in it "from Avon" it has always worked in my back yard during spring gardening. But when I went to our BS camp in May, it was ALOT more buggy, and didn't help much.. I know our participants had other bug sprays, but it seemed they were "bugged" also.. We mostly took our training indoors whenever possible, to move away from these pests.. (it was also raining on & off, but I think the bugs were more the issue).. Going back to the BS camp for training again in May, but I believe I might be up there about 3 weekends this May, instead of just one.. I really don't want to deal with the welts these buggers leave for the whole month.. Besides my using it, I would like to make recommendations to our participants so they can concentrate on the training rather then the bugs..

pchadbo says: And Here is the really Ironic Part, I am that Zany outgoing silly person who would be awesome helping plan and executing the program but am NOT a great organizer. I feel that CM would be a more "natural" fit for me but there is no one for the CC position... Knowing pchadbo.. I agree with this statement.. He came to one of my training courses and right away I knew I wanted to collar him for my trainers.. Didn't know if he knew anything, so I knew I might have to wait a few years for him to season.. But he just has a personality that lights up like a christmas tree.. But.. if the CM can not be depended on to do the CC job, if you switched.. Then you are more likely to be a one man show, because if the committee is unwilling to do the committee portion of the job, and you don't have any good ACM's to help, then to get the program to run, then all the underdressing work the committee should be doing but isn't will fall on the CM shoulders.. If a pack is being run by one person then it is unusual that the CC is the one man show, it normally that the CM is the one man show.

Exactly.. it could be as simple as belief in nature, the universe, the world, the magnitude of all that is around us, equates to God. if you do not believe in a god.. Or it could mean a belief in a god or gods if you do have a belief in him/them..
-
True it is my interpretation of Skeptics meaning.. But the way I take it If you believe in objects as superior to self, then unless you believe that these objects can take on a life with a conscious, then it is a God, but not a god.. The Greek gods Zeus, Poseidon, Athena etc are gods.. Because they are a being with a conscious that can rule over you. So are Buddah, Yahweh and our christian God.. I do always say "something greater then self" and then state "self" is mankind.. Skeptic wrote it as "ALL religious ideas are acceptable, as long as they admit something greater than OURselves" maybe hearing other people say OURselves is where I got the concept of it meaning all humans -or- mankind.. Here are some other passages I pulled by surfing... A belief in the spiritual aspect of human beings and a belief in a spiritual power greater than ourselves is fundamental to Membership of the Scout Movement. Every Boy Scout and adult leader must attest to that belief on an application in order to join. It can be part of subscribing to a structured religion such as Christianity, Judaism, Islam or Hinduism or a more amorphous faith in some presence greater than ourselves, Farmer explained. It can be part of subscribing to a structured religionor a more amorphous faith in some presence greater than ourselves. I don't know, you all can still see "self" as being just yourself.. I can't help but pull out of these passages that it does not mean I can make my husband my God, simply because I promised to love, honor, and... (well I didn't say obey, I forget what I said.. Hmmm.. now that means I can't do what I promised.. OH WELL.. Poor Hubby..)
-
KC9DDI Moose - I'm generally agreeing with what you're saying, but... I'm a Christian and I still have no idea what you mean regarding the "God vs god" issue. Actually I was not the one to explain this on this thread originally.. It was skeptic.. I knew of it simply in that BSA accepts you have a faith if you can believe in anything Greater then self, he defined it very well on this thread and defined the difference of God vs god.. I understood it quickly, Merlyn & you had a hard time with the concept. Here are some of the back passages on it.. Skeptic - Please do not forget that in the Scouting context, none of this is connected, except as personal beliefs of a particular scouter. ALL religious ideas are acceptable, as long as they admit something greater than ourselves; and that direction is determined at the family and personal levels. So, the Bible is only one of the many possible sacred texts that may or may not apply to this discussion. I truly do not get how so many continue to not fully understand this very important aspect of Scouting. Yes, a unit sponsored by a specific church or other religious institution may have special requirements for their members; but the members can still choose to accept or not. They may decide to go elsewhere if they feel uncomfortable with their unit; but the idea of God, in the broad, more ephemeral definition, is a personal decision, period. And, if one is not able to admit some form of personal belief beyond self, then he should look outside of the Scouting program. It is a choice Skeptic - Merlyn; You ARE NOT a Scouter, so whatever you do or do not believe makes no difference in this context. You have a complete right to your "non-belief". It just has no place within the Scouting program. Your problem, and many others', is that somehow God, and god have become confused. A God is a specific entity in which someone believes, something greater than self, normally a spiritual idea with certain higher power perhaps, or not; while gods are generic. A god or gods is a belief in a physical or spiritual being (either we are made in the image of or not) that you believe has supreme power over you, your world, your universe.. A God is something greater then yourself, but is not a physical being.. It is the belief that there is something greater then ourselves .. Something we have no control over.. (some on this thread think self means personal self, while I cling to self as in mankind (but seem to be the only one)..) Any way God does not have to be a physical or spiritual being, it does not even need to have conscious thought.. Like those who believe in rocks and trees and the wind or the sun.. Alot of us interchange the word God & god because being Christian our God is called God not Zeus or Buddah(and we even capitalize it, rather then smaller case it.).. So your confusion is probably because you are a Christian.. I don't know why Merlyn is confused though..(This message has been edited by moosetracker)
