qwaze - What of your 5 tickets depended on Scouting U... I don't see it. Also if yours is at month 17 you must have had a vision all these steps fell under.. Something with Venturing. I would have said well trained Ventures but not sure how ticket #4 fell into that vision. I don't remember all of mine.. Mine was before the day of the vision tieing all of your tickets together as a means to a larger goal. They were 5 seprate projects. Mine also will seem like smaller projects then most of yours, but as they say, it depended on the persons role in scouting and what they were capable of. I was only on committee and very shy.. 1) Organized a JLT in our troop. (Not run it, just organize all the equipment for it, and help the SM & ASM understand the syllabus.) 2) I organized a Round Robin to help the scouts understand diversity.. They didn't explain diversity very well we just got that diversity was physical handicaps, like blindness, or mental retardation.. Well, we didn't have any of that in the troop.. In later Woodbadge courses they defined it as simply including people of different personalities, interests, age groups, race, religion etc. 3) Real off the wall, nothing to do with Scouts was I volunteered to help at the community playhouse as an usher for six shows... WHAT???? (Yeah I know).. Well it was a personal challenge because I was very shy, and I suffer from crowd phobia.. I wanted to volunteer to help with a district training, but they change from allowing you to try something you were not a volunteer for, since I was not already a district volunteer, I could not do that.. They wouldn't accept helping at a district training, but accepted being an user at the community theater. Can't remember the last two.. But I think they had to do with organizing something behind the scenes for someone else to pick up and be the on-stage presence with. If I had to, most of mine except the usher thing, would have been a vision to have our troop organized and prepared for troop events.

Air Conditioned Eagle Encampment
moosetracker replied to Scouter.'s topic in Open Discussion - Program
Is this an actual camp or a proposed camp for your area.. If it's an actual camp is there a website on it.. Don't worry, it is not to send my little tike to this place.. My little tike is way too big.. I just want to see if this is a true camp or a joke.. How many in your area are for it? How many are angry about it? -

Yeah, MIB does a lot.. The whole family has now gotten the name of the clan.. His father and he is into a whole lot more then I, but we are just known because the 4 of us (include MIB fiance, do show up to alot of things in-force).. I am talking to MIB about taking on the full District Training Chair position if he wishes, I was going to take one more year at it, then hand it over. Had he gotten SM of the troop my chosen replacement would have had to be someone else as the SM position would have taken up all his time.. I know he would like to get back into working at a BS troop level with the boys again. But he is always interested in the fix-me-ups, rather then the strong healthy troops.. He would be welcomed as an ASM in many healthy troops, but he doesn't see the challenge there.. I guess I am hoping if he has his main position in District as heading one of the larger program positions, he can be happy going to one of these healthy troops and just plain having fun, there on events, although there will be no big job there for him to do as the good troops normally have healthy adult leadership already. Perhaps at sometime he will hear of an area that is absent of a troop and could use one. It may be easier for him to someday start up a troop.. I do not know if that would require more of a name for himself in the district (since he has no kids).. Or if he would need to be older.. For the adults in the area to trust the guy without kids who wishes to start a troop. Anyway, a startup troop may be easier then a fix-me-upper with alot of dysfunctional adults. -

I believe training went well also.. Seems like the new SM at least now has had his eyes open that his troop isn't a little dysfunctional but that it is ALOT dysfunctional. The course is just a starting point. But lets hope it will spur him to look for other ways to get educated. Like roundtables, and Scouting U's etc.. Also if he is of the mind to change, perhaps a UC will find an open mind if he comes in and makes suggestions. MIB will find something else to champion, I'm sure.. As you said, when the troop looked like all except the CC was in support of him (or at least resigned to him being the only canidate), it had possibilities.. When the CC even seemed converted, it was hopeful. But when overnight, it changed to only having a few supporters, it was not so promising. -
Yes, welcome, glad you got here. Never knew accept for the last few post, we had a problem.. I guess because noone could register to tell us, before now.. It has been surprisingly quiet of those quick run through people.. Come here for one problem, get the answer they want, or argue because the answer we give is not what they want to here.. Or set us off in a debate of differing opinions.. But after the one post, off they go again never to be heard of. Well hope to see you around the boards for a long while.

Yeah, our DE told MIB to go be the ASM anyway, help out anyway he can. It's not about him. "It's all for the boys" Rah.. Rah.. MIB told him although he would like to help, the ASM is no place he can do that. The troop needs a good SM barring that, a Unit Commissioner.. He didn't get into the firing of the CC or COR.. That would not be the DE's position to do so.. He already knows the CC is running things into the ground, and has made comment it is the main problem of the group. Husband said he would try to squeeze MIB into the possition (anything to save his unit).. I said he wouldn't.. I lost the bet.. Today we has Specifics training.. The guy who took SM is coming to the course, MIB will be his trainer.. Or parently advice was to be nice and friendly, but blow him away with his knowledge.. Well the guy (and the rest of the participants) should be in for a wonderful training! -

If the SM takes a firm stance with the committee & CC as to what is program and what is support it would be a little hard to keep them happy.. But, it is hard to argue with something like "Thank-you so much for the suggestion. I will take it up with the boys at the next PLC meeting and see if they want to implement it or not.." or the boys held a PLC last night and decided that they wanted to loose the bells while playing games, and this year they would like to go on events A, B and C..".. Their arguement would not be with the SM, except for the fact he is allowing the boys to lead.. -

MIB - knows my opinion on this.. Same as alot of yours.. Run (don't walk..) away.. Somethings we have heard about this troop. 1) CC is running the program, not the exiting SM. Fear of MIB is that he knows what he is doing, and will not let her run the troop.. She told him at first someone else was up for the position. Then found out the guy didn't even know he was chosen by her and didn't want the position, told MIB that.. Later CC was fine with MIB being SM.. Then he walks in to this meeting with the other guy seeking the position. Also the person who is soon-to-be SM, told MIB the CC is like that.. Someone else really wanted Finance position, they were bypass and his wife was voluntold to do the Finance position. His wife didn't want it, the other lady did.. Everyone else had no love of the CC for her high-handed ways either. But no one there knows enough about the program, to define her boundries. MIB figured as SM he would know where her boundries started and stopped. As ASM he will not be able to do so. 2) They are running a 13yo Eagle Mill Factory.. Many scouts after one year in the troop are at life rank.. They hold merit badge sessions during the scout meetings. Something MIB could have changed as SM, not as ASM. 3) The scouts rarely go camping. On occasion they might get to a camporee.. They have never had a PLC meeting per the only older scout in the troop, who somehow did advancement right (maybe an older scoutmaster's influence.) He is almost 18.. After him all the boys are only about one year or crossed over last week. The boys rarely do scout skills. Maybe once a month and it's only packing. 4) Games are altered so no boy touches another boy. The run around with bells so that rather then hitting the boy for "Tag your it" They ring the bell.. Meeting consists of just talking or a non-skill game (with no touchie rules), or a merit badge class.. To be fair the person who has now decided to take SM, may want to make changes, but since he doesn't know how they figure MIB can be ASM and make the changes for them (as long as the changes are approved by SM & CC).. Yeah if he got in there he would have needed to make alot of changes. MIB has the skills & knowledge as far as I'm concerned. But to be in an ASM position, and be charged with changing the troop, while only doing changes approved by a group of people who don't know the first thing about what a BSA program is.. Well as far as I am concerned, it would be nothing but frustrating.. Because he won't be able to make the changes he needs to.. And will go there each week to come home to scream about what they are attempting to do.. To me the CC is trying to move people around like pawns on a chess board in order to keep full control of the situation (hopefully she can get her 13 yo eagle and move out soon).. -
New Training Pocket Certificates
moosetracker replied to moosetracker's topic in Wood Badge and adult leader training
Another reason why the SE signature is worthless, many times it's a forgery.. I know at Scouting U they had a computer generated signature, some said they already had it and were using it for their training cards, other training chairs were asking for it. I did not even try, I was too much of a newbie.. So the SE signature gets forged or stamped by a computer.. I could have dealt with the DE having his signature, he would have been easier to get ahold of. So now lets see the new cards!!! Whose got them??? Anyone? Anyone? -
New Training Pocket Certificates
moosetracker posted a topic in Wood Badge and adult leader training
Has anyone seen them yet? I read in probably the Fall season training Times that new certificates would be availiable by January 1st.. The major change was removing the Scout Executive Signature. Don't know about the rest of you, but I was thrilled with that.. Trying to get his signature, was a nightmare (not in this week, gave them to him he can't find them etc..) Not to mention the fact that he can't sign for the walk-ins we get for training. Well our Scout store still has the old ones.. The on-line still only pictures the old ones.. Can I black marker out the signature line, and say it is a defunct policy??? -
12 years, that only gets your 2 year old to 14... Add 2 to 4 years onto that timeline..

Sorry you had difficulty getting to join the forum ! I assure you it wasn't me that wouldn't let you join.. I am one who pretty much lets anyone join. Wow you and your son are just at the beginning of the path ! How I envy you.. I hope you both enjoy your years in scouting, and your years of having a common interest through scouting.

12 years !!! Testing??? Oh, crud !! I was so hopeful this year was our year when our DE said it is done, and being tested in such & such council! -
If they are a member of the District Training team, and a Pack trainer.. Then after a few rounds of doing the training with other district Trainers in a group event, I would most likely give my nod of approval for the Pack trainer to do a solo district level training at their own unit. But, while doing it, I would consider that they are wearing the District Trainer hat, and not the Pack trainer hat.. Basements original list of Pack trainer duties also mentions Conducting orientation of new families and pack leaders.. I consider it "training", just not at a district level, for a pack trainers to sit with new parents and give them the background on how the unit operates, what is expected of them, how to help their son acclimate into the den/Pack.. Or to sit with someone looking at taking on a position in the troop, but has not been around long enough to know what that would entail to sit with the pack trainer to get an overview of the position and the responsibilities he would be taking on. And then I know I am being lazy, my CS manuals are in the basement, and I only haul them out for displaying at training.. I dont feel like rummaging now.. But, there is some sort of discussions in one of the manuals.. Probably Scout Leaders.. That give suggestions for Pack Trainers to lead discussion groups on topics at a committee meeting (time permitted, ours always run overtime, without adding filler).. They are required to take EDGE.. Even CMs, Den Leaders, Sms are not required to do so. This is the only position that requires this training.. There is a reason for it and they should be expected to do more than letting others know of training courses, showing videos.. I guess for me supplemental training exercises are great and should be encouraged. Hopefully the Pack chose wisely the person for this position, so they do a good job of it, knows the Pack structure, and doesnt pass bad info about pack structure or bore their victims to death with frivolous drivel. I just think EDGE training and the title of Pack Trainer, give them a license to do any training they so choose.. District / council.. Im a pack trainer, I just took EDGE.. So this weekend I will personally conduct the official Council level EDGE training for my Pack Leaders (Or district level BALOO training) But, sure if a district training is also offered on-line, or through video, and they set up something where the on-line or video is done, and then the Pack trainer facilitates a discussion afterward, or with YPT if done through video, there is a test that must be taken to complete the training. I dont see anything wrong with that.. I certainly dont want to clip the Pack Trainers wings.. Just make sure they arent over extending their boundries..

News on National/Council software development
moosetracker replied to moosetracker's topic in Council Relations
Excellent Basement.. If you run a strong enough program that people WANT to belong, and add some expectation that training is expected. Then I am confident training will take place.. I know you Basement run and excellent program.. I am pleased you pushed training as something expected even though I know you think your district/council staff are a bunch of clowns.. (I am sure that includes people on your training staff..).. Yet still you were able to impart a sense of the importance of training with the Bozos, to your adult leaders. Tokala - we will see if once the software is up. National will re-ignite the desire for manditory training.. A newsletter or so back, it seemed that flame was dieing.. Sort of a "we might not make it manditory at National level, but your councils should think about making it manditory..".. If it is left to the council, I don't think our council will push for it. They fear to much the loss of adult Leadership. When I took the position I planned to keep it for 3 years, and go through the manditory implementation helping my district. Well I just completed 2 full years in the position, and I don't think it will even start before I hit year number 3.. Not sure if it every will. But if I get to play with the new software a bit this year, that will be exciting. -
BP.. You are most likely 100% correct.. My council/District, is like Barry's Venturing for the most part faulters and fails within 5 years.. I am hopeful though. Our district has one crew going strong out of a high school (not yet passed it 5 year mark).. It has though a exceptional high school teacher running it who "gets it".. He will be running our district Venture specific training this spring, so I hope he can get others to "get it".. Problem is how to impart the wisdom onto the adult leaders, so that they don't screw it up.. Sometimes even if given great training, they just aren't the right personality for the job. It takes a very special Adult who can run Venturing the way it needs to be run.. They seem to be rare in this neck of the woods..

News on National/Council software development
moosetracker replied to moosetracker's topic in Council Relations
True.. I hope there is more then just dashboards. Dashboards summarize, and it may not be a summary of what you feel is important, but rather what someone else feels is important. Probably since they are assuming most will be non-technical the best I can hope for is some user friendly report writers. But maybe I can get some ability to pull data into excel, and then organize the data to my needs that way.. One can only hope. A few comments in the last few months sounds like they may not allow us to view names & contact info.. Somewhat understand, but somewhat don't.. Like, don't ask me to figure out who needs training, and make a personal connection with them to invite them to training, but refuse to give me the names and contact info of scouters who need to be trained. Husband had this hit him bad, when council demanded that districts use the Councils list of meritbadge counsilors rather then their own, (although the software bugs makes the accuracy of their list totally inaccurate, even if the data entry people are trying to do a good job.).. So hubby asks to have their MBC list so he can see how messed up it is.. They could not release that info... So how am I to use your list of MBC's if I can not have that list to work off of... "Ohhhhhhhhhh"... "Don't know....".. "But use it anyway...".. -
OK.. Anyone with more news please add to this. Years & years us at the district council level have heard about new software development to replace the outdated, crappy, 3 systems that don't talk to each other, buggy...(need I go on).. system that is in place.. For years we heard This year (early in year), Next year (late in year).. So when my DE said "This year".. My response was "Yeah, Right".. He said "No, No.. it is complete and being tested out in (some council).." News is that it will be all inclusive, Our DE can give us at need to know District levels access to areas where we can extract the info we need to monitor the needs of the district, with dashboards and what not.. I had always heard Training would be the first module implemented being rushed to handle manditory training goals.. Now I hear that this should be a complete system, so Advancement & Membership & what not will get their needs met also.. I normally hear this dirt from this forum, long before I hear it from my council.. You guys sleeping on the job or what... My DE was gloating because he was "in-the-know" and I was not..

Sorry, like I said, I don't have news about that sort of stuff here. So, I guess I just saw the comment of I know a number of school districts facing or that have faced political and legal challenges over promoting "diversity", especially as that often comes with veiled or unveiled intent to exclude or reject religious viewpoints which are for some reason not diverse. along with qwazse statement conservatives send their kids to private schools, and demand vouchers to cover the expense of having to do so because of "corrupting" mandates. "due to corrupting mandates" seems to indicate they disagree with the gay teacher being hired, pull their kids on this issue, and demand a school system that does not have a voucher system in place, pay for them to boycott the school based on their "equal rights" hiring practices.. Sort of like the radio broadcaster who advocated that you should demand that your child not be treated by a health care provider who wears a "rainbow pin".. As they will not be good role models for your children. Or the poster on this forum who did state she put her children in private school due to fear of homosexual teachers.. Seems different then your latest statement of There are several school voucher programs in place in major U.S. cities (Milwaukee and Cleveland come to mind), where parents may choose to send their children to religious schools and the public tax dollars will provide a voucher to pay for it. That money does come out of the funds for public schools, though generally it is set at an amount less than the per-pupil cost of educating a public school student. Those programs have passed constitutional muster with the Supreme Court. If there is a program in place, then there is a program in place regardless of WHY you choose to move your kid to a different school.. You have a right to use it.. I think that is what was being discussed in NH 10-15 years back.. I have no problem with that. Don't know about "diversity days".. Never heard of it.. but yes, if they have that, then everyone should get to be represented.. Just put conflicting viewpoints on opposite sides of the gym.. Surprised it caused such a ruckus parents pulled their kids out of the school system though, but I guess if you feel you are not being treated fairly you could get that upset about one single event. Bullying is just something schools have a hard time really getting a handle on. The Gay kids get abused just as much as the religious ones, short ones, fat ones, weak ones.. The kids learn where they can bully that is under the radar of the school system.(This message has been edited by moosetracker)

Beavah writes especially as that often comes with veiled or unveiled intent to exclude or reject religious viewpoints which are for some reason not diverse. Hmmm.. has anyone denied your child the ability to go to the public school?.. Provided you have the teaching credentials are you denied the job based totally on your religious preference? I don't think of it as discrimination if what you are being denied is the right to dictate to the public community that everyone do things your way.. Especially when your way demands that other people be denied their rights to a job, or to go to attend a public school.. If that were the case then we must allow everyone the right to demand that everything is run according to their way.. And what is the school to do to accomidate the demands of the Atheist and the demands of the religious?? Put every child in a seprate room with a personal teacher who does everything according to the childs family values? Nope.. Maybe some people choose to pull their kids and put them in private for their religious beliefs, but never heard of them demanding the public school pay for it. I do know of one case that the parents pulled a child and demanded the school pay, but that was over sever bullying that the school did not do enough to prevent.. I know there has been talk of some people wanting credit to put their kid where ever they want or home school, but that was about 10 15 years back, and they haven't gotten that passed.. Don't know if it is still being argued for somewhere. Maybe it is not news worthy enough to hit the news, but have yet to hear of someone arguing that the public schools pick up the tab of the private school, based on the fact the parents wish to discriminate against certain people is not being respected and enforced by the school system.

That is true OakTree, why does sports not get crushed in this political upheavel.. Is it just that the sports teams are not really under a big enough umbrella. More locally run and managed? Is it because people see it as just sports, not really there to strengthen the childs moral compass? Is it because the never tied God into it, and don't try delve into sex education? So the worse that can happen is do we allow the gay football player on the team or don't we?? And it's sort of a question of was he good enough to make the cut and was discriminated against or not? Schools get into teaching diversity acceptance, they don't get crushed for it.. Both with hiring Teachers and children. Is that because it is simply a public establishment, so conservatives ignore the fact they treat the unwashed with equal respect, because they figure they were forced to do so by government mandates?
