Future BSA President Intent to Eliminate the Ban on Gays
moosetracker replied to BSA24's topic in Issues & Politics
Was Chuck Norris ever in a Western?.. That would be interesting to watch. He was more "B" in Kung-fo movies that I recall, and all I remember was more 70's 80's so in color not black & white.. (I think Jackie Chan was the best though.) I was thinking of his charactors, I don't remember anything where he played a bad guy, or fruit cake. He was always the "good guy", helping people who were unfairly treated by either the system or the rich & powerful.. And for the time period that it played on TV show "Walker Texas Ranger" was a decent TV show. By todays standards, it may not rate so well, but for then it was decent.(This message has been edited by moosetracker) -
Future BSA President Intent to Eliminate the Ban on Gays

Well, if it comes from Chuck Norris, it must be true.. Norris, is a great actor, love his movies. But, honestly the guy shouldn't communicate without a script.. Yeah, Yeah, I know free speech and all that.. But, he opens his mouth and spews such nonsense, and all the respect you have for him that is built off of his TV & movie characters, goes down the drain. -
woodbadge expectations
moosetracker replied to rainman29's topic in Wood Badge and adult leader training
Be forewarned, different people have different feelings about Woodbadge. My son took WB at 18/19 himself. It always is run during the two weekends where the first weekend he was 18, the second he was 19. The year before he wanted to take it but couldn't as it started when he was 17.. The Course Director was a little hesitant with him taking it so young, others on this forum may voice the same thing.. The worry is that your senior year of HS or Freshmen year of College (really all years of College), may have you needing to place your time elsewhere then the tickets.. Or if you are leaving HS to start looking for work, or starting your career, your concentration will be there.. Or you may find you need to move away from your troop, and not find a new troop or get a different type of position in a new troop, or the new troops needs may no longer fit your tickets.. Anyway, long story short at this time of your life your life may take different unexpected turns. Many at your age may not finish the tickets. That being said.. Know this, if you move but stay in scouts, you can work with your WB Ticket councilor to change your tickets. So if at your finish two of the five tickets and need to change troops which upsets your ticket work, you can keep the two tickets as done, look at the others as which ones will and will not work in the new troop.. Keep those out of the three left that will work, and change those out of the three left to work with your new troop or new position in the troop. Also my son went into it with a different attitude. It would be nice for him to complete WB course with the tickets. But, the skills taught were great to put to work for him in his college courses. He did finish his WB tickets and the course, but barely, sliding under the wire with a week to spare. You may learn things you already know, or new things. But get to know your patrol, most of them being older will have the fun of getting into the mindset of being a kid, you can help them with that mindset haveing just recently left it. They can help you with taking the lessons learned and apply them to the way an adult would take that knowledge and apply it.. Because you may still have some of the looking at things through the lens of a youth in the program.. You and your patrol mates can learn alot if you work off of each others strengths. WB (if put on by a staff dedicated to doing it right), can be both alot of fun as well as getting a good education. Not in scoutcraft (which I am sure you can start fires and tie knots). But, in how to energize your troop both the adults and the scouts to wanting to work together as a well oiled team to have a great unit that is youth led with the adults supporting the youth in what they want to acheive, while stepping out of their way and letting them take the lead. -
Green Mountain Council (VT) inclusive
moosetracker replied to RememberSchiff's topic in Issues & Politics
They are more carefully worded, so they try to look more inclusive without having National focus it's radar beams on them.. It really is just restating the Don't ask, Don't tell policy.. Still it is a voice of another council stating they would prefer local option, that everyone does not prefer the National policy. That the council will try and be as blind and unnoticing as possible.. Not sure what would happen if someone came in with a complaint about another Scout or Scouter.. They may be just going through life hoping they will never be put into that type of a bind. -

Future BSA President Intent to Eliminate the Ban on Gays
moosetracker replied to BSA24's topic in Issues & Politics
So, we have a president who is honest and transparent about his background, he never hid that fact and it was known even during his first run for office. Let's see Romney match that transparency with his background. -

Nah.. There is hope for you if your young enough, otherwise it is just waiting for the future generation to out live us. Then their children will even be better.. You know true evolution. Even with our attitude and treatment of blacks by whites (as well as whites by blacks), we may be better then in the 1950's. But, we aren't there yet.. We still have a long way to go. -
Future BSA President Intent to Eliminate the Ban on Gays
moosetracker replied to BSA24's topic in Issues & Politics
That's what I was wondering Shortridge. There is now alot of new on this policy, but this is not part of our mission statement. In fact it is hard to find the written policy about homosexuals any where. BSA's mission is not to teach young people anything about sexuality at all, either heterosexual or homosexual. But, then SP's comment was a little bit confusing. Comparing the future President of BSA opinion to be against the main mission of scouting.. But then in the next line stating he is not surprised that top leaders in BSA would have differing opinions.. Sounds like he just debated himself out of his own arguement. -

SP.. Yeah us! One on the National Executive Board and growing!! We're number 1! We're number 1! (quite literally that is).. If he reaches the President postion safely without being shot at.. Maybe some others on the Board will be courages enough to speak up. If not at least liberals may be more welcomed to replace any vacated seats.. -
A spokesperson for Romney recently stated he still held the same view.. Another unusual that he has not flip on this issue.. But, then maybe during the years he flipped, then flopped and so is back to the statement he made in 1994..

Well the campaign spending is not the same as the person in question spending. This was probably some lowly person on the campaign trail using their food allowance at Chick-fil-a. I don't see either Obama nor Romney actually eating there. But, I doubt either supported the silly boycott or Chick-fil-a appreciation day either.. Presidential opinion may be something news worthy. It may be something people will discuss. But not everyone will do what the President believes in. In fact Republicans will do the exact opposite of what Obama wants. So think about it. BSA is already loosing liberals and is becoming pretty much an organization for conservatives. In otherwords will attract more Republicans then Democrates.. Put up a big PR sob story about BSA being misunderstood and picked on by the mean old boogie man Obama.. Call a "BSA appreciation day" during recruitment day, and maybe you too can have your own Chick-fil-a success story. I would imagine some Liberal minded corporations may think twice about their money contributions to BSA.. But, you may find new support among the conservatives who will want to oppose the President.. But, go at it cchoat, you almost have your Sob story perfected.
-
Well I doubt either of them had an Opinion on Chick-fil-a.. I just don't see the Presidential caravan pulling up to a Chick-fil-a drive through.. Nor do I see filthy-rich Romney even knowing about fast-food restraunts.. Probably would get the same eeeww factor as the 7/11 store bought cookies. Seems to me like a first for Romney & Obama to agree on anything since Romney got into the presidential race?
-
Who said anything about force?.. All they voiced was opinion. Perhaps more people may take note of their opinions over that of you or me. But, all it is is an opinion.. Did you hear anything about either of them taking action against BSA to force them to close their doors if they did not change their ways? In fact Obama said it is a fine institution, but...
-
cchoat - you mean that you "interpreted" his actions the way you want to interpret them.. I am taking from your words your love of our president, which sort of colors your perceptions. It is not like Obama is the first president ever to miss a BSA Jamboree.. The last 2 presidents only were in office for 2 terms, but only made the 4 year Jamboree once while in office.. Which means they made it one term and missed it another term. Perhaps Obama will go to the Jamboree during his second term in office.. (snicker, snicker) I knew you would like that one.. http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2010/07/27/obama-missing-historic-boy-scout-jamboree-fundraisers-view-taping/ (This message has been edited by moosetracker)

I posted this in the large thread last night, for the specific purpose of keeping it alive. But, I knew someone would create a new thread. Brewmeister - this policy has nothing to do with the scout law.. But, if you change the law to that you would have inequality for those who still are trustworthy or loyal etc.. How about a nice short Scout law... "We Are!" But, seriously, you can say the scout law just fine as a homosexual or an atheist or as a girl.. The oath is the one that gets tricky only for the atheist.

It was also cited in some article that Minute Man also didn't follow it. I was surprised to hear that, as I had heard earlier they tried to and National smacked them back into submission (along with Philidelphia).. I thought that name sounded familure as to it being the letter your posted RS.. You saved me from having to go back some pages to double check.
-
Johnponz - in a religious organization faith trumps rational thought. LOL on this we can agree, religion is not for rational thinkers!.. I am curious to see what dent all this publicity will do with BSA's sponsers this year. Hopefully LDS members have deep pockets to make up any of the difference, and maybe the owner of Chick-fil-a will give a contribution (or is he mormon already?)
-
Given National strong arm policy I would imagine so.. Then NSC will just have to continue doing what they have done for 10 years without a statement about it. They will probably loose some charters who will want an assurance there will be no gaybash patrol from Council or National barnstorming their meetings to haul off homosexuals.. There will be others that will be fine with a quiet reassurance.. If they change the SE or do something drastic, that truely marks an end to policy, it will have more drastic consequences of CO's dropping their units. And the council will after that mass exodous willbecome like all the other council with a slowly spiraling downward momentum of membership numbers.
-
So RS sounds like though your church does not want to be welcoming to homosexuals (maybe would prefer NSC to follow national). They can work with the local option that allows them the ability to follow national rules (plus whoever else they choose to exclude).

Beavah there is a difference between joining an organization then trying to turn it into what it is not is one thing (Yes it would be weird for someone to join BSA to make it into a Senior Citizens group and try to change the age of membership to be no one under the age of 65 should be allowed to be scouts. And bingo and shuffleboard should be the new rank requirements. Debating within a private organization to be closer to what they proclaim to be is not the same thing.. We debate change because they try to teach inclusiveness, state they respect all religions and yet we disagree that that are practicing what the preach.. Maybe you should not join a church that is Jewish and try to change it to be Catholic.. But ask the Baptist church who welcomed in new members includeing a black couple and state they are open to all races, yet when the couple wanted to marry at the church that they had become members of, they were denied the right to marry there on the grounds that they were black.. That has a internal disagreement going on.. The changes in church view over accepting black members, women and now homosexuals as church members has been a source of internal debate within churches for a long time.. Why not, churches teach loving they brother, some members don't get the "Except for those guys over there." In an earlier forum someone said the organizations first did not accept chiropractors.. I would imagine it was changed through internal disagreement of it's members as to if they were medical professional or not that got it changed. Now if someone wanted to join to debate allowing clowns into the organization that would be strange, but a debate over who is a valid Doctor or not is not.. In BSA you now have a debate over if homosexuals is the most sinful sinner around (over that of adulters or strippers) that they have to be plucked out, without the CO having a choice as to accept.. We aren't asking for BSA to change into a Senior Citizens group, we are simply asking for the fair treatment of some youth who are homosexuals, some parents who are homosexuals and some great worthwhile adult citizens (who may or may not have been scouts in their youth) who the CO would approve to be good adult leaders.. We have an internal disagreement on what is inclusive, and what is non-sectarian, and what is meant by CO's having the ability to control over their units..

Latest Re: Restricted Files from L.A. Times

It is shocking that these people were not informed to the police.. Shocking that in that period of time, pedophiles were not reported in most places, not just BSA. As for the reports easily being skirted and these guys easily finding a way back in.. If you look and any of BSA tracking reports for anything, right up to today.. Is this really a surprise? Given BSA computer systems to date, computerizing the data would have done no better then putting it on paper and into a file cabinet. -
Even in traffic or criminal.. I would imagine since traffic is without jury, then it would be small crimes that don't need jury (sorry, I don't spend time in court systems).. Anyway point is, if no jury then the decision of guilt may be skewed.. Similar to how some people will put a black person especialy if the crime was commited against a white person. Also the sentencing could be harsher, where for nldscout a similar crime by a heterosexual may get a slap on the wrist and by a gay they would get jail time. Luckily per nldscout no one has come through who by dress and actions is unquestionably gay.. Let's hope it stays that way..

NldScout statement I said what half of the people on here think and say in private. Scratching head..... Which half do you think he is refering too??
-
Let's just say you suggested that with this comment All of my Eagles have used the time during their ceremonies to thank everyone who helped them, not make political statements.
-
Well, luckily the Eagle Scouts speech is typically left for the end, after the award has been given.. So you would just have to put up with what the Eagle Scout wishes to speak about.. From the condensed version Bando stated of his speech, he did thank others, and basically worded it in a way that he stated he loved all scouting did for him, but just is sadden that some people are barred from similar circumstances.. It sounds like it was done in a very respectful way. recap of Bando's statement I used my short response at my COH to thank everyone who helped me get where I was, and took a moment to lament the fact that the BSA's membership policy limited others from having the incredible experience my family and I had in scouting
