  1. What packsaddle.. The course itself?.. That maybe because you are no longer some tenderfooted cubscout parent who just got roped into doing something you know nothing about, and have no clue how to do it.. I myself haven't don't much with CS specifics.. I felt too rusty in the subject matter. I am dusting off my skill set though, so may feel confident enough to attempt it soon.
  2. Counting twenty minutes of EDGE in place of the Patrol Method in the "Patrol Method" session of Scoutmaster Specific Training? No Kudu, you can breath as this is not in training for the youth at troop level. This is the Adult Leader EDGE training that was basically a day long training. That seems to be changing to 3 different courses.. I have no idea though what is required when. Right now, EDGE is only required for WB staffers, but they highly encouraged it for district level trainers, and of course was happy of anyone else with interest. One comes before the EDGE, as basic training.. So would you need to take that if you have already been EDGE trained before it came out?.. The other one is some Masters course, which they were trying to sell District Trainers to take, but you had to go to Philmont or something at that time, so I had no desire to spend the money. Sounds like that was Beta testing it. Now it is in full swing, so will that now be at council level?? If so is it still just highly suggested, with no one required to take it..
  3. personally for me, if anyone gets up and reads to me anything, they loose me.. Unless there is a reason. It is a poem like "little Fellow Follows me" in the den cheif training, or a short story, or a small, very small "have to read" passage. But, if I have to read it, I would pass something out so they can read along. It is just I know personally I would remember it better in this manner. Otherwise someone reading to me looses my attention, and I sit there annoyed.. I just know I have read trainers on this forum stating that the syllabus must be followed verbatim.. Like you, I read the whole thing once, the sections I am going to do a few times.. Then I figure out how I am going to put it in my own words, while covering all the syllabus wants covered and practice it a few times. With the Cub Specifics I am happy all the power point is gone.. I only have 3 projectors, and it isn't enough for all those breakouts.. So I run the course hoping no one shows up for certain sections, or only one or two so it's a small group on a laptop..
  4. I decided to repost my original post, as it just remains freaky. I'm a little behind picking up with the changes as I am not the training chair anymore, just a trainer.. But, I just read the Training times for the Fall season and discovered the changes to the cub scout specifics training (only partially there).. So then I pulled the Den Leader Training syllabus and just read the prefix, which showed lots more changes to the program.. I have mixed feelings with these changes.. I also feel having heard others opinions on IOLS the changes would be received differently by different people.. So the Train the Trainer is changing from just the EDGE course to 3 courses.!. The fundamentals of Training. Edge. and Master Trainer. So more training of trainers, don't know who is required to take any of it, except that the Edge is required of Woodbadge staff.. In a totally different path the cubs Specific Syllabus is not only approved to teach at District and Council level, but also at unit level.. So does this mean that someone with no "train the trainer" training, and maybe no care to even read the syllabus does whatever they think is sufficient and mark their Adult leader staff off as trained?.. I guess I have mixed feelings for this. I had an ambitious notion of getting these specific trainings more available by promoting units who neighbor each other to form a cooperative and put the training on between people in the two or three units. When I proposed it, I got the deer-in-the-headlights look, no one was interested.. So will no one be interested in this "do it yourself" option. Or will they be for the wrong reasons of no one can see if it's done right or wrong. The mixing of units I liked also to give units who are not putting on a good program ideas on how to improve. If they just live in their own bubble, how can they recognize they have room for improving their program? But, there are also units, who are already excellent and of those units, I see no problem if they choose to run their own program.. unfortunately they are packs already good, and they have a desire to remain with a good program. I am for smaller and simpler, but I guess I just am not for "stay in your own bubble" when doing training.. The good units will stay good, the bad units will stay bad. One thing I was happy to see, but I feel will cause those who love to state "The syllabus must be followed verbatim" was the following paragraph. This syllabus is not designed or intended to be read verbatimâ€â€with the exception of the Youth Protection presentation. Trainers should be familiar with the content and able to present it without reading. Experienced trainers can use their own words but must be sure to cover the content and meet the objectives of the session. I was never good at memorizing word, for word "verbatim" the syllabus, and never forced my staff to do what I could not do.. And no we did not stand up and "read" the syllabus to our participants. My staff and myself would pretty much train as this paragraph suggests it should be done.. So it relieves me of my guilty feelings because I didn't have a photographic memory..
  5. Is this post quirky to others?.. When I posted it wanted to open or save something.. I said open, but it was in .json which it didn't know how to open.. So I got out and cam back. Now to me the comment is sort of their, but not really, then it disappears to an empty thread.

  7. Well I am somehow back in cub scouting, and kind of acting like a Pack Trainer to a Pack that is starting over. The pack never really folded, But there isn't a single cub / parent in the pack who has been in the program more then 10 months. There are some spots that worry me, but I have high hopes for it.. Our wolves and tiger group are strong, the wolves especially they have 9 cubs and seem to keep adding a cub every week to their den. The tigers are only 4, but they may pick up more next year as the wolves did. I only had one Bear, Webs I and Webs II, and tried combining them into one group.. I think I just lost the Bear, but they are in that "ignoring you" phase where we can't write them off yet, but have not come and wont respond to email or a phone call. So I am looking at how to keep two Webs entertained, and organize two sort of reluctant parents to take on the jobs of Den leaders.. I still feel when Webelos II either bridges over, or is adopted (he is in foster care and there is a family interested in adopting) I have no clue as to how to work with one scout, and really feel it may be best to point him to the Pack in the next town over.. I kind of feel, the troop that feeds off this Pack will fold for a year or so until we work our wolves up to bridging over anyway.. Didn't feel that way, until I lost the Bear, and found out the Webs II was probably due to move out of area pretty soon. Until then I thought we had a chance of feeding them one scout a year, and who knows, maybe might had added a scout or two, after all our recruitment this Fall gave us these 3 older scouts. Now I feel that desperately hanging onto a lone scout will do him no favors.. But, while I got two, I am working hard with them now. So what to do with a den of two (three?).. If the Bear is gone, I will move the group over to the same night as the other dens, who meet in the great room at the church together.. The Bear couldn't make that night. But a big empty church for two scouts and their parents echo's of loneliness.. It really does. At least if we can move them with the others there is the energy of the other kids to feed off of, even if you are doing your own things. Perhaps we can organize a 10 minute game at the beginning or end, that could be played as a group.. Beginning is good for a time filler as people arrive, but I would have to find a parent willing to take the job on and get to the meeting early.. At the end might be good, as the Boy Scout troop comes in right after the Cub Scout group ends.. Might even get a Boy scout or two willing to come early and hosting the game, and the other BS could join in as they arrive unless we find the games to be physical and our tigers are being trampled on my our 15 - 16 year old scouts. Anyway Back to the working with the Webs group.. So, I found most games wont do as most games are for more the two players, team building.. No, teams building exercises again plan on more then two on the team.. I have landed on some books that are fun science, and bought those. It seems like a lot of the category breakdowns in the book go well with an activity pin or belt loop. Anyone else work with the "365 Science experiments" books.. Seems like most experiments are with household items and wont break the bank. Well that lead me to really pulling up and looking at the belt loops, to see what some science projects would help them earn. I had already been looking over the achievement pins and were fine with the requirements for those. But, the belt loop requirements shocked me.. Either my sons den leaders did it wrong, or they have changed in the last 15 - 18 years.. Belt loops were something you earned by sneezing.. Go bowling, get the bowling belt loop, play marbles for 5 minutes earn that belt loop, etc.. Not complaining too much, I thought even at the time my son went through it they were too easy, and became a financial hardship on our pack. I know our pack limited it to they would only pay for a belt loop once, as people wanted to re-earn the same belt loop over at each rank.. Still, it's is now something I have to look into.. I also found a nice Fall outing. About a 35 minute drive from us is a "Tree & Shrub ID walk" within a nature preserve which will talk about how to identify trees/shrubs in the winter, and how the animals depend on the forestry to survive in the winter.. Well now that got me looking at if the scouts might like to start the "Leave No Trace" award. Then, because I was looking at what we could do with the science stuff, I ended up going through the Nova and SuperNova stuff.. I saw there was a thread last month on it on this board and read that.. Well, I definitely would be that cubedweller, that Basement & Packsaddle object to, but I think our wolf Den leader has a job that is more science like, so if my Webs end up moving to the same time/night as the rest of the Pack, we may have some help there. Anyway.. I am now lost in a tangle of confusion.. 500 hundred paths to choose from, which way to go.. If we start them all, will we finish any of them?.. It just didn't seem so complex when my son was a cub scout.. Of course back then, I just let the den leader figure it out and followed the path set by the Den Leader blindly. Oh the good ol' days..
  8. very nice.. Until I have grandkids, those days are over for me.. But I had two cats sleeping on my lap last night, does that count.
  9. Actually I am not a "fan" of the ACA.. I am just open minded to it, and feel something needs to be done and this is a step in the right direction.. What I am not a fan of is a the lies and fear mongering that the radical right is saying which can be proven to be untrue if you take two seconds to check out.. There is nothing to be said about people who are either believing it or not believing it but repeating it verbatum in an attempt to try to scare others.. When someone wants to spew falsehoods, I just feel compelled to correct them, either for their benifet (If they care to know the truth) or for the benefit of their victims who they are trying to scare by spewing it in the first place.. Now as for predictions of it working, I know whose predictions I will not believe.. Those same people who spew untruths that can easily be looked up and dispelled with 2 minutes of research, because they are just in the buisness of scaring people because they know in order for this to work it needs healthy people as well as unhealthy people to sign up.. So if they can scare enough people, then perhaps they can force their own negative predictions to come true..
  10. Well, if you are going to panic over things that are not even true.. Smuckka Head is being nice.. I would call my own son or husband a smuckka head if they are not thinking rationally..
  11. Yeah, like I said, I wasn't involved in the recruitment night.. They needed a UC to get them started, so I volunteered about a month later.. No one said anything about the missing Boys Life until this years recruitment and they were pushing it again, that's when the returning Adult leaders said something about paying for it last year and never getting it. Then when I brought up the Adult leader payments, they were shocked as they didn't pay that last year.. So I don't know what happened.. But, something sure did.
  12. Yeah.. Resurecting a Pack is hard.. I am going through it now.. I get a high of "yes, this is going to work".. Then two lows of "Shoot", "Shoot", "Shoot".. Still keep introducing myself as the UC.. My job is to show up once a month and say "Hi, how are you?" and then take off again.. I am starting to get laughs as it is starting to be a running joke.. I am unfortunately the glue holding the Pack together right now.. Right now I have a den of 1 bear scout, 1 Webelos one scout and 1 Webelos 2 scout.. And working to get the parents to all take on parts of the Den Leader coming together for group participation and seperating for some rank advancement. Then last year we had our 3 member committee.. This year I have no one in the committee and I am taking on the CC position, and holding the meetings amoung the Den Leaders.. If this doesn't change by early December the Pack will not recharter.. With the increase in the registration fees I need to talk people into paying $50 if one son or $75 if 2 sons because of the $25 they need to pay $25 so they can do a job they are being pushed into taking on.. All my parents even my parents from last year have sticker shock.. In fact they don't think they paid last year.. And I am starting to figure out how that may be.. I wasn't at the recruitment night.. The DE had all pay for the scout registration and Boys Life.. No one got the Boys Life last year.. So I think the DE re-appropriated that to the Adult registration fees.
  13. I have already stated this a few times.. On this thread I know I stated it once before.. Statment #23 "You Smuckka heads are so scared of the individual mandate. Don't know why, nothing will force you to pay it, the IRS can not go after you or enforce it.. Just worry that you don't overpay and expect a rebate. They may be inclined to take from that the penelty.. But I'm not sure.." First your all crying about the individual mandate, Stop it.. Stop it.., Now your crying because it's not really a mandate.. Make up your minds what you want to cry about.. People can't buy into your fear tactics if you keep bouncing the retoric around like a ping-pong ball.. Are there things that could be tweeked and improved on.. Sure, but I will trust the suggestions of someone who cares over the suggestions of someone who wants to destroy it. It's a step in the right direction is all..
  14. Sorry, if the unemployment rate were low, then I end up siding more with the idea that those not finding work are slackers. But, when unemployment is high I no longer see those not finding work as slackers, but people hurt by the economy.. So I guess I end up being more upset if government took 25 cents from my dollar during good times to help others, when there are tons of "Help Wanted" signs hanging up everywhere.. I am much more understanding when in hard times the government takes 50 cents to help my fellow man.. "There but for the grace of God go I.." Just the kind of Christian that I am.
  15. Well give it a year or so, I'm sure they will strap on the bombs and burn down the congress.. But for now terrorist and anarchist and extortionists are correct, You can add lunatic also.. Interest in Fiscal Responsibility is fine.. Just tanking the economy while stating you are doing it for the good of the economy is not being Fiscally Responsible..
  16. dcsimmons - that's funny.. So Democrats were the union busters... Very true about unions, but some differences also.. #1 Our Government is in no way a Union.. It was made up to be a equal balance of power in seperate branches, most of whom are elected by the people (accept for the courts that are appointed by your elected officials).. Now if your in the minority of the governmental powers, it means stop having crappy ideas no one likes.. It does not mean form a union and hijack government so you minority with your crappy ideas can force rule the people. Another difference is that while on strike, they may be hurting the company but they are also hurting themselves as they don't get paid by their companies to be on strike (and yes hurting those who use the service).. The Republicans shutdown was not hurting those in Congress forcing the shutdown at all (except for their popularity in the polls, but they are in such a bubble they can't even see that.) Instead, they took others hostage and made others suffer.. And then when they saw parts of government that they did not like being shut down, they tried to reopen only what they liked in hopes of only taking hostage the parts of government they could happily not fund for years.. Thus again trying to force empirical rule.. Our founding fathers tried very hard to set up a government where someone could not force a dictatiorship.. Republicans are attempting every dirty trick in the book to ignore this and attempt ot set up one anyway.
  17. I knew that too jblake.. I might have posed it as a question, but the answer that the question was rigged to not allow the person to give any intellegent answer was obvious.. They may have thought they to get the survey to put the blame on Obama him being the only politician in Washington, yet they were surprised to find that regardless, it's the fault of a republican.
  18. Why would they even pose the question that way?? Obviously if not given the choice of Republicans who were the true culprits, then they probably went with the Republican choice.. Basically not given the choice of neither, then what are they to choose?
  19. You Smuckka heads are so scared of the individual mandate. Don't know why, nothing will force you to pay it, the IRS can not go after you or enforce it.. Just worry that you don't overpay and expect a rebate. They may be inclined to take from that the penelty.. But I'm not sure.. If all you guys wanted was to negotate and debate on FAIR ground you could have come to the table between May and Oct. when the Senate and House both had budgets and the House was asked 18 time to negotiate.. But NOOOOOO... You didn't have an unfair leverage.. The minute you shut the goverment down, and took it hostage.. THE VERY MINUTE.. then the house asked for negotiations to begin.. Now you get to go to negotiations without holding the government hostage and you are behaving as if there is no reason to negotiate.. I had to look up your 600,000 Americans died.. The Civil war??? Geesh!!! Your still crabbing because you can't keep black slaves?? What a moron.. Oh.. Wait a minute, wasn't Abe Lincoln a Republican?? Having a black president must really get your prejudicial dander up.. Other then that, yeah I wish we had waved bye, bye to the South, you haven't added anything positive to the mix that's for sure.. You could fall apart in poverty and ignorance with only a handful of wealthy people in control and taking advantage of the downtrodden, and the North could have erected a border to keep the southern immigrants from trying to hop the fence for a better life.
  20. Again, Repubs were not negotating they were taking the country hostage and making demands.. What were the Repubs willing to give up for gutting the ACA besides returning that which they had kidnapped??.. I didn't hear of any offers on the table.. Therefore, it was not negotiations, it was hostage taking and making demands.. I guess if someone kidnaps your child and demands you pay them a million bucks and not involve the police, you would consider that negotiations..
  21. We already know what your political parties belief is, it is repeated ad nauseam. Tell me why that makes you tthink you have a right to destroy the economy purposefully or at least threatening to destroy the economy in order to force demands that rather then going into normal negotiations over the budget you should have things all your own way, and then turn around and call that valid negotiation.. How many years would junior there have to work to fix you not raising the debt ceiling and causing us to default?.. Yes, I know your political tea-party messiahs said it would have been no problem, may even help the economy.. They know much more then all the economists and the bankers, Wallstreet and buisnessmen who use to be fine with your group and now are demanding you be removed from the Republican party, or they will not continue to support Republicans. Now, the republican house will have to meet with the Senate and both debate and negotiate the budget on equal footing.. Now you are forced to work within the system.. Poor baby.. If you political party were not such spoiled brats I might even feel sorry for you.
  22. It was about the 3rd or 4th ransom demand.. http://0.tqn.com/d/politicalhumor/1/0/s/6/6/Republican-Compromise.jpg
  23. Well I won't say that there was nothing to do with Kid safety. The clip I saw showed them fooling around the rock, they toppling the rock with cheers and joking, but at the end of the clip one of the guys does say something about them saving kids from getting hit with it or something.. I don't think it was the primary reason, there is just too much horseplay around the action.. But, it was a side thought at least.
  24. that's funny when you support a group that haven't been right one single time in their political retoric How's Bengazi doing? What happen to all that sure fire evidence on Obama or Clinton? How about the IRS scandel? Again definate evidance it went straight to the top. Why isn't Romney President? All your polls showed him winning by a landslide. Now we have this government shut down and threating of a debt default. America is with you? Total victory for your side?.. Really?? Meanwhile the ACA went up in popularity in the polls, Republicans tanked to their lowest in history for since polling started, And 70% of Americans thought the GOP attempt to kill the ACA by shutting down the government was the wrong way to go.. Republicans are more united then ever.. Really? I have not heard so much discussion of the Republican party seperating into two distinct parties since the tea party was formed by republicans on Capital hill and big supporters of the Republican party..
  25. Your groups problem is that they count anything said by anyone that is not total praise for ACA means they are opposed to it.. Find 1 physician that is against it, all physicians are against it.. The union had a problem with one item in the ACA, the union is totally against it.. So and So says this part could stand improvement, well So and So is totally against ACA.. It is really funny when the Republican make these claims and then the person or group who they say is against it, comes out to discount it and say the GOP is totally misrepresenting their position.. I guess I tend to believe the person or group themselves rather the political retoric from the GOP.. I worked with a group in the re-election of Obama campaign.. Many, Many, Many were people in the health field who felt the ACA could use some improvements, but this was a great starting point in the right direction.
