eagle90 I am our organization's representative (CR). I do all those things (I do not micromanage, however). I attend every unit meeting, committee meeting, campout, fundraiser, recruiting function, school night, camporee, long-term camp, and OA event because I love this Scouting stuff. I also attend every District Committee meeting. Strangely, I am the only CR who attends the meetings. It makes the District Committee fairly uncomfortable. I go to every Roundtable and every training session I can make. I have attended SM/ASM Leader Specific & Outdoor Skills three times, and will attend again this Fall. In a perfect world every CR would be involved. I am a black & white kind of guy; the job description says "do this thing," I do that thing. I would not turn down a paycheck tho, heh. One hour a week...uh huh.

Your hypothetical Scouter has the BSA position code "CR." Scan a copy of BSA publication #33118D, "The Chartered Organization Representative." Refer to the pages listed. - Actively work to recruit new Scouts, families and leaders (page 5) - Actively set up fund raising opportunities (page 7) - Over see the Troop Committee and The overall Unit Program (page 1,2,4,6) - Arrange to obtain the necessarily awards and turn in assorted paperwork to Council (page 5,6,7) - Work with volunteers to ensure they are trained in their positions and help them as much as possible to make their jobs smooth (not necessarily easy, but easy and organized as possible to perform) (page 4,5,6,7) - Attend monthly Roundtables and stay in contact with the Unit Commissioner (page 6,7) - Stay on top of and keep the committee informed of upcoming events, things going on at the Schools the unit services (where the kids attend), the location where the unit meets, with their sponsor organization, etc. (page 2,4,5,6) Easy to describe, difficult to find.

Memorable experiences- Every moment I spend and have spent at H. Roe Bartle Scout Reservation as a scout and scouter. Becoming a tribesman in the great Tribe of Mic-O-say. Watching my sons become tribesman in the great Tribe of Mic-O-Say. Attending the NESA Jamboree at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD, wasn't bad. ...and, if I may be just a dad for a moment, every moment I spend and have spent with my three sons in the BSA. This summer will be our (my wife and I) first extended "empty nest" experience; my middle son will be serving his third year on staff at H. Roe Bartle Scout Reservation and my youngest will be serving his first year on staff at HRB. My greatest experience? Watching my sons grow from boys to men in the BS of A. YIS

Hello! I am a long time lurker and recently a first time poster. My family are all scouts and scouters. My sons are scouts or former scouts. My wife is a scouter. I was, until recently, a simple assistant scoutmaster in a small, tightly knit troop. I have never missed a meeting or campout (a sin of pride, I know). I am now a newly appointed COR (and MC). As a newly appointed COR, I am a bit taken back by the job. I gave up my comfortable job as SA to be COR. SA was so easy- all of the responsibility and none of the authority, slogging thru the trenches with the guys and letting the SM take care of the politics. I am a little alarmed by the CO and CCs confidence in my ability to perform as the COR. I am also very concerned about my ability to perform as COR given recent circumstance within the unit. In a perfect world, the former COR would have mentored me before the transition (a long story, 2400 words, 42 paragraphs). This avenue is closed to me. Instead, I spend hours researching, reading, and gathering printed material. I have, literally, stacks of stuff. I am a voracious reader. Then I reacquainted myself with these forums. Honestly, yall have depressed the heck out of me concerning the position of COR. I have read too many posts along the lines of in most councils, the COR is a paper tiger. They seldom ever actually exercise their vote at an annual meeting. And there does not appear to be much interest by the professionals to see that they do. One post read something like (the COR) attended a District meeting and was asked by (a District member) why he was there? COR sounds like a lot offun. I have learned a lot of things reading thru the posts here. I hope those who have walked this trail before can help me out. YIS

It has taken me almost 3 years from registration on this forum to submit my first post. Here goes: There are 22 unit position codes on a BSA Adult application. Do all adult volunteers assume one of these positions? You must be SM, SA, MC, etc. I am interested in the MC position code, specifically. The Chartering Organization "select(s) a unit committee of parents and members of the organization who will screen and select unit leaders..." If a unit's leadership positions are occupied (SM, SA, etc.) and a unit's committee positions are occupied (CC, secretary, treasurer, advancement, et al), then all other adults joining the unit are, by default, MC? A hypothetical situation: a group of individuals (family group, fraternal organization, etc.) with a specific agenda fills out adult applications, pay $10USD each, and become (by default?) a voting bloc (of a unit committee). This voting bloc supports a specific agenda. The agenda is adopted by sheer weight of numbers. The voting bloc then disappears, having no further involvement in the unit. I was asked this question and did not know how to answer. I have searched the archives of this forum. Logically, the onus is on the CO to keep this sort of thing from happening. Realistically, the CO, with membership and relationships in mind, may unintentionally allow it to happen. YIS(This message has been edited by DDibben)
