Welcome. Enjoyed reading your introduction. Sounds like you are having fun and learning perseverance at the same time. Woodbadge is awesome but I beg to differ. FOXES are the best animal...bob whites are but a snack. We all have to watch out for those bears tho.... lynn

8 - 5th graders 1 - 6th grader is our new troop. HELP!
lynncc replied to Old ASM New SM's topic in The Patrol Method
I just wanted to chime in and say that sounds alot like the woodbadge course I just completed. Started out "adult" lead, ended up "scout" lead. As I was reading all the replies and thinking of the original post I immediately thought of the coaching phase leading into the mentoring phase of leadership. You have to first coach or teach them how then you slowly fade from the picture and become more of a mentor. There when they need you. Don't forget...Failures are a great learning opportunity. It's okay if they make mistakes. The other scouters have givin you (and me) some great ideas to run with. Have fun. lynn -
Finished the course, now to work on tickets

uz2bnowl, thanks for asking, We had great weather. It rained the night before we got there. So the ground was nice and soft for us. The weather cooled off (it can get quite hot here in Texas). Unfortunately we did not qualify for the polar bear award as the temp was only in the high 30's and low 40's. The wind graced us with its gentle breeze. It is such an awesome site to see the American flag stretched out straight high on the flag pole. The sun however was not as nice and did not come out friday. Saturday we had perfect weather to work in. the sun did join us for our work project clearing out the brush and cutting down small trees. the temp warmed up (gotta love texas) with very little to no breeze. The Gillwell flag looked so pathetic just hanging there upside down. Yes the program patrol flew the flag upside down. The SPL did have them rectify the situation and they did suffer the consequences of such indignities on our flag. My goals...we are a very small pack in the process of regrowth. My vision is to have a vibrant, fun pack filled with boys. So I have set goals to do this. Some of the goals have taken the form of ticket items. We have no outdoor program as it is so am planning outdoor outings, camping trips etc...We are going to have the first annual raingutter regatta and invite a sister pack to join us. They invite us to their pinewood derby. I'm going to work with the homeschool community on recruitment. It was absolutely great. For real no joke no sarcasm it was awesome. Wish I could go again. Maybe someday ......I used to be a staffer....sounds good. In the meantime...I used to a fox. lynn -

Just finished the course today. Had a blast. Learned lots. I am a den leader and really enjoyed the patrol method. I now know where the boys are headed. The biggest thing the course did was to get me to focus on my "mission". I am now more objective and have a "plan" to follow to accomplish these goals. On a side note the commraderie with other scouters was awesome. Loved being around so many people with different scouting backgrounds and experiences. I am not an experienced camper so I got a lot out of the camping thing. Mostly from my patrols members. They taught me how to do things, tie taut lines, secure a bear bag (okay we have no bears but we do have racoons...as one patrol found out the hard way). I learned how to strain our dish water with pine needles. Again all from my fellow foxes... I was in a great patrol. I used to be a fox. Foxes, Laid back....Waaaay back (okay you had to be there...lol) lynn

AARDVARK I have a question??????
lynncc replied to theysawyoucomin''s topic in Wood Badge and adult leader training
Just got back today from my second weekend. We did like you did. Planned our own menus and blew the budget...hehehe....but we ate good. Both weekends we had "guests" staff at our table, or campsite. These were assigned at the beginning of the course and we had to "invite" them to join us. Lots of fun. We got to meet the staff that way. lynn -
just signed up for woodbadge
lynncc replied to lynncc's topic in Wood Badge and adult leader training
thenry you are going to have so much fun. This weekend is our 2nd and last weekend. Bummer. Looking forward to it. If I could only motivate myself to pack...oh well... Have a great time. -
I must be weird. I loved my BDU's. As a nurse I had a choice of 3 uniforms. The horid white dress thing, The green class A or B or the BDU's. Loved my BDU's. So comfortable. I would go for solid colored green BDU style pants and a tan shirt with sleeves that roll up like the BDU's. They make womens blouses that do that and they are so nice when a cool breeze comes up. Just roll them down..... "BDUs are designed for crawling around on your hands and knees for days in the mud, for lasting months in even the worste climates imaginable, and for being able to be used in any climate zone (meaning they suck equally in every climate zone)." GEE and I thought that's what boys do. My 2 cents. lynn

oh gag me with a pitch fork. (how do you do those smiley face things) my father jokes that I was switched at birth I cannot stand gravy. You are wasting perfectly good sausage by drowning it in glue. yuck....Now where did I stash my pop tarts....lol You guys don't really know me I have a warped sense of humor and I just love all the responses people give. I just had to do this. (still gagging at the thought of sausage gravy) My friends always leave plain sausage out for me before ruining it with the gravy stuff. Arn't they great friends... Now on another note. We had our patrol meeting last night. For dinner we are having frozen salmon croquettes (somebody wanted to use them up...hehehe) loaded mashed potatoes, corn bread and lemonaide. For dessert rice krispie bars with peanut butter. Yummy. I can eat those for breakfast if you guys cook.....or they do something equally disgusting like oatmeal..gag. The guys are doing a chicken and stove top thing for lunch and chicken and rice for dinner. Lots of chicken... We are doing pancakes on Sunday morning the add water kind and cook. Yummy. thanks. lynn

Anarchist, That was a great post. I enjoyed seeing the menu broken down that way. I'm new to all this and need step by step instructions.....lol....Really. Not being sarcastic...Once I see something I can run with it and tweak it for what I need but I have to actually see it first. Books of recipes just isn't the same. Don't know why. Anyway, thanks again lynn

yes. Thank-you, thank-you. lynn

the staff told us they would not supply ice. Discouraged us from bringing ice chests but said we could if we just could not live without them. They also said if we had a huge heavy tent they would haul that to the campsight along with cots. Looking forward to my next weekend. Off to go shopping today. Thinking stuffed potatoes and for dessert rice krispie bars. I know, I know, I'll premake the rice krispie bars but I love them so. Plus if the guys pick oatmeal, grits or some such mush I can eat them for breakfast. lynn

Is there such a thing. I have tried searching for it but can't find it on USSSP. Any ideas. thanks lynn

pack light. Don't worry about whatall has been said. We (I) like to pick things apart after the fact. Go in with an open mind and plan on having lots of fun. Wish I could spend more weekends at "Happy Land". Which will make sense after you go. Lynn, I used to be a fox.

21st Century Wood Badge Participants- Reflection
lynncc replied to Eamonn's topic in Wood Badge and adult leader training
I have only done weekend one. I really like the patrol setting. This has helped me from a cub standpoint understand the boy scout thing. The listening exerc, was great.it really opened my eyes? on how to listen so that people feel comfortable telling you things and giving more info as needed etc... The win all you can thing was strange. out of the 3 student patrols on our side of the room. 2 of us figured it out. The other the BEARS did not and they were not happy. How did they get all the type A personalities in the patrol and our patrol got all the type B's. Great for us. We work great together. anywayy.. We only saw October Sky. Good movie but by sunday our butts were getting sore from sitting on those metal chairs. I used to be a fox lynn -
Congratulations. lynn

I have only had OWL training. It was a great course had lots of fun. You have to have BALOO training to go on a camping trip. If you have several people that will be BALOO trained then take the OWL. If you run the risk of no one having BALOO on a camping trip then do BALOO otherwise can't do the trip. Most of the OWL stuff was basic. Knife saftey, knots, cooking with a dutch oven and the tin foil pack things. Have fun. lynn
-
howdy, watch out this scouting stuff is addictive. I have received all the training available so far. Still need BALOO but our district offers it in the fall and I missed the last one. I registered for another districts course but the leader broke her foot and cancelled it. I am currently inbetween my Woodbadge weeks. So much fun. lynn

how hard is it to get an invite to philmont training
lynncc replied to lynncc's topic in Wood Badge and adult leader training
BW, interesting idea. I went and looked at the courses again. I don't really see any boy scout courses that would be appropriate for me. Maybe the using the scout oath and law in your everday life thing. I'm not sure as a mom how I would fit into the boyscouting program. Alot of the courses sounded fun but not for me. I could be a merit badge counselor I'm sure. I have been a nurse forever so could do first aid etc... Anyway I did run across one that is interesting to me. Reaching out to the homeschool community. As a homeschooling mom that would be right up my alley. In fact that is one of my ticket items (got a verbal-er...e-mail approval) of that one. Was thinking of staying on in cubs to help with the then new leaders. Serving wherever they needed or wanted me. Committee member down to den leader except for tigers. Not overly fond of that age....oh well. -
how hard is it to get an invite to philmont training
lynncc replied to lynncc's topic in Wood Badge and adult leader training
I thought I would ask you guys cause my DE is at a week long training planning thing and is not available. Will try and speak with him next Tues or Wed. BW- I was thinking along the lines of: 1. putting pizzazz into cubscouting. I have a problem in this area. Very quite and reserved unless other people there and "draw me out" just not good thinking stuff on my own. 2. leading pack camping 3. Webelos scout program. I will be the new webelos leader then. thanks for the replies. Was originally thinking of using this as one of my ticket items but have come up with several other ideas instead. Still want to go tho. lynn -
From what I think I understand from reading on the Philmont website you have to be invited to attend the trainings. Am I wrong? How hard is it to get an invite? I don't expect my council to pay my way. Was looking at going not this summer but next and doing something related to webelos as I will then be moving into the webelos leader spot.
