  1. Eagle Class of 2006 Vice-Chapter Chief of the O.A. Assistant Scoutmaster
  2. Does anyone have info on the University of Scouting program. i want to go to our councels but they dont have really any info on it. i was wanting to know other peoples experiences with U of S and if it was worth going to.
  3. hey everyone, I got three really big problems and i was wanting to know what everyone thinks of them and how i can try to fix them. The First one is that the scouts in my troop are not advancing. i know that boy scouts isnt all about advancing in rank but the problem is that we have probably 12 scouts in my troop that are still stuck on scout and have been for the better part of 6 months because they have no will power to even go to Tenderfoot. Last week i tried telling them that advancment is important not because it gives you rank but because of the vaulable skills you gain as you try to complete the requirments for the next rank. i dont know if i got through to them. The Second is that my troop isnt really boy lead. i mean its ran by the SPL but we really dont break into patrols anymore which is probably why our scouts arnt advancing. because for me i got to first class when i was in scouts just by doing stuff with my patrol. but what we do most of the time is just sit there and our scoutmaster talks and he does a really good job but the problem is that i dont think the boys are getting anything out of it. The Third problem im having right now is respect. im 18 years old and i just became an assistant scoutmaster in march but the boys still try to view me as a scout and not a scouter. for example use to me and the guys would just play around...wrestling and stuff like that but what they cant relize is that i cant do that stuff anymore and its really hard for me to get the respect of the boys. they dont want to listen to anything i say and a lot of times i have to go to the older Assisant Scoutmaster to help me get them to listen. the scouts like to throw stuff at me and hit me....which in the past wouldnt bother me cause we were all messing around with each other and just giving each other a hard time...but now i cant because im no longer a youth scout. its hard for me to explain the age diffrence to the boys cause i still got younger scouts that want to share a tent with me when we camp and i have to tell them know and explain to them why. but use to i would always share a tent with a younger scout because i was their age once and i know what it feels like to be alone on your first campout so i try to help them out. but the point is they try to treat me like a kid and im not. to you older scouts im still a kid but to the younger kids i should be seen as a adult figure. does anyone have any advice?
  4. its me again....sorry to re-type another message. i just also wanted to state the fact that the nearest NESA chapter around here is a little over 100 miles away. its a 2 hour trip to there and its only held in town were the scout office is.
  5. hi, i have been on here before asking questions about scouts. as a young scouter im still trying to find out some new things. I guess my next question is how can i set up a local NESA chapter in my community. I come from small town but the town im going to college at is a pretty good size town with 3 diffrent scout troops and one of the troops being a Latter Day Saints troop and at least in my area a lot of eagles come from the LDS troop alone. i figured it would be a good idea for us to form a NESA chapter mainly because of what i like to call troop seperation. from my scouting experence i have learned that on district campouts that the boys stay with just their troop and really dont go out of their way to meet new people. a few years ago i made it my goal to break this trend and to get scouts to be more active with other scouts outside of their own troop. I found a way through the OA to do this. When i became chapter cheif i made it my goal to motivate my chapter to do ceremonies again and even earn honor chapter and we did and now our chapter is very strong. and when we go camping all the OA member get together and hang out. but i hate it because we just talk about OA stuff and it keeps all the other none members out of the group. so i was thinking that the NESA chapter would be a great way to get people to come out of their shell as well as inspiring younger boys to become eagle. also this would give younger scouts the oppurtunity to ask other eagles questions about scouts and what being eagle means. so my question is how do i go about starting a chapter of NESA at my town? i would apperciate anyones advice. thank you Lee Shelton, Eagle Class of 2006 Assisant Scoutmaster
  6. hey, i had a question about venturing stuff but it put it under the venturing part of the website. so if anyone could please help me on my question it would be greatly appreciated. if you have any venturing expreience please reply.
  7. hi, i have been on here a few times asking questions about Boy Scout positions for people 18-20 years of age and about District committees. and i want to thank everyone who has helped me with me problem. it was all exceltent advise and really opened my eyes to some things. buy now i have a diffrent question. a few months ago i was talking with my district trainer about setting a venture crew up in a town very close to where i live. its an excelt location for one because its turning into a college town because of university there. well i hgavent been in much contact with the trainer latly and i was wondering about the venture crew idea we had back in march. well i started looking and it looks like he got it all set up and i will be joining the crew while staying assistant scoutmast at my troop. and i was wondering if it would be better to work on my siliver award or work on my ranger award. like i said in the past im 18 years old and i think in would be to difficult to earn both awards before i turned 21 and i know they say that venturing siliver award is the highest in venturing but the ranger award is highest in outdoor venturing from the way it looks and i was wondering would i be more of an asset to everyone as a silver awarder or a ranger? thank you for your time and i ask anyone to please respond to thing message. i have found that everyones experienced advise on here is very helpful. and once again i thank everyone who has responded to my messages. thank you Lee
  8. i was wondering if there are any BSA adult posisitons open for Scouters who are younger then 21. Im 18 years older. i have been in scout for years and i earned my Arrow of Light award as a cub scout and my Eagle Scout award as a boy scout. i have been active for years and i have worked closely with the District Committee for 2 years now as a Chapter Chief in the O.A. I am also the Assisant Scoutmaster of my troop. but i have done so much in my district and became so well known that i have been talking with lots of scoutmaster from other troops in my district our discussions range from them asking me questions about the O.A. to asking me to set up a scouting program on my college campus. But i want to be more involved with the district instead of just one troop. dont get me wrong i love my job as A.S. but i feel that i would be more help to scouts on my district level. but i cannot get on the district committee until im 21 and right now im 18 and i feel out of place because i want to help people on a district level but because of my age im restricted to my one troop. and the worst part is i have new adult members from other troops asking me questions because i have been in scouts so long. i would like the advise of the older scouter and i would apprecate them helping a young scouter like me. thank you. Lee
  9. hi, my name is lee shelton and i had a few questions about District Committees. i have been in scouts since i was 11 and i got my Arrow of Light as well as my Eagle Scout. Right now im 18 years old but i have worked with a district committee very close as a Chapter Chief in the O.A. i know that my age is younge but in scouting my experience in almost unbeatable in my District. I want to become a member of my Districts committee. I feel that my skill would be better of working on the committee and helping my districts instead of just working with my troop. i know i probably sound errogant but i cant help that i feel that i could be more help by being on the committee. do any of you older scouters have any advise for a younger one. like i said i really want to join the committee but im afraid that my youth might cause a problem even though i know the member of the committee very well. thank you.
