  1. I haven't read the other replies to this so forgive me if this is a repeat. New parents are always allowed on campouts. By NOT letting them go you are violating YP, plus everyone has the right to see and witness the program. Give these parents something to do...knots, fire wood, cooking.....we can always find something and the help is always needed!
  2. You miss the whole point of the game... You can be greedy in life or not. You can created win-win situations so that everyone wins. Our class had 8 patrols and 7 members in each. If everyone would have trusted the other the entire room would have collectively made $64,000 dollars and everyone would have won. I have taught this exercise in team building and self-help type settings. The BSA calls it the game of life but they do not explain the meaning.....you re to reflect and find the meaning yourself. The answer is that "The way you play the game is the way you play your life." Think about it....think about the way you played the game. John Denver wrote a song about this game after he played it at the same place I once played it. It's called "It's About Time". It's a full moon over India and Ghandii lives again.....who's to say you have to lose for someone else to win. In the eyes of all the people the look is much the same....for the first is just the last one when you play a deadly game. Take from it what you will but look back and examine the way you felt and reacted while you played. Better yet, are you trying to justify the way the played it?
  3. Can anyone tell me what the requirements are for the Scoutmaster key according to the 2007 printing of the Leadership training committee guide. There seems to be some confusion with a lot of people about this. I went to the shop on Wednesday but they were out of the pamphlet. I have a SM who would has earned it unless the NYLT requirement is included. Thanks, ASMT530
  4. Shortridge Yes it is the game of life. It is mostly referred to as the black and red game. Red would represent the axe and log and black would represent the beads.
  5. This seems like a good post to burn my first posting to.... I have taken a LOT of team building, self help, and corporate quality management type courses and Woodbadge was a repeat of a lot of different parts from one training course or another....just presented in a different way. I found it interesting to step back and watch my behavior as this material was presented to people. For most (which I found hard to swallow) this was the first time they had been exposed to any of it. When the "axe and log", "bead" game was played I could not believe that 55 people in that room had never played that game and what's more, didn't understand the impact of the game. John Denver wrote "It's About Time" after playing that game. It was presented to him in a completely different context but the game is the same. If you examine the game and your behavior during the game closely you will find that the way you played that one game is typical of the way you live (or play) your life. I used to teach a lot of the WB problem solving stuff and I have been through most of it several times. What makes it special is the environment it is taught in, the history behind it and and the benefits the training brings to Scouting. It is all good.
