Good Luck Nick!!!!

"Based on conversations with our advancement chair, the quarter master is not going to work because the boy didn't go on any camp outs during this time." So he did not perform any quartermaster duties? Is there a reason he did not camp? (just curious) Did he attend Den Chief training through his district or council? Can he do the den chief job for another few months to satisfy those that deny?

Have you asked for some guidence from higher up within the Girl Scout organization? I would start there. This cannot be the first time this has come up. Good Luck.

What are your units/councils doing for families in need?
kbandit replied to Beavah's topic in Open Discussion - Program
Our troop has a few families, that I know of, who have lost jobs. I try and watch and see who is coming to activities and who is not and try and find out why. Most will not come right out and say it is because of funds unless you specifically ask. If I find it is because of funds I will contact parent(s) and let them know it can be taken care of. I know our council will do the registration fees if asked to. Our troop is in a scoutreach area. Our troop is able to take care of this ourselves. Hubby and I paid for an unemployed adult leader to attend summer camp this year because we wanted this adult be able to attend. We will continue to fund scouts or scouters who need the help to attend activites. It is kept between us and them. Small price to pay for the smiles it brings. Bottom line is we try and take care of our own. -
Best time for W-2 to bridge to a BS Troop
kbandit replied to WestCoastScouter's topic in Open Discussion - Program
What do the troop(s) your W2's are crossing over to think a good time is? Our troop likes to get W2's in Feb. because that gives the new scouts time to camp, get funding for summer camp, get to know the troop, parents comfortable with leadership, troop gets to know the scout before they go with the troop to summer camp. Our troop would think April as a late cross-over. My 2 cents -
What you need depends on what you need to keep track of. If it is 1 checking account a notebook to keep treasurer's reports in. Keep track of expenditures and incoming money with a description of what or where monies have come or gone on a neatly written paper. Make sure to notate the scout/person giving you the money. I like a two part small reciept book. Keep it simple and make sure others can understand by looking at your work what has taken place. I keep track of 1 checking account, 20 scout accouts and 12 adult accounts with ledger pages and a notebook. Popcorn and wreath sales I do use an excel program that one of our adults put together for the troop. This is for a Boy Scout troop. I have had parents ask to see the activity of their son's account, take the page out and let'm look. Not had a problem. Keep it simple.

current CM to become TroopMaster, to a boy-led BoyScout troop from CubScouts
kbandit replied to Exibar's topic in Cub Scouts
I would certainly go on a campout with the troop and see what goes on there. I would become an Asst. Scoutmaster right now attend meetings, trainings, committee meetings. Sit in on Scoutmaster conferences and if possible a board of review or two. Just as an observer. Scouts need to learn "how to fail" and deal with the outcome. Life is full of failures one kind or another. Learn from less than ideal outcome. One of the duties of a leader is to make sure everything can be as safe as possible. Things will not run perfectly everytime. There will be bumps in the plans. All part of the adventure. I think the big adjustment for you as well as it has been for alot of us leaders is letting our "little boys" plan and do for themselves. This is how they become leaders. When something does not go according to the plan ask what could have been done differently instead of telling them how it could have been done. Sure scouts and parents would rather have someone plan everything and do. Less work and effort for everyone else. Please don't go in and try to change the boy led troop. Find out if it's a lack of knowledge that leads to less than ideal outcomes and teach from there. You stated that the adults sit back even to the point of major failure What was the major failure?? I have 20 yr old Eagle and 14 yr old Life 2 MB's (PM and FL)& project. -
Have you tried sending the MBC a note to their last known address? They could have left a forward with the post office. Worth a try.

Add some baking chips to the cake mix. Peanut butter, butterscotch, etc. The ones you would use in making cookies. Small candies. Think M&M's etc

Sorry to stray off topic. But glad to hear I am not the only person who cannot find what I want at BSA website.

You stated that you were "second in command" does that mean that you are an assistant scoutmaster(?). It would be a good idea to go to the committee and give a first hand accout of what transpired at summer camp even as "just a parent." One thing our troop has done in the past with "problem" scouts was have every scout and parent sign a reminder that all would be on scout behavior at all times or the parent will be called to pick up the scout from where ever we happened to be. The only time we used it was 6 hrs. away from home and an out of control scout on heavy meds that weren't working as they were supposed to. If the parent couldn't/wouldn't do this don't send them. At this point in time we no longer have to have the reminders signed. Life is good. LOL Safety is every adult's concern and must be a priority. If these scouts cannot behave in a safe manner then ..... Improper use of knives at least confiscate the knives until they redo totem chit. Not allowed to have a knife until this is completed.

Our local AHA had available free CPR Anytime kits. Our troop filled out an application and we picked up our "mini Anne" last week. Head and chest unit. Very compact. From AHA website http://saturn.igetsmart.com/servlet/loaddaemon?Type=5&Load=ahacpr&Field1=801066++++++++++++++&Field2=&Field3=&Field4=1&Field5= Tomorrow I am going to order extra lungs and a roll of responder face training shields. Contact your local AHA and see if they have the application for the free one or you can purchase for under $40.00. It is called "Family and Friends CPR Anytime".

Our troop has a couple of brothers who must be at church early on Sundays they get extra duties on Saturday as they will be gone before camp is tore down. They understand and do the duties. This works for our troop.

Not sure exactly what you are looking for. Have you tried Googling and looking at forms available from other sites? There are free programs to change PDF's to Word. I use Very PDF PDF2Word V3.0. It is 100 use program and works great.

Send me an email and I will load you up with recipes. I have alot on my computer. Lots of choices. I made menu suggestion folders for our patrols as they were eating the same thing over and over. Some adult favorites are roast, potatoes, carrots, onions and lots of gravy in dutch oven, chicken and dumplings, lasagna you get the idea. kbandit572@sbcglobal.net

Don't know your position in the pack but is your committee on board with this? You need to have a written committee approved policy on how this will be administered. Under no circumstances should any checks or cash be given if someone leaves scouting.(It should go to the pack/troop general fund.) Only scouting related expenses should these accounts be used for. You need someone (committee treasurer) who has an understanding on how the set this up otherwise it will be a giant headache. Be prepared for parent questions. Document on an individual scout page each plus and minus(short description of where it came from or where it went). Keep a good record of what is scout accounts and what is general operating money. Will your pack be prepared to write a check to a troop when a scout crosses over to Boy Scout troop? What has your committee decided to do if a scout does not sell enough popcorn? Is there going to be a cap of how much can be in any 1 account? What happens if the pack runs out of general funds? I am the treaserer for a Boy Scout troop with accounts. Please consider if you need individual accouts. You need someone who will stay on top of this and be at most meetings where the questioning parents will be. Trust me they will want to know where little Johnny's five bucks went. How I do it is: went to office supply store and got 3-column accounting pages. I use 1 page per scout. 1 column money -in 1 column money out- total column. If I get a check from a parent I write the check number in description space or wherever the money came from. If money is deducted I write a short description of what it was for. If there are any questions from parents I take the page out of my notebook and have them look it over and then ask any questions. Same with scouts with questions. Not every scout raises the same amount of funds so I do my best to keep accounts private between those who need to know and those who don't. Your treasurer should have an accounting at each committee meeting of what is what. Spell everything out to begin with in writing. Make sure each family understands what is going to happen. Your pack committee needs to be the one doing this. Good luck.

Utilizing Troopmaster POC functions
kbandit replied to Buffalo Skipper's topic in Open Discussion - Program
Glad I am not alone in not knowing how/why to use that function. -
Fill out an adult application for the troop ASAP. From what you have told us about this person I would want my son and anyone else's child as far as possible away from them. You said they were at campout. Did they drive other scouts? If they have to take "medicine" were they driving and taking "medicine" while on the way to/from camp? Scary. You and your wife need a cup of coffee with COR and/or CC. You wife needs to tell what happened to your son. 1st person. As for asking scouts if they want him there not their say. Adult issue. If nothing is done with this adult I would run to another troop. Not worth the hassel for years to come. It is every adult volunteer's duty to safe guard all members. An adult putting their hands on a scout, my son or not, I don't think so. My troop would have had adult males all over that right then and there. The she tigers would have been waiting in the wings. LOL Good luck. Please update this thread.

What happens when a scout is held back at school?
kbandit replied to packbrain's topic in Cub Scouts
I do not have anything in writing. My first thought is this is adding to requirements and not allowed. In my thinking he is being punished by Cub Scouts because of something that happened outside of scouts. The school dosn't punish for something that happens outside of school why would scouts. Have you looked at the Cub Scout Leader Handbook? The answer may be in that publication. I think if you look at the requirements for each rank it says complete X grade or be X old. This scout will be doing the age based requirement for being a certain rank. I have dealt with the joining reqmts. for Boy Scouts. It can be age and/or grade based. If in several years the cub was moving to scouts I would be looking at the joining reqmts. as written and see that he met the reqmts. Being in 4th grade at the time, so. Age and/or AOL would be his reqmt. My two cents. -
Our troop conducts BOR on an as needed basis. We are lucky as we have several committee members (more that 3) that attend each week's meeting. BOR at summer camp did 3/4 last year (T-1). As a committee member doing BOR as needed is part of the program. I do not know where it is written in a manual/guidebook. I have seen that Court of Honors should be a least 4X a yr. Maybe this is where the thinking of 4X a yr for BOR is coming from. As for Eagle Palms, most Eagles are close to 18 and it is important to do the BOR ASAP. Any chance maybe Committee Chairman could speak to the Scoutmaster regarding this? Just because your son in not close to 18 should not matter as I am sure he wants to get all the Palms he can earn. Scoutmasters should not complain when a scout is advancing. Could having a scoutmaster conference before/after a meeting be an option? Good luck and tell your son congradulations on Eagle and Palms.

You did not say how many other scouts are in your son's troop. It could be the SM is reluctant because they aren't sure they can do what is required for your son and do thier duties to the rest of the scouts at the same time. You stated adults are slim in count at overnites/camp. Is there an adult family member or friend that would be willing to sign up as an adult member of your son's troop? That would ease up the responsibility of your son's needs on the SM. I am glad there is a camp this year that your son will attend.

I would check with your District Executive/Council. I am sure they have had this come up in the past.
