The only rank that you are not allowed to put multiple credits towards is webelos. This is the only place giving multiple credit is addressed in cub scouts and expressley not permitted. The rest seems to be up to the leaders/parent. Any other cub scout year it is allowed. I'm not saying to encourage it but it is allowed. you can give belt loop credits at the smae time giving credit towrds an achievement. Generally I don't give credits for both electives and achievemtns for the same item. Besides ,it's so easy to do something else.

Just my 2cents. It's a nice way to spend the day and to be outdoors! Perhaps they will be stopping to see some sights along the way?? See the turning of leaves- depending on the season. Is it part of the Historic Trails Prgram? I'd do patches for all doing the ride. What better way to get families off their couch and put down their video games!! Make sure there are enough adults at all levels so the beginner levels aren't left in the dust alone.

The just for fun "A Scouter is Thrifty" Poll.

If I'm going to buy an "old" version uniform I'd probably first look on ebay and see the best price I could get. In the scout shop it would have to be 40% off or more. If we wanted the new one I'd try to get as many people in the troop together and see if we could get a quantity discount on the new one. -
Parental involvement & Scouting . . . .
Karen_216 replied to Gold Winger's topic in Open Discussion - Program
Gold Winger, The rope representing how much time we have to spend with an influnce our kids lives was about recruiting adults for Cub Scouts. My time will be done after he moves on up. Even at his level we are working on stepping up and leadership. I'd love to send that group of 7 -8 year olds out on a hike led by a 10 year old but BSA says I'm not allowed. Gotta have a few adults for them to fight with along their way. these adults in BOY SCOUTS are doing themselves and the boys a disservice. Show them how and let them do it. Cut those apron strings. -
Yes, that measuring tape example (or rope) was what I was looking for- It also can go further as John suggested and have the hours in school, or sleeping taken off as well. At the end there is a little piece left. I saw it in a recrutment training last year. We really need leaders this year. CC and myself (Cm) are going to make special visits to visit dens to talk to parents to get them more involved. We're using the 100 point plan this year at sign ups and to fill out at the first pack meeting for existing families.

Frank- thanks for your hard work and constant updates. your program has made hundreds (thousands?) of leaders lives simpler!! We can spend our "one hour a week" on planning rather than paperwork!!

A few years ago I read an analogy (or saw a demonstration)about how few years parents have to spend with their children and to be an influence in thier lives. It was in the contaxt of recruiting and suggested getting a rope with average life span, and went on to segment off so that at the end there was only a few inches left.tjhis represented thetime as a parent wehave left to spend with our children. Does anyone have this analogy or formula ? It's a really good recruting tool to get parnets to participate and I wanted to use it this year.

It's a very appropriate first "award" done immdediately for every scout that joins. We made games out of it. The ADL brought the lines as cutouts printed very large. Everyone repeated together then we gave each boy a piece and lined them up and they each said their part. Then we mixed them up and they put them back together. This also helps with reading- you can read the lines they have if they can't read that well yet. there are also oodles of papers that make a game out of it so they get in other ways. Don't underestimate the boys. In 1st grade my son had to have learned- hail mary, our father, glory be and other prayers. you say them every night and everyone learns together. I also made little "wallet" sized cards with the Promise on one side and law of the pack on the other and laminated them. They had a quick reference. You open and close your meetings with these basics and it's one meeting with maybe another review beginning of the next. This is the basis to everything they'll learn. Teach them right away to come to attention when the sign is shown and they'll follow along.

Put together not just a handout but a parent info packet. Are you doing sign ups too?? What about uniforms and the cost of these and the proper insignia. What about adult roles and a description? Do you have a trifold display or bring a laptop w/ a powerpoint showing pack pics and how much fun they've had?? displays of beltloops and trophies and neckerchiefs and some fun stuff they can build. Maybe Lowes will give you some of their build-n grow kits they have to give out. Talk to your council- ours put a flyer out for us with dates and contact info for us to hand out. You can have your registration date on there.

Yes, he feels it was just an accident at a play- at- your- own -risk type event. I believe he does not intend to file anything but it has brought up some what-if's in my mind. He is a very active parent in the pack (his wife is Treasurer) and every year has been upgrading our Lane Brain (or lame brian as we like to call it!!) for the pinewood track, He was attempting to avoid colliding w/ a cub and is extremely thankful the cub did not sustain any injury (except a slight little spill) but still tripped over him and went into the air and landed on his right shoulder. He would have collided full force if he did not slow himself down. It was just one of those things. He was the only non registered adult in our cub group. Myself and the others are all part of Committee in various positions.(we all had to submit rosers and physicals for the camp and it's council run) He has a great attitude as- those things just happen. But what do you do with adults that attned to be with their sons that are not registered? And what about those recruiting events? We were told we'd be covered if it was for the intent of gatherering new members.

hi all, While at council resident camp last week one of our parents suffered a broken collar bone.It was asports related accident not any type of negligence. He is not a registered leader but submitted all the forms required for attendence at residence camp. I let him know (and he was given forms as well) he can submit out of pockets insurance does not cover to BSa for secondary coverage. He said he had a low deductable and probably would not. My question is to anyone who may have an idea: he's a parent and not a leader- would he still be covered? Do they have disability as well? He's self employed and will have to have surgery and may not be able to work 6-8 weeks. this just incident just has me curious- we're not expecting anything but it would be nice to know.

Our ANNOUNCEMENTS WENT: Announcements Announcements; When you're up, you're up (stand up) When you're down, you're down (sit down) And when you're only half way up you're neither up nor down (stand up then sit down). Oh yes the kids love any little ditty- Love on top of spaghetti(goes way back rememebr when I was a kid) and also Tom the toad (I made the mistake of putting all verses I could find in the camp book and kids made us sing them all !!)

We are planning a water rocket derby as part of our popcprn kickoff. We have a Dad that is making the launchersso 4 can go off at once. We are starting to collect various empty plastic bottles. What do we do to make this organized and fun?? Do we have a table for them to put together their own rocket or have them bring one they did themselves (I guess this is best option). Prizes based on most creative, etc?? We are combining w/ popcorn info and sales training- do we let those first to sign up for show-n-sells get to launch first?? We were going to have tickets we give out for prizes. Who else has done a Water Rocket event and what did you do?

I agree he's not setting a good example. That said maybe he is in contact w/ someone who said "yes we have plenty of space" so decided he could wait until the last minute to decide. He pays more, he has to get his son there, he has to hear his son cry about not being with friends. Don't let it worry you. Hopefully in the future he'll learn his lesson and they won't have space. Councils will let people add on unitl last minute if there's space. They want the money. About the not following the rules and deadlines thing- that's just what some people do. they don't think until last minute. As a CM I always am first on the list, not last. you go, have fun and don't concern yourself w/ his plans. You plan based on what you have registered now. I wouldn't keep asking him or others if they are joining. If they do and let you know- let them provide the xtra supplies needed.

Yes, the Webelos doing the actual presentation and raising of the flag is good. All the other scouts should wear their uniform and salute. This will meet all the ranks achievements as well. I think it sounds like a great honor for your pack that you were asked. What a great thing for no-scouts to see. I would not be surprised if you get a lot of inquireis about joining from boys present.
-
You are correct that BSA does not allow solicitation of funds by any individual unit. The reason being scouts are encouraged to pay their own way. If you had posted on any other heading you would have had postings out the ying-ya letting you know. Believe me I know !!! It's in the back of the leaders book if you want to refer to that. I think near the request for fund raising forms.

Jessica, i know this is a boy scout forum but... One thing girl scouts do is called swaps. Each Troop (or youth in your case) makes up 2 dozen so little "swaps" and then they put them on their hat or shirt or bag or whatever. Then they all go around and talk and "swaP" their little keepsakes. They are small little crafts with a pin attched. they are made out of beads or foam and have thier troop number and where they are from on them. They are keepsakes and end up w/ 2 dozen differnet ones once exchanged .Those girls who have been in years have quiet a collection. These make the girls interact and gives them something to share and prepare for. here's an site on how to make: http://parentingteens.about.com/od/girlscoutsandgirlguides/a/swaps_girlscout.htm http://www.gsswaps.net/ The kids could put their names on them so they each know someone else is out there that has gone through it too.

Our council seems to be trying to consolidate functions as well. District events now all council-wdie (although you could still go to other district events in the past and are called Special interest Prgrams now instead of Camporees). RT's are going to 1 council Rt instead of each district having own (will we feel lost- what about those that have to travel a distance- will they now not be able to attend? and items unique to certain districts ). Maybe a reflection of National changes????
-
If you are running the event you can get up and talk about it if you are comfortable or have the Cubmaster talk about it and just have you stand up and wave. I've had the Committee Chair get up and talk to parents about volunteer positions (fell on deaf ears). He dressed up as a Rev war soldier to promote and event (it was cool). I like the idea of other people standing up and talking as it lets everyone know- it takes a village.

As a wolf leader I combined the LNT w/ the YOur Living World acheivement. Of course it takes more than one meeting. While we discussed reclying and how to be environmentally conscious we read the LNT guidelines and each boy took a point and drew a pciture about it. We recylced at the pinewood derby as there was only 1 trash can. We also divided up all the paper products to put in the church's special paper dumpster for the church to get money. I think doing one project at a time gives them more understanding on what they are doing. I do give multiple credits sometimes- towards a loop as well as an elective. other ideas- doing a stream cleanup or participating in Earth Day.
-
I think that project sounds more on the Wolrd Conservation end of the award. As far as Wolves- thay can get a chance to use the tools and help. they cab spread mulch and help palnt some plants. Of course all these are on the Wolf prgram but it's up to you whether you count towards those or not. If boys come back more than once I would say to do that, if they only show up one day only use towards one award or requirement. My den helps maintain one of the school gardens. we weed and plant flowers. We have done it 2 years in a row. I have used towards Good Turn hours and electives.
-
Do you take some boys out to pack meetings or local pack events? What about the pack recruting nights to keep tehir possible new recruits entertained? Pick out a few that are responsible and have them go to some pack functions. Try to motivate them- "man these little guys really look up to scouts- having a den chief will give you a bunch of kids that will admire you for life!!". Just throwing out some thoughts!! I know how much packs appreciate a good den chief!!

Take it to your CC and double check. Their sig is required (or maybe to CM ??). I listed what I did so he knwe when he signed mine.

If you are not sure I'd say you did not earn it, otherwise you'd know what Roundtables were as well as Pow-wow and Univeristy of scouting. not every councli has the last two but the RT's are open to all leaders. Find out about them and attend this year and try for the Cub scout Leader knot. The only item I missed for my Tiger year was the RT/PW/Uscouting requirement. Since that line item is required and not optional that rules it out. I was able to earn my den leader award this year. I looked back after the year and was able to chekc off everything and did not start the year trying to earn this, as I did not know about it at the time.
