  1. So, female Venturers should only teach other girls? She is Red Cross 1st Aid/CPR cert., Powder Horn, as well as VLSC, and Kodiak.
  2. The age gap is roughly 5 years, other then her brother, who is 2 years younger. As DG98 suggested, they do listen much, much better when she is speaking to the group, and I know the other ASM's appreciate her efforts to help out. She has been a Troop Guide at CAmporees, and has made several presentations that related to her Bronze medal. They are her unit when she needs to do some teaching, but it's changing.
  3. She's in a Venturing crew, and has been supportive of the troop, ever since her brother joined. I guess the next question is if girls, under 18, who are an adult leader in the troop, are eligible for OA?
  4. Can a female, HS graduate, 18 year old be registered as an ASM for a troop? If an 18 year old Boy Scout is considered an adult, is that the same for an 18 year old girl?
  5. Quite the discussion this turned out to be. I think Sherm's last sentence about says it all. I would have loved to kept life simple and just wore my blue loops, but my son joined a troop, left his pack, and I ended up taking on responsibilities that were more then I could imagine. Each position, whether it was on the District committee, my daughters new crew, or my sons troop, or the OA chapter, had different expectations for how the uniform went with the job. I enjoyed most of what I have done, but have more uniforms then I started out with after Cubs. It's all good.
  6. So, since my primary registration is SM for my son's troop, but I am also the Adviser for our OA chapter, as well as Assoc. Advisor for my daughter's Crew, I'm supposed to wear my SM uniform for all 3?
  7. While we are on this subject, what about male, venturing youth, under the age of 18, wearing AOL and Eagle knots above their left pocket, on their venturing uniform?
  8. If a Venturing youth officer steps up to organize a District or Council VOA, do they wear silver loops for that activity only. What would they wear for regular crew meetings? I see district level adults wearing silver loops all the time, even when at unit meetings.
  9. The training award might be an option, but he did all of his SM training back in 95, and I don't know how much of the listed training existed back then. Since I was the unit leader, he didn't need to do much more then youth protection, which he did. I guess the first two can be done, online, correct? 1. Complete Boy Scout Fast Start training 2. Complete New Leader Essentials 3. Complete Leader Specific Training for your position 4. Complete Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills (for Scoutmasters and assistants) 5. Complete Youth Protection Training
  10. I'm curious how your chapter adviser/OA chapter is represented on the district's committee. It isn't really a chair position on the committee, but who is the chapter adviser ultimately responsible to, the lodge adviser or the district committee chair?
  11. Thanks, Rick, A very good, and timely set of ideas you have there. What are you calling these two Camporees?
  12. We were asked to consider running our district Fall camporee, during our Key 3 at Spring camporee. A little late to spring that on the youth, but I think they want to try and make it work. I'm posting this to try and get some great idea of what kind of Fall camporee we could do, based upon, perhaps, something your chapter has done in the past. Since there will be no OA inductions, it will be just a fun event for our district to come together and just have fun, and be challenged. Our past 3 spring camporee's have been heavily based upon competition and winner take all, so we could use a fun event for this one. If this works, I know the chapter will be doing the district a huge favor. Thanks, in advance.
  13. I just spoke with one of our election teams, who performed an election for a troop in our district. There was a total of 9 boys put up for election, who met the qualifications. Of the 9, 3 were elected with at least half of the votes of the boys, present. Of those 3, the SM disqualified 2 as being not acceptable, even though he put them up for election. There were 3 other boys who fell short of the 50% number of votes (they needed 10 and only got 9). These boys are older, two of which are Star rank and age 16, and one is First class. We are attempting to rebuild a chapter that has had it's membership plummet for a variety of reasons, that I hope to correct. Since the vote is only known by the SM, and probably the CC, I am wanting to call him to discuss this outcome of only one boy being elected out of 9, eligible. This troop has been very supportive in sending boys into the chapter, but in the past few years, very few boys (just one, last year, who completed his ordeal, but was 16 years old.) have come into the chapter from this, the largest, troop in our district. The fact that 2 of the 3 boys elected, were invalidated, after he put them up for election, certainly had an effect on the other 3, who fell short by a single vote. I think this is probably not the place to ask about bending the rules, but these boys are not getting any younger, and they want to continue the tradition of sending scouts from their troop into our chapter, and this particular election is a bit difficult to understand, given the outcome.
  14. Just a quick question... what should a Board of Review for a Life scout entail. I have some candidates that are asking me, and having only sat on an Eagle BOR, I don't quite know what to say.
  15. Just a quick question... There is going to be regional forum for Venturing to explore the creation of activities at the regional level. My daughter volunteered to attend for the council, and had a simple question. Could she wear silver loops at this conference. We have no Council level youth organization for Venturing, beyond the units, which I hope the council will be rectifying, this year.
  16. Thanks, SSS, Very good key points you listed there. I'm going to try the manila for Camporee. It is very dry in NM, if any of you have lived here. We love it, and absolutely are adverse to the humidity the rest of the country takes for granted. Makes it hard to justify Jamboree, along with the pricey cost to go. He basically described wetting the rope and then, depending on how long it was up, having to rewet it.
  17. I was told by an experienced scouter, who did alot of pioneering work, that manila needed to be wetted down to keep it's purchase on the poles, and did not like using it, because of that.
  18. I'm curious, if there are any good recommendations (as in a source) for ropes that work well for lashing. I'm thinking of proposing a structure for our spring camporee, but want to make sure it can be built and stay intact over a long weekend, without coming loose. Spring Camporee around here is always a high wind affair.
  19. I have a group of young scouts going to this months Klondike, and it appears we have lots of snow up on the mountain. I'm looking for ideas of how the boys might be able to put together some inexpensive gear to keep them feet and legs from getting wet. I prefer Sorels and nylon pants, over them, but don't think it's in their budget. Alot of them have military style, all leather boots, but those will have to be waterproofed. Any cool ideas for how a scout can solve this challenge?
  20. Greetings, C21, Even the idea of going that far East from out West is going to be a transition. Coming from a place where the summers are dry and relatively cool, the humidity, heat, and precip. of the East shows how spoiled we are out here. Truthfully, as far as tours go, my son wants to visit as many civil war battle fields, as he can. I know he would appreciate the other historic places, but I can see where this can be a journey of competing landmarks, and the time and money to make it all happen. I admit to being spoiled by the weather of Northern NM, but this is a once in a lifetime opportunity, so I better get plugged into the committee that is going to put this together, so we don't have to give up our place to a growing group of alternates, who got caught by the relatively quick signup, for this 100th. It would be a shame to let that happen. I guess I had assumed the tours would be open to individual participants, and not something each contingent would have to arrange separately. But then, that would probably be a nightmare to try and coordinate at the time this would be happening, which shows how little I know about what a Jamboree is, let alone the 100th. It would seem the committee would want some kind of feedback from the participants who are going, to put this together, which would also include the overall cost.(This message has been edited by kahits)
  21. Well, my son and I are signed up & paid a $300 deposit, but have not completed the online registration. My daughter, who will graduate HS in 2010, applied for Venturing staff, and has received her staff patch, but has not been officially been given her LOA (although she is listed on the staff jamboree website as having been assigned a position). I have no idea what it will cost for her to go on staff, but the $6k,for my son and myself, is more then I think my wife will support. Obviously, this will be a first time experience for both my kids, and I really hoped to be able to experience with them. The committee will not meet until the end of January, so the $3k figure is just that, with no breakdowns available until the committee can come up with one. I guess time will tell on this one.
  22. I was notified the cost for attending the 2010 Jamboree from our council (SW US) will be over $3k per person. No idea what this covers, but the airflight is at least covered. Having never gone to a Jamboree before, I'm curious if this is in line with the actual expenses, or is this some sort of fund raiser for the council, as well?
  23. My daughters Venturing crew is confirmed for early, next June. At tonights committee meeting there was discussion about training and preparation for this trip to Sea base, and I thought I would post a question here. If there is anyone who has gone on this week long experience, the question is what kinds of training would be helpful to prepare the crew youth for this experience?
