If and When I get My Kilt I will wear it

I would love to have a system like this to run my CPAP machine...Maybe a few Camp Lights..Charge a few Cell phones..Camera and Video Camera also... But That price and System is Kinda Over Kill..just for Camping.. I am trying to Get our Local Council to install a System to go Solar at our Scout Camp...We Got Plenty of Land and Sun..There is a Company that does Non Profit Installs if you don't want to buy a System..You Agree to buy Electricity from them at about 1 cent per kilowatt used...They Sell the rest to power Company.. I really believe we should buy and Sell our own overage..We could pay for a System in No time i suspect.

or have the standards been lowered to much.. Has scouting adopted a "No Scout Left Behind Program"? Does everyone really believe that so many get it at an earlier age simply because they work harder and are more dedicated now a days than when I grew up and we worked real hard to get just barely just before our 18th Birthday?

They are probably on back order because of recent natural disasters..Units like these are not designed for average everyday casual users. I am interested in a small unit because I require a CPAP Machine to be able to sleep. I need a quite machine to sit outside my tent and run my CPAP..I could get a noisy loud gas one and ruin camping for every within a mile They can be run indoors because they are electric..yea the solar panels are outside and must have Enough light.. Where would most people use these would be like Summer Camps. Where they have lots of Food that could spoil and need refrigeration. Myself I would like to also have a Large enough system to live comfortable for a long time if a Natural disaster came through town..I was here in Wichita Falls in 1979 when our Big Tornado came through...I can tell ya, one of those would have been fantastic..Was not much left standing in areas to block sun light for a long long time afterwards...And Fuel was mighty hard to find for a few days, so a gasoline generator was not useful a whole lot

Amazing how things have Changed.. Back in my days as a Scout we Used "Canvas" Baker or Wall Tents... I was at a Very popular sporting goods Store recently and I was amazed that they had a Nice big Tent which is light Weight which had a Stove vent..Under 1000.. I still prefer the Canvas Tents.. I know all you "Gotta hike 50 Milers in a Day" types are jump on and complain about Weight but oh well.. Once 'outing' was taken out of Scouting and before Leave No Trace made things worse..We would Pitch the tent and build a fire inside a 'fire pit in the Tent' would get nice and toasty. With Today's Scouting issues I can't imagine earning "Wilderness Survival" is anything like it was for us.....Imagine having to cut down living trees and cut off Branches to build a lean to shelter and having to sleep in it.. Nice link on the Winter Sleeping Bag...The Army use to use a 3 piece system..Outer shell to keep Bags clean and Dry...Summer Months you Used one sleeping Bag inside shell...Winter you used another Bag inside of the Other bag...of course those were feather filled Bags..I always used a Sheet inside my Bag...those pesky feathers had a way of poking you..made for some rough Sleeping

I doubt I will be in OA by then My Lodge is a disaster I highly doubt that I will renew my Membership even for Next year. If I continue in OA I will have to register in Another Council either in Oklahoma or in a DFW AREA Council

Who carries a firearm on Scout Outings???
jpstodwftexas replied to Basementdweller's topic in Open Discussion - Program
They did after a while.. They knew the General Area I went off in.. Amazing How you can head off in one Direction and end up in another one...and how Far you really walk when not paying attention..and then to tack on the running like a Mad man..pig did not get me until I got tired of Running and started to climb the Tree..That is when It got in it's licks along with the bites.. Was kinda embarrassing to be found up a tree by several rescuers..but at least I had an excuse...I did appreciate the searchers all 40 of them. I admit I did sleep some and although I did get hurt nothing really was life threatening as in bleed out..but It could have easily been a "found Dead Body" end of search event. But In the first few minutes with all the bleeding I did say a few prayers..I usually pass out at the sight of too much blood, especially my own -

Okay.. Step outside of your perfect little worlds and Look at it from a different point of View.. Scout Camps/ Wilderness Camps are Usually a Fair Distance from Cities so several factors come into play Like our Scout Camp Location many Camping Areas may have limit Wireless Service or not even have wireless service reception. Many have no Monitoring or so much as an old fashion pay phone.. Distance will prohibit rapid armed response. Psychos look for Defenseless People to attack...When as the last time a Nut Case attacked a shooting Contest or a Cop Convention? Just like a Terrorist looking to kill as many innocent people, they are not opportunistic killers, They don't simply wake up and do this, they plan it. They look for the Best place to achieve the most amount damage in the shortest amount of time. They are not like sadistic killers who select targets where they simply slip away only to stalk another victim. They look for large groups of defenseless people to attack. They look where they can indiscriminately shoot as many rounds as possible and hit the most amount of people. They are looking to inflict harm more than likely than to kill.. Irresponsible and reckless carrying should not be allowed. Public Display of weapons (Law Enforcement) should be done right and most of the time discretly. Such as Holstered or slung over shoulder with muzzle pointed away from anyone (Up or Down). If your twirling or Playing Quick Draw McCraw you need your butt kicked and removed from event. Councils could adopt a policy where you obtain permission prior to carrying the weapon.. I work for a Prison, we have to ask permission to carry a weapon onto state prison property prior to carrying it. Conditions have to be meet before you can. Legal recognized Concealed Licensed Handgun.. Must be under two locks at all times . Dealing with Convicted Felons for 10 years has given me more insight into their thinking than many of you. No one will ever truly understand Evil. -

Pig Incident was during a Troop Camp out at a Local State Park.. I went out to gather firewood. Pig started chasing me. I ran like crazy and Pig Followed. I did not holler for help because I did not want anyone to come and get hurt by pig. Thought it would go away sooner or later. Well It Did much later than I had hoped. At one point I thought the pig was gonna be a beaver and chew down the tree to eat me. Skunk kills were because that year there was a Major outbreak of Rabies. Gun was locked inside a Metal Container inside a Lock Box and a trigger lock also. So to have access you had to open 3 locks.. So yes not very readily available, but I would rather save 1 live than save none. The 8 skunks were killed over a 4 month period at the camp. Normally I do not condone the killing of Skunks for no reason..I have had two pets skunks myself. Most Skunks can be avoided however once in awhile they can not. There are signs that a skunk is dangerous. Every skunk killed rabid was out during the day and acting aggressive towards someone. Skunks which avoided people out at night were left alone. -

Can tell yall don't have feral hogs in yalls direction much... A Feral Sow is worse than a Momma Bear In Small Groups I would carry a Weapon more than Likely.. Hidden of Course When Sleeping it would be locked away under two locks When at Camp with 1000 People very very very unlikely Feral hoogs will get near the Camp...Heck even the Coyotes Howl Miles away when we all Camp together. like Most Organizations the Rules are to try and prevent any law suits not about protecting the Kids... God Forbid someone ever Attack a Scout Camp and One of Yall are there and get killed and The Headlines Reads "Massacre at Scout Camp...Hundreds Die..BSA SUED BECAUSE RULES PREVENTED LAWFUL CARRYING OF FIRE ARMS" instead of "Massacre at Scout Camp...Hundreds Saved By Lawful Carrying Gun Owner" -

http://blog.scoutingmagazine.org/2012/12/17/two-connecticut-shooting-victims-were-tiger-cubs-heres-how-to-help/ Article cut and pasted from above link It breaks my heart to report that the horrendous school shooting in Connecticut has hit the Scouting family. The Boy Scouts of America learned that two of the victims, 7-year-old Chase Kowalski and 6-year-old Benjamin Wheeler, were new Tiger Cub Scouts with Pack 170 in the Connecticut Yankee Council. Three other families in Pack 170 lost children at the school, and Tiger Cub Den Leader Peter Baressi was a first responder hero who stayed with the families throughout the ordeal. Victoria Soto, one of the heroic teachers who was killed, was an Explorer as a youth in Stratford EMS Post 4911. When you live several states away from those in pain, its easy to feel helpless. In addition to keeping the families in your thoughts and prayers, Ive learned of an opportunity to send cards, letters and donations to those in mourning. The Pack 170 leadership has asked Connecticut Yankee Council to set up a Memorial Fund to support the five families. Donations can be made out to Pack 170 Memorial Fund c/o Connecticut Yankee Council, P.O. Box 32, Milford, CT 06461. Your family or your Scout unit may wish to send condolence cards and letters. Those can also be addressed to Pack 170″ c/o the Connecticut Yankee Council, P.O. Box 32, Milford, CT 06461. After the jump, a letter from Wayne Brock. Letter from Wayne Brock, Chief Scout Executive To: National Board, Advisory Council, and our BSA family: We are all struggling to come to grips with the tragic school shooting in Connecticut. I have the sad responsibility to report that this tragedy has also struck within the Scouting family. Weve been informed two of the young victims, 7-year-old Chase Kowalski and 6-year-old Benjamin Wheeler, were new Tiger Cub Scouts with Pack 170 in the Connecticut Yankee Council. In addition, three of the victims were siblings of other boys in Pack 170. Victoria Soto, one of the hero teachers, was an Explorer as a youth. Please join me in remembering these victims and families in your prayers. We have been in touch with council leadership. The National Council is offering any support possible during this difficult time. Working with the leadership of Pack 170, the Connecticut Yankee Council has established a memorial fund in support of the five families. If interested, donations, cards, and letters can be sent to the Pack 170 Memorial Fund, c/o Connecticut Yankee Council, P.O. Box 32, Milford, CT 06460 God bless everyone as we take a step back and think about the safety and well-being of our own families and loved ones in the midst of this national time of mourning. Is Boy scouting Family scouting????
jpstodwftexas replied to Basementdweller's topic in Camping & High Adventure
Do you guys just make up stuff to support your side of the story? Experiences based on Family for Me is quite the opposite than most of yours " Wow, your mom set up her camp faster than our leaders" "John why is your Mom chopping all the fire wood for the Leaders?" "Man, your mom lashed together a bigger and better lean to than anyone else" " Crap your mom out shot everyone on the range" "Bummer your mom can not be our scoutmaster, she has better skills than all the dads combined" "Hey ask your mom is we can use some of her fire? No body else can get theirs started yet and we are hungry and freezing. Don't know why we did not cover our wood like she did before it started to rain like she did. Did not think we needed to because the leaders did not do it. Seemed like was a waste of time at the time." -

I agree about the Heritage thing Wichita Lodge 35 Northwest Texas Council 587 Losing the Lodge Number is losing part of the Lodge History
-
Anyone have family/friends who went to the 1965 NOAC with the lodge contingent? Need candid photographs as the only member of Wichita to receive the Distinguished Service Award, Ed Oglesby, received his at the OA's 50th anniversary meeting. The National OA Archives is hurting, badly, for candid photos from every NOAC from 1940 through 1998. So even others would be nice.

Myself I have not gotten any yet so no first hand experience. Your best bet will be one of the Low Light systems because I highly doubt you will have optimum light conditions.. Ever Becoming More popular I believe more systems are becoming more available..some even offer rechargeable battery packs so you can have an immediate power supply handy in case of emergencies or poor planning.

Scouting to me was never a second tier activity for me Scouting is what it is on a personal level by choice. Only School Activity which came close to Scouting was JROTC because we went Camping, Canoeing, Rock Climbing,Repelling, Rifle Team and had Orienteering meets
