New MOU between BSA and Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod
jpstodwftexas replied to AZMike's topic in Issues & Politics
Good... Time to move on -
Anyone have Pictures for Custom Chuckboxes. I have always wanted to design and Build a Chuckbox around My Equipment instead of stuffing a Premade box with what will fit it. Drafting Up a list of What I have in the Way of Utensils, Cookware soon along with My Version of Essential Spices and Dry Goods. Will Sketch up a Rough Draft soon I hope.

There are no Rules for Den Flags...

Get the Bulldozers Out and Level Everything Down to Flat..The Outdoors is UNsafe.. If It was that Dangerous they should not have filmed and Laughed about it.. No One would have Known, boulders laying everywhere. LNT problem, everyone interprets it differently..I was Told I could Not Hammock Camp by one leader.

The Idea behind one Scout Oath and LAW... All Scouting Units are Boy Scouts of America. Why spend Years Learning an Oath and then Having to learn a New one when you Transition.. even Venture is Going to Boy scout Oath and Law. The Majority of Scouter and Former Scouters can Recite the Boy scout Oath and Boy Scout Law but Very Few can still recite the Cub Scout or Venture Crew Oath? Quit trying to make Cub Scouts and Venture Crews a separate Organization. They are Not Step Children. A Leader will adapt the Program to the Boys and still stay within the BSA Rules and Regs. Sure 7 year Olds may have difficulty saying the Oath and Law Perfect every time. But I suspect by the Time the say it several years they will Know It and Remember it. One of the biggest Problem in Cub Scouting is changing Leadership every time you turn around. Yes I did it also..I transitioned with Boys in my Tiger Den to Wolf..Leaving No Tiger Cub Den Leaders. Next Problem is not allowing the Boys to Participate in Activities they want...Boys quit because scouting is not fun for them anymore. Telling a Boy, who may be part of a Climbing Club already, they can't climb more than 6 feet off the ground will cause them to drop out. Or the Boy Who Plays Local Pee Wee Football already they can't receive a Football Badge because they are not playing "Flag Football" instead causes problems. BSA is "Regulating" itself into trouble

I made our Flag when I was Tiger Den Leader. The Cub Scouts signed a Banner with their first names to hang from the Flag. I did the Embroidery on the Strips myself and Sewed it all together.

Yep seen it snow, rain, hail and be hot all in one day, A Good sleeping bag is a must,My Last Trek our packs weighed in near 80 Lbs, one came in at 98... But we carried Hot Sauce, Ketchup, BBQ Sauce, Salt, Pepper, Sugar and a lot of Extra Food...We had Steaks first 3 Nights because we Froze them and Carried Dry Ice. Our Ranger Susie Dobbs freaked out but after 3 Days with Us she knew We could handle it. That Trek was all experienced Philmonters. We Slept in Hammocks no Tents, No Tetrox on Pans. -
Summer Camp - In Council or Out?
jpstodwftexas replied to RandyPrice's topic in Open Discussion - Program
For 15 YEARS We had no choice. In the 1980's we had two camps. Ran Summer Camps at Both, 1 week of staff and 2 weeks of Campers...Horizons Wilderness was 1150 acres with 60 acre lake. Horizons was our Aquatics/Wilderness Camp. Scouts cooked each meal by fire in Camp. Earned Aquatic Merit Badges. Camp Perkins was Shooting Sports as it had Archery and Rifle Ranges. Offered different merit badges than what was offered at Horizons. But in 2002, Northwest Texas Council officials sold the property to developers for $1.1 million. Leaving us with Camp Perkins only a Mere 60 acre camp in the Red River Basin. 2012 was the first time in 15 years our Council had run a Summer Camp. Camp Perkins has not been developed at all in the way of COPE Courses, Climbing walls, Zip Lines, Bike Trails.. Not a Thing. Council was gonna sell the Camp but the family was smart in their trust. Land will revert back to family if not operated by Local Council. So Now we are faced with few Troops wanting to spend summer camp at a bare roots hardly no program and No Out Of Council troops wanting to attend our Camp. -
How Many Boys do you Have Total in your Troop? How Many Will have the required Merit Badges By then? Sounds like Your trying to Limit the Group...Sounds like You may leave out plenty of Scouts in your Troop..>Start Excluding to many people from Treks and You may Find your troop dying...It is Boy Scouts not training for Special Forces.

So Does Swimming in Nonshark infested Water count? I mean after all swimming for your life is different from just swimming. What about swimming in a Texas Pond barely Bigger than a Pool does that count? Luckily when I was scouting we had a Camp still with a Small private lake.. On staff We did mile swim Every week..at Camp Perkins after doing it one time in the Pool..I only did it once never again.. I technically Earned Mile Swim 15 times...Only wore 1 Badge tho

Milk and Cookies at Den/pack meetings?
jpstodwftexas replied to moosetracker's topic in Open Discussion - Program
Are you saying we are getting Fat because we served Healthy Snacks? Well we served Carrots, Apple Slices, Grapes, Celery Sticks..yikes even Fresh Broccoli pieces ...Great Now we have a reason to save money on wasted healthy snacks and get the Cheaper Ding Dongs and Twinkies. Time out of Den Meetings, You mean we should not have served the Snacks as we were leaving we should have been doing during the Meeting..My Cub Scout Leader's Handbook never told me that..Man I never knew that after retiring the Flags and saying the Closing..That ByTake a few minutes to say good Night and letting the Cub Scouts grab a few Snacks on the way out the Door was wrong. I guess we were wrong for for enjoying Cub Scouts..Refreshment in My Scouting Experience has always been at the End of The Meetings, Never During... My Second Year as Den Leader the Parents had started Hosting meetings in their Homes..Since there was no Fence around the Scout Hut and they wanted the Boys to be able to run around outside besides in the street. The Boys were actually losing Weight because they were more active..We went to the Park several times a Month..We went to Gyms, we went to the Pool..We Went fishing..So no My Boys were not Couch Potato Junk Food Junkie My Den Meetings usually Lasted 2 Hours...and even the parents still wanted to hang around..I have even been asked to come back to run my Old Den because the Scouts miss our meetings and my Style. I had 5 Tigers My First Year..I Had 5 returned wolves when I left. This year as Bears only 1 returned to Den, 2 transferred and sadly 2 Quit. Seems Now they don't like scouting as much when it is Rushed, and No Fun and Fellowship. They Consolidated dens for the Bears because the Pack has 6 Bears. Between Cub Master, assistant Cub Master and Myself Leaving, pack seems to be in trouble. From almost 60 Active Cub Scouts down to about 22 Active..Something went Wrong I will say. I admit we did splurge and get Cup Cakes when Boys in the Den had a Birthday.. Something Tells Me I was Respected by My Cub Scouts and Their Families, when They run Up and Give you a Hug, when I attend events to take pictures, and their parents shake your Hand. -
Basementdweller commented Today, 06:29 AM I don't like a reward system for anything.Your unit must be flush in cash. We could never afford to award $2k a year to the boys for any reason. Well that is the Advantage of Having rarely more than 12 Scouts at a Time in the Troop.. Yea we had some Money...At any Given time we had an Average of $15,000 on the Books. We Had Hamburger Suppers 4 times a Year..average meals sold was 1200 at $5 per plate..I remember one Hamburger dinner we sold 7500 Dinners. To this day people here remember the Hamburger Dinners. You Mention Troop six and they first thing they say is "I remember the Hamburger Suppers yall had." We never sold any Popcorn.. We Bought a Lot and Built a New Scout Hut...which was also used by the Church as a Senior Citizen Center. Could the Troop have just paid for everything yes it could have...but we prefer having Earned fees by earning it through the Honor Scout System and even working for $2.50 an Hour at a Scoutmaster's house Mowing his lawn. Much better since of Pride. Sadly even the Church Closed so the Troop is No longer around.

How to scout a new troop ?
jpstodwftexas replied to King Ding Dong's topic in Open Discussion - Program
Basementdweller commented #10.1 Today, 06:19 AM So that makes you mid 40's and no mention of your son. Do you have a scout? No I never Married.. Never Had Kids...Having Prostate removed next month. so unless I can get a woman pregnant between now and the 6th of November I never will have kids..unless a Miracle happens. I admit I was one of those silly stupid boys who was raised to respect women. My Mom Was a single Mom because my Dad died when we were young, not because he ran off. Kept Saying there was time for a Family later...I supported my Mother till she Died, never had a great job..so never could find a Girlfriend who wanted to get Married and have kids and be poor. My last Girlfriend did have a 7 Year old and that is what got me back into scouting..Raising another Person's child was an Issue between us..Seems I was to old Fashioned and to poor for her. -
Lets see... Good Logic...Not allow Girls who want to join Order of the Arrow.. Create A New Group doing Exactly What OA does Now so Girls can Join...Boys would rather be Joining New Group where the Girls are Active..OA continues to Die...Order of The Arrow membership Continues to die... Order of the Arrow is More than just Native American Dancing..It is also about Service to the Council..Camp Stewardship...Community Service..Conservation Projects. It is about Friendship and Fellowship. As for a Monopoly on Native American Culture in Scouting...What Other Official scouting Program is there? What other "Honor Society of Boy scouts of America" is there? Boy Scouts of America needs to stop treating their own Divisions as "RED HEADED STEP CHILDREN" And Yes the Girls do make the Pow Wow Circuits already. They sell Regalia at Native American Pow Wows....

Hummmm when I was a Scouter...We had Refreshments...I was a cub scouter in the early 70's we had refreshments...When I was a boy scouter in the Late 70's early 80's we had refreshments..When I was a Den Leader 2011-2012 I provided Refreshments for My Den..Dens would rotate Refreshments at Pack Meetings. We also decorated Cup cakes..Had picnics at Park. But Hey it is your Pack yall run it your way. -
