  1. I use Kudu's method of distance between patrols so we don't have a centralized KP station. Every patrol does their own thing from food prep through cooking to clean-up. Adults are on their own. Currently my ASM has dietary concerns that she deals with on her own and I have gone back to minimalist cup/spoon cooking or when I'm feeling venturous, use the individual mess kit cooking process. Everything done on the fire but use a backpack stove as backup for bad weather. I use full strength vinegar for sanitization along with heat from the fire. For example I rinse out the cast iron fry pan or Dutch oven, then heat to sanitize and then oil. Metal mess kit gets washed with soap/water, rinsed with vinegar, and hung over the fire to heat and dry. Some of the boys have watched me do this and many have gotten away from the plastic ware that is difficult to sanitize and clean. Stosh
  2. Somehow I don't have any editor/auto-correct features on my PC. For this reason I can double capitalize things like SM in the post and in the subject line of a new post. I do notice that the auto-correct on my "smart" phone is a real pain in the butt. It is more of a hinderance than a help.
  3. He's getting HTML features greyed out. I'm not getting anything so he's ahead of me on that count. I have no editing capability. I did do a screen print to show what my screen showed, but that would appear in the posting box but not upload to the forum. All I have is a "Post" button and "More "More Reply Options" buttons. That MRO button only gives a way to show 3 features (enable emoticons, enable signature and follow topic) and attach files. That's it, nothing related to the editor anywhere. "Help" suggests to select the basic or advanced editor in one's account settings. I've looked all over in those settings and find nothing there as well. The "Help" doesn't say anything specific about the settings, just that it's supposed to be there. A spell-checker feature would have been nice too. I have been working with computers since the days of key punch cards. I'm not a newbie at this, but this software is not at all intuitive in many respects.
  4. The boys always pay up front during the meeting prior to the outing. If you don't pay, you don't go. If you don't go, you don't get reimbursed, the money was spent on the food you aren't going to eat. Our GrubMasters are not expected to subsidize the patrol and then have to beg to get reimbursed. If the GM doesn't have the money, he doesn't need to shop.
  5. In my troop the PL's sign off for their patrol members. It is part of their responsibility of taking care of their boys. If one thinks the boys would be more lax about it than adults would. I have not found that to be the case in the vast majority of PL's. Occasionally a PL will seek advice of the SPL or SM if he feels the need to. When they first start out as PL this happens a bit more frequently. In the troops that I have been SM, this has always been the policy, boy-led, patrol-method. By the way, a BOR cannot "retest" a boy who has had his requirements signed off, but that doesn't mean the SM can't retest and evaluate during the SMC. I review heavily with the boys to make sure they are prepped for the BOR. Generally I don't run into many problems with this.
  6. I give up, Basic editor only. No little arrow, no formatting, just a place to type. HELP says there's a toggle switch in one's settings that can flip between basic and rich text formatting editors. Well there's no toggle switch in there either. Tried to do a screenprint, but even after loading into the "reply" it wouldn't post. When I go into editor it asks if I want the "full editor". It has enable emoticons, signature and follow topic buttons on top and the ability to attach a file on the bottom. That's it but it was more than just the first screen. Stosh
  7. Okay, great the moderators have html codes, but I don't think the rank and file does. I don't see any extra menus listed anywhere. I'm going on old-fart memory here, but I think the first day or so of the new forum we did have that option. Also, the auto-save feature doesn't work as well as the old. When you lose a post for whatever reason, you loose a large portion of it. The old software did really well saving posts and then retrieving them when something goes hay-wire.
  8. It was kinda nice to finally have my login name and screen name as two different entities. Stosh
  9. I don't allow this. Every time I have approved it, I have regretted it. Stosh By the way, even if it is explicitly stated that the younger sibling must stay with the parent, it never works out that way. They ALWAYS run off and become a problem. Stosh
  10. Somehow I get the impression that the SM isn't really all that interested in stepping down now that the glitch at work resolved itself. It's probably a good idea to clarify the reality of the situation. If he's stepping down, make it effective immediately. If not, have the COR give you a call when he does. Then do your best in the role you have on your shirt sleeve. If others are wondering what you're wondering, direct them to the COR for further clarification. There's nothing you can really do until the change has been made. Stosh
  11. Warning! Warning! Will Robinson. I have multiple commputers, I have just one account, but I don't go by my account name in the posts. I hope this doesn't get me in trouble with the Admins. Stosh (a.k.a. jblake47)
  12. I kinda thought this is what was supposed to be taking place with the training in ordering food (menu preparation) for the weekend for advancement. My boys count out the number of slices in a loaf of bread before they buy. The peanut butter jar is always the smallest one they can find, same for everything else. They are only feeding their patrol and they know how many are showing up for the event and adjust accordingly. At summer camp they carefully kept their leftovers and told the commissary they would not be needing any food for a meal beause they had plenty to eat from getting too much in the first place. They would carefully hoard certain extras to make a really nice meal every couple of days. They have the system down pretty good. Leftovers are pretty minimal at the end of any event. Stosh
  13. Kinda makes one wonder if the adult cooking crew is running the program and not the boys. Stosh
  14. I go back and forth with the expdition hat and the campaign hat. Just depends on my mood for the day. Both have wide brims all the way around. Protect nose, eyes, ears and neck. The expedition hat has more history. Branded Philmont Y2K and 100th Centennial Jamboree. Stosh
  15. Sounds like an arduous journey. Good to take a pass on it for novice canoeists. NEVER plan a trip up-river, the boys will hate you forever. Long portage? In the BWCA I once had a 3 mile portage. Needless to say, the trip was a loop so I didn't need to go back over it on the way home. Find two access points with no locks between. Dump water craft on upper landing. Shuttle a vehicle down to the lower landing. Canoe down, shuttle back to vehicles and pick up at lower landing. The only "trip" with no shuttling would be a loop around a moderate sized lake, staying close to shore with newbies. Shuttling is a way of life for a canoeist. Stosh
  16. In this case I would have no problem with my son the Webelos checking out a different program. Sounds like SM's family program rather than a scouting program. This is the exact problem I inherited when I took over my previous troop. SM dad was stepping down and I took over. I was able to straighten the boy out with a bit of passive cooperation from dad and the boy turned out great and Eagled with no objection whatsoever from me. However, after I was asked to leave, it reverted back to a different dad that had 3 boys in the program and the troop struggles once again with membership. When I was SM the troop grew from 5 to 26, and now it's back down to 7-8 boys last time I checked. It's unbelievable what one boy can do to ruin a troop's program. Stosh
  17. I have been camping for 60+ years now and I have never heard of anyone defining camping as just tenting. With the danger associated with it I can see where rock climbing, water craft and shooting sports can be a bit far afield from pure camping. But hiking, fire building, cooking, digging latrine, etc. all are necessary for an extended stay in the campsite. Hiking, biking, fishing, swimming and other activities related to outside the boundaries of the campsite can also be defined under the definition of camping. And if one doesn't think that "running around in the woods" isn't dangerous, they haven't had an encounter with Mr. Poison Ivy. Sometimes one has to conclude that strict interpretation of legalses is pretty much a bummer when it comes to taking young boys out into the woods for some fun. I think I would be a bit more concerned about it if the boys weren't properly trained and had some instruction in first aid. As long as one stays within the limits of the boys' training, I can then relax. Stosh

    Two DE's?

Two DE' s is one too many..... But then again, there are times when one DE is one too many....... Stosh
  19. I have a SMC with every new scout coming into the troop and spend at least 30 minutes going through leadership expectations. Technically they haven't registered yet so they aren't boy-led yet. They get the whole run down on respect, bullying, etc. quietly from me. Because of this I have very little problems with "brat" scouts and if I do, the situation is dealt with by other scouts policing themselves. In all my years as a SM, I have used "Sign's Up" once. Normally I just wait for the boys to calm down when I stand to address them. Sign's up means, "I want to interrupt you interrupting me." Where's the lesson in respect in that? The one time I used it the boys were being a bit inattentive to an adult addressing the group at the PL's request. Of course I got instant quiet, and to this day, never had to even think about doing it again. All my boys refer to each other as Mr. __________. That tradition is so strong that even after my boys turn 18 and I tell them they can now refer to me by my first name, no one ever does. As long as they refer to me as Mr. _________, I return the respect by continuing to address them with the Mr. title as well Every boy knows that bullying is automatic grounds for removal of troop membership. I am always surprised by the lack of problems I have in my troops. Most of my problems originate out of the parents who don't understand how boy-led, patrol-method works and definitely have no idea of what Servant Leadership is all about. I have always known that if one treats a young person as an adult they will act more like one. One can either teach maturity, or wait around to see if someday it magically appears out of nowhere. Oh, by the way, when I was a Webelos leader, I ran the den the same way. 6 boys started, 6 boys Eagled 9 years later, and they still refer to me as Mr. ______. Stosh

  21. How in the world are you going to jump up and down, scream and yell at the Packers when you have to hold on to a plate???? Stosh
  22. Instead of discrediting the poster, why not stick with the thread. SSF said he was an Eagle, I assume that was Eagle Scout rather than coach of a sports team with an eagle mascot. [h=1]“Our youth now love luxury. They have bad manners, contempt for authority; they show disrespect for their elders and love chatter in place of exercise; they no longer rise when elders enter the room; they contradict their parents, chatter before company; gobble up their food and tyrannize their teachers.†- Socrates (470/469-399 B.C.)[/h] So the debate has been ongoing for about 2500 years now. Hows it working out for you? Stosh
