  1. @ What is non-biodegradable paper? @@SpEdScouter As far as digging one's own? Haven't done one this summer yet.... The best? I usually shy away from the possibility of ever finding the "best" in the places I camp. Just this past weekend, I thought it was really neat to have electricity in the site, but I wasn't there just to camp, it was my night's accommodations on a road trip with daughter and granddaughter.
  2. Policy change is policy change regardless of the timing. Policy change is a policy change. What others do in reaction to that is going to take time, but eventually it will happen. BSA made it's decision, when it takes affect is totally irrelevant. Now everyone else has to make their decision. BSA can't make any blanket statements on when others are going to be making their decisions. BSA is a done deal. Everyone else is still a crap-shoot. The really unfortunate thing is BSA not only polarized it's own membership, it is seemingly successful in causing polarizing problems for other organizations as well. That really doesn't bode well for the future of BSA. If one thought the BSA the evil twin of bigotry, they are going to be the Great White shark of the politically correct puddle before they are done.
  3. If I were recruiting this month, I would find it very difficult to make any statement regarding what the future will hold for prospective scouts. Will your unit allow gay leaders? I dunno. Will your unit cease to exist in 2 months? I dunno. I've been hearing a lot of news reports lately. Is BSA falling apart? I dunno. It's gonna be very difficult hand Q & A sheets to everyone when the only A on the paper is "I dunno."
  4. Transparency? Like one couldn't see this coming from miles away after the decision 2 years ago? The rose colored glasses of the "local option" policy will disappear in a puff of smoke as well. I'm just saying this so that one isn't surprised when it happens.
  5. I guess I'm the only one that thinks that a policy allowing gay leaders doesn't hurt the boys in the program, but CO's who object to this policy and drop the program does hurt the boys. I guess the approach of what I do doesn't affect anyone, but what others do does? I can understand Irving's myopic point of view. Is this yet another new twist to Political Correctness that I missed the memo on?
  6. Not just one of the Lutheran "spin off" groups are in protest, they ALL are. ELCA as been deemed non-Lutheran in their doctrine by all other Lutheran bodies because of their stand on various sexual issues in their teachings. In the world of "Lutheranism" only the ELCA think they are Lutheran.
  7. This issue will be addressed by the court of public opinion prosecuted by those whose political agenda is motivated by political correctness. The Catholic diocese is the bad guy in this sutation as the bigoted, narrow-minded one who BSA had to reluctantly, but only temporarily, try and sate with it's vaguely worded new world order for the program.
  8. Political Correctness is the un-legislated, un-written law of the land. If one does not comply they are judged in the court of public opinion of the minority and demonized. Legilslative law and the US Constitution have been usurped by this process. If we are a people governed by law, which law is it that takes precident?
  9. "Two-deep leadership on all outings is required. A minimum of two registered adult leaders, or one registered leader and a participating Scout’s parent or another adult, are required for all trips and outings. One of these adults must be 21 years of age or older" No where does it say this other adult must be YPT trained or not on the ineligible list. Doesn't even say they have to be a parent. The ineligible list is only some legal tool to reduce the litigation possibility that may someday occur. Thus declaring innocent people ineligible as an over-precaution is in National's opinion very much "scout-like" in respect to good citizenship.
  10. “The Moving Finger writes; and, having writ, Moves on: nor all thy Piety nor Wit Shall lure it back to cancel half a Line, Nor all thy Tears wash out a Word of it.â€â€• Omar Khayyám This is the BSA's chance to start rebuilding trust with its conservative COs. After one has killed the horse, it's gonna be a tough sell riding it back to town. Welcome to the world of Pandora. There might be a bit of doom-and-gloom out there from the conservatives, but there is a ton of pie-in-the-sky from the liberals. With 70% of the CO's from religious organizations, things don't look at all rosy for BSA any time soon. All of this to satisfy some politically correct cause that affects only 4% of the population, a noisy 4%, but still only 4%. We are no longer a country directed by laws enacted by the majority of the populace, we are a country directed by the intolerant minority. That's tyrany, always has been, always will be.
  11. A 30 minute walk is best summed up as a mile and a half. That's 3 miles roundtrip. That's an improvement? Must have been really bad in the past.
  12. Reading the attached link above, the inelibible files only restrict application membership into the Scouting organization, it says nothing about restricting parents from attending any and all scout activities. And no, they do not need YPT to attend any and all events with their child, only registered scouters are required to have YPT. It is also interesting to note that they go to great lenghs to self-justify banning innocent people from membership.
  13. Intolerance is always measured in what other people do, not what I do. -- Anonymous Hypocrite. What I find objectionable in other people is never a trait I reserve for myself. -- U. Gottabe Kidding What's good enough for the Goose is good enough for the Gander is Politically Incorrect as viewed from my side of the fence. -- I. C. Nothing I wonder if it's time we invent a new word like Christophobic for today's culture?
  14. My boys seem to fly by the seat of their pants on the monthly activities, but are quite capable to planning up to a year out. This process will eventually tradition into a more serious annual planning, but being new with young scouts there is no "last year" to compare to and the future is "wide open" to whatever they wish to do. This worked on advancement 2 weeks ago during the "meeting" time, last week they went to the archery club and did that for an hour, and this week they went kayaking. They are trying out new things to see what might be fun for a more intense activity around these types of activities. Another troop has been toying with the idea of doing a week long "summer camp alternative" on a 5 day float with our boys. They need more discussion to decide whether or not to take them up on it.
  15. Age is irrelevant for this scout. He can take as long as he wants to get his Eagle. The 18 year old requirement of drop dead date does not apply. I had a scout (34 years old) who was in my troop and all he needed was 2 MB's and his project. He was well liked by the boys and I was working with him on getting his requirements filled. It was just going to take time for this scout. If adults are standing in is way keeping him from advancing thinking this is going to go away when he is 18 is sorely mistaken. He needs an advocate NOW!
  16. I thought the same thing when I read this, but then remembered all the "experts" at summer camp that crank out MB's in their MB Mill programs. I have yet to meet a bugling MB counselor who really knows what he/she's doing. Playing the bugle is not the purpose of the bugle, what it is used for is quite a different thing. To the Colors and Taps maybe Reveille might get played, but To the Colors is not played as the flag goes up and Reveille really doesn't get anyone up as it's supposed to. The bugler can play all day long and impress everyone with his skill, but if no one knows what the calls mean, his efforts are totally useless.
  17. I'm more in favor of an international flavor such as Canadian blend. .Almost couldn't send this message, couldn't find the prost button.
  18. Spun, I seriously believe that even Fr. Sevin would not approve of the track BSA is taking today as appropriate for scouts 100 years ago. I would like to see evidence of Fr. Sevin's comments regarding this before I make further judgment.
  19. Like I said, I have moderated forums before, been there, done that, regretted it too. It's a good lesson to learn There's another lesson one could learn that I have in my repertoire as well. (It's displayed in the previous sentence as well.) My sympathies to you and to the family of your friend.
  20. Well, that's one opinion, I'm sure others have theirs as well.
  21. They always leave a paper trail and in this case they are all greenbacks.
  22. I used to be a Beaver, a good old Beaver too. Welcome!
  23. But is that a two-way street? Or just some sort of one-way blind alley? PCism is never a two-way street, either you get into lock-step or you are vilified.
