Unless one is going to challenge me to my face, they are wasting their words. Their free speech is worth every penny of it.
  2. If he passed, one might need to check to see if the trailer needs to go through probate.....
  3. Whoever's SSN and address is on the registration is who owns the trailer. If the former SM doesn't want to give it up, it's his to decide what to do with it. Now it begins to dawn on someone that registering it in a person's name means ... well, they own it, not the scouts or the CO.
  4. And what about software, hardware and silverware? and dishware? and even the patrol cookware?

As a retired professional scouter, he/she should know the rules and be able to research the source of his concern before speaking to the CC (which he didn't do!). Obviously without documentation one can always assume he/she does NOT know everything there is to know about scouting. Thus the political strutting going on can easily be perceived as bullying the CM. And yes, the CC's servant leadership role is to support his people and take care of his people, i.e. the CM who in turn has a servant leadership responsibility to take care of his DL's and staff. If the person as strayed from the policy, a gentle reminder with a kind word will most often straighten things out. At least that's been my experience.
  6. Yet that doesn't take into consideration the handful of units out there that are chartered by for-profit businesses. In the long run, I don't think the issue of sales tax is as big an issue than is the income tax of money brought into an organization that may be jeopardizing their not-for-profit status of individual self gain under the cloak of charitable contributions to an organization, not any specific individual within that organization.

If one has something to say, say it. If not, remember, Silence is Golden. An individual's free speech is protected and I will defend it whether I agree with it or not. Anonymous free speech is not protected by the Constitution.

From the original post, we can't even determine if there really is a "someone" out there. "Somebody" never came forward in a open debate to air the issue. They preferred the behind the scenes hidden approach like an ambush kind of thing. Maybe it's the clandestine secretive nature of the approach that makes it appear to be a kind of bullying. Maybe it's just the coward's way of avoiding having to defend one's beliefs. We don't know. If "someone" had a beef about the use of a sword in a Cub Scout ceremony, at least have the honesty of dealing with it in person and not behind everyone's back using a third party to defend "somebody's" position. The whole idea behind this PC movement is this unknown "somebody" is going to be offended. Well, when "somebody" speaks up, I'll listen, until then it's just background noise "somebody's" making in my opinion. Until I know who "somebody" is, their credibility means nothing.
  9. I think the case could be made for easing the requirements and/or Eagle Mill operations. Statistics can mean just about anything anyone wants them to be. After all if we high school graduated only 6% of the kindergarten kids entering school today we would be advocating a lot differently than just praising the handful that made it through. Of course if one is only measuring one's education, a PhD doesn't take into account character or ethical decision making abilities either. Scouting is a complete package and it's not the Eagle that completes it.

@@DuctTape, I think the term intolerance fits better than bullying. We used to be a nation of tolerant people, it's the whole basis for the once "melting pot" of the world. We've long since lost that with our zero-tolerant society. We aren't talking intolerant, we're talking zero-tolerant as taught in our schools and demanded by our societal changes. In all honesty I would rather deal with a bully than someone who's zero-tolerant because a bully might be motivated by self-gratification or pride, but a zero-tolerant person needs a certain amount of anger and hatred to maintain their absolute stance of disdain. I grew up in a world of "live and let live", it was the basis of true freedom for all, but it is obvious to all that's not the world I live in now.
  11. We have heard the concerns about boys and their parents joining scouts just for the Eagle. It's all about the Eagle, All the press is about the Eagle. And yet the vast majority of boys being reached with quality leadership training, citizenship emphasis, moral decisions, self-respect and confidence are being sidelined. It's not Eagle bashing to say the BSA's stance of "It's all about the Eagle" is interfering with the message that there are a huge number of quality scouts out there that will never get their picture in the paper and a fancy party. I think the memorial of the unknown scout wasn't just for Eagles for a very good reason. Scouting isn't just all about the Eagle.
  12. Thanks, Hedgehog. Your non-binding we're-not-going-to-sue-you answers are very helpful.

Oh, by the way, swords do not have a sharp edge. They only have a point to worry about. A saber has a sharpened edge. They are also a bit more curved to increase the slicing ability of the edge.

Or...... You have a concern about the sword ceremony? I'll put you on the agenda for next month's committee meeting. You can express your concerns there.
  15. I think he means that unless the people on the internet are giving away the music, one has to pay for it. At first with the pronouns I thought that one could download music as long as the person doing the downloading gives it away free. No, only if the music on the internet is free can one download it without paying for it.
  16. There is nothing wrong with a scout earning a wage of value for doing work. Charity is not based on work, but on need and value is given with no expectation of work or earning involved. The problem lies in the lessons being taught that one "earns" their way in scouting by entitlement of work involved. I can stand at a Red Kettle for 8 hours and get $1 in the kettle and my "Good Turn" is just as valuable as getting $1,000 in the kettle. What do I expect in return? Up here in the Northland, cold hands and feet seem to be at the top the list. My boys are taught that they sell popcorn so everyone gets to go to camp. Why much they personally raise is irrelevant. It's not their money, ISA's leave the impression that it is.
  17. Except for # MB's, # POR, # Service hours, and a project how does an Eagle differ from the First Class scout? Then ask oneself how much of an impact do MB's, POR's, Service hours and a project really make?

At my age, I've played the political referee far too many times to even count. Here's a couple of observations. First of all, if one thinks they can somehow end up with a smile on everyone's face, think again. I've never seen that happen. At best, like little children, a begrudging handshake by both parties is the best one can hope for. People who start out on one end of the spectrum seldom think anything less than their ultimatum is a loss. Very rarely do any of the combatants see any collateral damage done to the boys. In this case, the people who are challenging the practice need to step forward and be recognized, hiding behind the CM isn't an honorable option and last time I checked, facing one's accusers is still an acceptable option in a contested situation. If one is not going to stand up and take responsibility for the challenge, then one's cause isn't that important. For some people consensus is nothing more than a compromise by which both sides have to admit defeat. In our competitive society, that's never an option. A tie is never a win. So, now that all the rules of the game are known, find your favorite picket sign and head for the courthouse, bring a lawyer.

How does one dub someone with a light saber without cutting their arms off?
  20. By the way a few years back, those boys who got AOL and certain pins similar to the adventures of the new program, were able with SM's permission to cross-over into Boy Scouts at the TF rank so they didn't need to sit through it twice. I haven't seen that practice brought back in the new adventure program.
  21. Yep, and the Webelos boys can wait and do it with the non-Cub boys when the time comes. They miss out on AOL, but they don't have to be bored with having to sit through a month or two of redundant material.
  22. We have two units in our council that are for profit CO's that I know of. Also if one looks closely at the process, this originally started off in another thread as the ISA issue. If a for profit CO gives money to "their scouts" as a charitable donation, the problem lies in that scout unit is not a charitable entity. They are owned by a for-profit CO. If a not-for-profit gives money to "their scouts" it is a charitable donation, but not if it is given to an individual. Churches pay their clergy and staff, Red Cross does as well,... Well come to think of it they all do and they issue a W-2 at the end of the year so that person can file their income tax. Driving 56 mph in a 55 zone is still speeding.
