Judging by the President's tweets from today, he might not be in a good mood when he gets to the Jamboree: https://twitter.com/realDonaldTrump -
President Trump to visit 2017 Jamboree
hiker67 replied to RememberSchiff's topic in Issues & Politics
Local media reports indicate the President will speak around 6 pm; the governor of West Virginia will also be there and will probably speak as well. It looks like circumstances are being arranged to keep the President's speaking time to a minimum. If there is booing, the President won't hear it. They can use a previously recorded track of the crowd cheering at another event and play the track back while the President is on the stage. -

That is obviously true but, on the other hand, POWs aren't just anyone. That behavior doesn't seem Scout-like. -

Lots of kids play sports and have summer jobs (if not year-round jobs), but the military school is uncommon. -

I was replying to the poster that claimed that Trump would have been a good Scout solely because he went to a military school. The draft deferments don't have anything to do with Scouting, but they don't fit in with someone that would subscribe to the values taught at a military school. I also mentioned that Trump also berated Senator John McCain for being a prisoner of war. https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/video/2015/jul/19/donald-trump-john-mccain-not-a-war-hero-video I would think that a Scout wouldn't have such an attitude as Trump's or, if he did, he wouldn't express it publicly for political purposes. -

For most people, myself included, yes. But there are those that scrutinize every politician's lapel for a US flag pin.

The President is commander of the military but is not part of the military. The framers of the Constitution placed the military under civilian control in order to avoid the problems faced in the European empires. Only Congress can fund the military and only Congress can declare war. The DOD has a document on the subject of civilian control at: http://archive.defense.gov/news/newsarticle.aspx?id=45870 The President doesn't qualify for military benefits, unless he/she was in the military previously. Military personnel must salute the President, but the President is not required to return the salutes. Similarly, the secretaries of defense and the military branches are also civilians; in fact, military experience is not required for any of those positions. I believe Eisenhower placed his hand over his heart as other presidents did.

Ms. Trump does not have her hand over her heart. Barack Obama was taken to task when he did the same at another event. Protocol allows for military personnel and veterans to hand salute the flag. Civilians, including the President, should place their hands over their hearts, unless they are in uniform for other reasons. The Obamas had their hands over their hearts during the inaugurations. (I've read that Eisenhower never saluted when he was President.)

Scouting ties in the Trump Administration

The presence of Eagle Scouts in the administration is positive, but the question is whether or not the President will actually value and consider their advice. Some Presidents seek input from others and factor it into their decision making -- others do not. The latter tend to seek individuals who are highly qualified in carrying out Presidential directives, rather than being advisers. I now think that the chances of the new President appearing at the Jamboree may be low. In the Bryan on Scouting blog post on Rex Tillerson's appointment, no mention of the US presidency or Trump was made: http://blog.scoutingmagazine.org/2016/12/13/distinguished-eagle-scout-rex-tillerson-nominated-as-secretary-of-state/ -

The naming of the honorary president is probably automatic -- it has happened for every US President since Taft. I assume the President, as well as past and present BSA national presidents, board members and major donors are invited to the Jamboree as a routine. There may be a good chance that Trump attends the Jamboree this year, as the G20 summit will occur weeks earlier. -

Trump followed up on the military school with five draft deferments and, later, berating John McCain for being captured in Vietnam. -

I think they were laughing because, while Trump may want to associate with people in Scouting, his controversial background tends to run against the principles of Scouting. -

Archdiocese of St Louis Concerned about values of GSUSA and BSA

Perhaps the new-found concern of the archdiocese for children is a diversion from other things: Archdiocese of St. Louis ordered to produce 20 years of documents on sexual abuse (March 11, 2015)- 78 replies

Leaders Without Kids In The Troop
hiker67 replied to pargolf44067's topic in Open Discussion - Program
I believe there was a thread here a few years back about a troop that had a strict policy against leaders without children in the troop. Scouts could not stay on when they turned 18. Very sad. -
"Both of the council’s northern Wisconsin camps, LeFeber Northwoods Camps near Laona and Robert S. Lyle Scout Reservation near Elcho, are owned by trusts but used exclusively by Three Harbors Council. The Board’s decision to end camping programs does not include any recommendation on ownership of the properties."
