My nephews went to JNW two years in a row it was so good. Next year they are doing Pigott. They search long and hard every year, so I would feel good about either of these. Good luck.

I don't want to sound like an "I told you so" post, and my heart is broken when I think of this boy. But I can count many things that were not done correctly, and that led up to him being missing. I am not saying for any reason other than to hopefully make us all the more aware how important certain safety rules established by the BSA are followed. I know the adult (parent) here must already be blaming himself. 1. Use the buddy system. If someone has to go back to the camp, he goes with a buddy. No exceptions, It doesn't matter how far away or how long he'll be away. 2. If lost, stay put. If a lost hiker stay in one place, he will be found. If they move they will be found, dead. 3. Carry a small emergency pack that includes an emergency blanket, water, first aid, on all hikes. Get in the habit. If just one of these rules were followed, he would be found alive most likely.

This may sound arrogant, but it is not my intention. I am ready to start my son in a Cub Scout pack. I will be very picky as to which pack gets our involvement. I have been out of scouting for a while, but back in the day was quite active. And I plan on being very active again. I am looking at this much like I would apply for a job. That is, I would interview the employer, much like they interview an employee. I want to find a pack that has a strong committee, active adults deeper than just the youth leaders, etc. I also want a pack with good communication. A website is a must. The pack is getting more than my boy, they are also getting a parent that wants to help and does not see Scouting as a baby-sitting organization. So far, I have narrowed it down to one pack that is starting their second year, and another that is just starting up. What other things should I be concerned with? (Is this too arrogant?)

My wife and I (girlfriend at the time) both earned our Pope Pious XII awards in 1979-1980 while officers in an Explorer Post. It was a great experience, and I hope to pass that on to today's scouts.

I am interested in becoming a counsleor for the Catholic religious emblems. I was just contacted by the chairman of the local Diocesan committee, and was informed that the next training was scheduled for March of 2005. Does that seem odd to anyone else but me?

So I jumped into this discussion halfway through, thought the Mom was just being a Mom and that maybe we needed to hear the other point of view. Then I went back to the beginning post and read it from the start. Get away from that SM while you can. Why doesn't anyone on the committee do something about it? It's great that he is a gung-ho scouter, but he can't change the rules of the game, when it's not his game. And he can't arbitrarily add a 13 point (assertive) to the Scout Law. The question that begs to be answered is "Why would he do this?" I was a SM and I wanted to see my scouts advance, those who earned it, of course. I would never think of not allowing a boy to make Life just because he was quiet and unassuming. Run as fast as you can to another troop. Just my humblem opinion.

Hi folks. I began in Scouting in the south suburbs of Chicago in 1978, when I met a girl whose brothers and dad were active in a local troop. I was 18 years old, so became an assistant scoutmaster. Soon, my girlfriend and I became involved in Explorers, and I became the Post president. Worked at summer camp as the Aquatic Director in 1980. Once I turned 21 the next year, I was asked to be a Scoutmaster for a new troop that was just being organized. After I married, we moved to Arizona, and that ended my scouting career until now. I can find almost no information on the Bronze Bighorn Award. I received it in 1979 or 1980 as an Explorer Scout. Anybody have a clue as to that history?
