  1. Certainly. A Catholic pharmacist. Dispensing birth control drugs.
  2. Well, that certainly explains Vitter.
  3. I can think of an instance where professional ethics might conflict with personal morals. Pharmacists. As a consumer, I expect the pharmacist to employ his professional ethics and set aside his personal morals when fulfilling my prescriptions if they are in conflict. Same goes for congressmen. If their constituents want a piece of legislation that goes against the morals of the legislator, ethics dictate he should vote for his constituents and put his personal morals aside. Too often, his personal interests push the values of his constituents aside.
  4. The original intent was for our representatives to be citizens like us, who take a bit of time off from their chosen profession to serve, temporarily. I would expect in this type of system, the representative would apply ethics that would be what is best for the people who elected him/her. Now however, they are professionals. Their primary incentive is to get re-elected. They are beholding to those who help them achieve that. That's not you or me, that's the party leaders, big cat donors and lobbyists. I would expect in this type of system, the representative would apply ethics that would be what is best for himself.
  5. Merlyn, got a cite for the provision that secures a traveling senator from arrest while performing his constitutional duties? You might be onto something. Several years ago I got stopped for speeding. The cop asked me if had a valid reason to speed. I relented that I was fresh out, then asked what where the valid reasons. He said, 1) a medical emergency 2) being late to a vote in the legislature. OGE, the Jefferson issue is that the FBI raided his official congressional office. It had members of both parties up in arms. When hunting big game, one must be wverrry wverry kwareful.
  6. Go to REI. They have a section on camping sanitation. They have WAG bags. Buy one. Take it home. Open it up. Take a test drive on one. See how it works. Get real acquainted with it. Keep it around for a few days. Learn it. Live It. Love it. No REI close? http://www.rei.com/product/662978
  7. On a recent mountain climb with young scouts, several were tossing rocks off a cliff. Being a climber myself and faced rocks being tossed down on me, I told them there could be people down there. They looked at me like I was speaking in tongues. Then decided it wasn't a good idea. Now, if the perp wasn't an Iraq vet and was an illegal alien, would your attitude that no good could come of pressing charges still stand? This dude is living in a level of hell I would never want to be in. He faces civil restitution that will last his entire life. He should. The dude he killed had a family. He now has a family he's responsible for helping out. Criminal charges? I don't think so.
  8. Only animals on top of Mt. Whitney are the two legged variety and they are very dirty creatures.
  9. Not so fast John. The good senator didn't have unprotected sex because he didn't have sex. And even if he did accomplish is accused goal, we don't know if he would have donned a jimmy hat. I agree, he would not have my support as my senator, but he would have lost my support long ago based on his voting record not his personal antics.
  10. I too am a bit perplexed at this new definition of diversity to mean "one view". I have a daughter who was a daisy scout. She begged to quit after her third year. It wasn't the lesbian agenda, it wasn't the lectures from Planned Parenthood. It wasn't the overtly sexual promiscuity of the staffers at camp. It was about the brownie leader being a complete ditz and not making it fun. My daughter has a one strike policy. Come to think of it, so does my wife. "I've said my piece and counted to three."
  11. I'm pulling a 180 here. After listening to both sides of the argument on talk radio today, I think Craig is doing the right thing fighting this. As a libertarian, I don't think the Senate should have any say on what this man did, aside from his ability to fulfill his role as a US Senator. The voters have the final say, and they will in 2008. They should drop the ethics investigation. Save those efforts for chasing down real scoundrels like that dude from Alaska. I really don't care if Craig is gay. I do think its knee slapping funny that he is so hypocritical and would never vote for him. But I think he should stay in the Senate if he wishes to. I'm also pulling a mia culpa on Vitter. What he did had no impact on his Senatorial duties, its between his wife and the voters to decide.
  12. Hmmmm. Signs a guilty plea and it just doesn't go away. DO OVER! Resigns from the Senate and criticism just doesn't go away. DO OVER! Next thing we'll see is he will want a DO OVER on his vote to go to war. And you thought Kerry was a flip flopper.
  13. Yeah, the threat of wilderness first aid requirement for Philmont was the incentive for us get it last year. Then they postponed it until 2008. I think wilderness first aid is more valuable at Northern Tiers than Philmont. Seems like you are always within a few hours of help at Philmont, but it could be much longer at NT, especially in Quetico or Bisset.
  14. Last week on a business trip, I hit the Air and Space at Dulles on my way out of town. WOW! Don't miss it. You don't get many chances to walk under a real space shuttle or the Enola Gay!
  15. Vicki, Men (especially Scouters) always check for an ample supply of TP before assuming the position. Be Prepared! Never have I asked my stall mate, "Sorry to interrupt chap, but could you spare a square?"
  16. You are so right OGE. The twin cities is the home of our favorite godless liberal here on this site as well. My point is that moral turpitude ordinances are more likely to come from a conservative legislature than a liberal one since legislating morality is a plank in the conservative platform. I also think the flatfoot prematurely pulled the trigger on the perp. He should have waited until Craig either entered his stall or overtly asked for company in his. Until then, no crime was committed, in my mind. That's why I'm astonished the distinguished gentleman from Idaho copped to a guilty plea.
  17. With all this hand wringing on why this cop was enforcing this particular law, one must see the irony that this dragnet caught a conservative lawmaker with a law written by a conservative lawmaker. Does anyone really think this moral turpitude ordinance was written by a liberal? Ok, I am making an assumption here, but I bet there are no such ordinances in San Fransisco.
  18. I'm an excellent driver. Dad lets me drive slow on the driveway every Saturday. 'Course the seats were originally brown leather now they're a pitiful red. Uh oh, fifteen minutes to Judge Wapner.
  19. Brent, What's your take on Vitter? Should he get a pass?
  20. This climbing season, Coleman sponsored an Everest expedition using Exponent gear. I think they made the summit. Pretty gutsy if you ask me. I made notice during our Philmont trek how Coleman gear stood up compared to other stuff. Invariably, the Coleman stuff, even Exponent line, failed or had some issue. I'd never put my life on the line with this stuff.
  21. Well, it seems the distinguished gentleman from Idaho is gonna take one for the team and resign. Shame really. Based on the evidence, I think he would have gotten off scott free in a trial. But he chose to stall and tap dance around. With this wave of moral house cleaning, I wonder if there are others who might be flushed out? Paging Senator Vitter...
  22. Anything with the label Coleman on it. We have a Coleman outlet store in town and they give us a 20% scout discount. So needless to say, when my wife is looking at shoes at the outlet stores, I find myself browsing the aisles of Coleman. I always find something that looks of high quality and utility and a great price. Universally, I am disappointed with it in the field.
  23. Those republicans who want Craig to resign sure didn't line up to see Vitter resign. I wonder if its all because the gov of Idaho is republican and will replace him with a republican and the gov of Louisiana is a dem and would replace Vitter with a dem. Who plays politics? EH?
