Something for Merlyn in his neck of the woods..

Do you feel the same if the United States gives in to any majority who believes they have been mistreated. -
I consider any faith that rejects what is commonly accepted scientific pricinples is fundamentalist. Mainstream Mormonism falls into that category.
-
The issue is religious fundamentalism. The two candidates who have raised their religion as a qualifier to being POTUS could also be considered to be members of fundamentalist sects. They have claimed that they will be guided by those beliefs. One would expect that those who are fundamentalists see things as black and white with not grey areas. And that those views are based on Biblical interpretations and not subject to debate or compromise. I also think that is a characteristic that would isolate and marginalize the POTUS especially if those Biblical views ran contrary to the will of the people. Personally, I don't care what religion a politician is. They can be Mormon, athiest, Catholic, Buddhist, or Scientologist. I begin to care when they want me to care, like Huckabee and Romney.

I've noticed that in every political debate or campaign speech, the candidates are facing west. Could be a correlation. Which way does Rush Limbaugh face?

My daddy always said, "Religious opinions are like rectums. Everybody's got one, you don't mind hearing your own, but you really don't like hearing someone elses."

Extraterrestrial Leave No Trace?

Pack, I just hope that when you scream GERNBLANSTEN from under that wet rag that it sounds more like GOLDWINGER. Now I have to put another layer of Reynolds on. Thanks! -
Your religion should only be important to yourself and no one else.

Extraterrestrial Leave No Trace?
GernBlansten replied to GernBlansten's topic in Camping & High Adventure
50 year rule? Yeah, I remember that. We took the scouts to a B17 bomber crash site in the woods behind my house. Crashed back in 1945. Its an protected site now, all the little pieces are historical artifacts now. 15 years ago, it was just wreckage and junk. I'm cool with that. But I ain't giving up the alien body parts I found even though they glow through the shoe box I keep them in on the shelf in the garage. -
Imagine there's no heaven It's easy if you try No hell below us Above us only sky Imagine all the people Living for today... Imagine there's no countries It isn't hard to do Nothing to kill or die for And no religion too Imagine all the people Living life in peace... You may say I'm a dreamer But I'm not the only one I hope someday you'll join us And the world will be as one Imagine no possessions I wonder if you can No need for greed or hunger A brotherhood of man Imagine all the people Sharing all the world... You may say I'm a dreamer But I'm not the only one I hope someday you'll join us And the world will live as one

Scientology has the word science in it, but it doesn't make it based on science.

Adams, the same one who signed into law the aliens and sedition act.

That's the stark difference between the Romney and JFK speeches. JFK: I believe in an America where the separation of church and state is absolute Romney: Freedom requires religion just as religion requires freedom.
-
Goldwinger, you are not too young to google the JFK speech and listen to it. It is one of his many great speeches. JFK faced the same skeptism that Romney faces about his religion. Here's a link to JFK's speech. http://www.beliefnet.com/story/40/story_4080_1.html "I believe in a President whose religious views are his own private affair, neither imposed by him upon the nation or imposed by the nation upon him as a condition to holding that office. Extraterrestrial Leave No Trace?
GernBlansten replied to GernBlansten's topic in Camping & High Adventure
Transmissions of Jerry Springer is not pollution, but a call for help. Those who do not agree should review the historical document "Galaxy Quest". -
This latest episode with Romney has had the good side effect of allowing us to review what JFK had said in his famous speech on religion and politics. JFK hit it right on the head. A candidates religion should be only important to himself. That there should be no religious test for candidacy. That's not what is happening today. We now have candidates who claim that they are defined only by their religion. That opens the door to for scrutiny of those beliefs. Americans want to know how a candidate makes decisions and what influences and how strong those influences will act on him/her. For example, Romney says he will not take direction from the Mormon Church. However, doesn't Mormon faith require allegiance to the prophet? If he doesn't, is that an indicator of the strength of his religious convictions? Those questions must be answered before I consider my vote for him.

Extraterrestrial Leave No Trace?
GernBlansten replied to GernBlansten's topic in Camping & High Adventure
You think aliens might not have followed LNT on our planet? The stunning lack of concrete evidence of an extraterrestrial visit indicates they did follow LNT. I do like changing ourselves to survive on their planet and it would follow LNT. We should start the gene mutation immediately and in 40 to 50 generations, we might have folk who could handle it. -
This forum has been filled with divisive, bad news lately. So I thought it would be good for some cleansing fun debate. Most of you know, I'm somewhat of a LNT evangelical. I was watching a science program on Mars travel. They went into the steps necessary to colonize Mars, one being terraforming the planet. You know, converting the planet's atmosphere to support our life. Got me to thinking, (Yeah I know that's dangerous). Would LNT apply? Would it be extreme hubris of mankind to go to another planet and start changing it to suit our needs?

If your target is the youth, adventure. If your target is the parents, then all the other stuff.
-
The commercial should be all about product differentiation. What can scouting provide that all other youth programs can't? ADVENTURE!!!
-
Wow is right. Scary. What a shame that these people could come in and destroy an established program like this and cause so much pain for everyone involved. How could a pair like this gain so much control? I guess with a detached CO, it could. Scares me. We have a detached CO, but a good committee. Victims: The scouts and scouters displaced to other units. The special needs scouts who stuck it out and are now left out in the cold. Not so much victims: The instigators (seems they had ulterior motives) The CO for letting this happen. The DE for allowing this to progress, no followup with the CO to make sure the committee was proper. The parents/scouters, if they didn't escalate the issues to the CO or district and just quietly moved on (although, if I faced that situation, I probably would have done just such)

Attitudes and changes--is it just in my neck of the woods?
GernBlansten replied to MollieDuke's topic in Working with Kids
Our area is probably classified as upper middle class. Most parents (both) are degree'd if not multiple degrees. I think this sets an expectation with the youth that HS degree is not optional. I'd say that HS graduation rate must be up near 95%. Most go on to college or military career. But, my nephew who grew up in the next county, did exactly as you describe. Lost interest in HS, dropped out, worked at a restaurant while getting his GED. First one in the family to go that route. He is now 24 and working construction. Regrets his path, but is trying to work on a degree at night. His sister was a star student, valedictorian, went on to get her degree. -
If BSA insurance coverage won't cover violations to the G2SS, why don't we hear any stories of scout leaders being hung out to dry? Any? All we hear is the BSA covering incidences of bad scouts being covered (e.g. Utah forest fires). Does anyone have one case where the BSA insurance did not apply?

Anyone with Double H experience?
GernBlansten replied to EagleInKY's topic in Camping & High Adventure
Yeah, another option is to go to Denver Area Council's Tahosa Alpine Adventure. It leaves Tahosa and hikes into the Indian Peaks Wilderness. They boast that Philmont is a good prep for Tahosa. http://www.denverboyscouts.org/openrosters/ViewOrgPageLink.asp?LinkKey=11107&orgkey=51 -
You know GW, I think we agree on a lot more than we disagree on. My observations are identical.
