  1. Gosh, I was hoping to find out what kinda 5000# car gets better mileage at 80MPH than it does at 55. Now I'm ignored. I'll never find out.
  2. That's funny. Me and mine have no credibility with GW yet the Bush administration is held in the highest regard. I guess that makes sense. Also makes the point of the thread. Liberals honestly know how when their lying, conservatives perhaps believe their own lies and thus don't think they are lying.
  3. And here I thought Obama quit basketball because aggressive play might push his flag pin into his chest.
  4. This is too easy GW. Waving my arms frantically, pointing to the link below.... http://www.bushlies.net/liesatoz.html
  5. 20 is an adult in the eyes of BSA and the US military. Why not have a contingent of young adults serve on the board? Are they not better to judge the wants and needs of the youth served than a bunch of crotchety old men? Remember, its for the youth.
  6. So Obama quit his church because he had a basketball game?
  7. Naw, just a poking a bit of fun at BW. I think its great that someone young and energized would like to serve on the executive board of a youth organization. Actually, I think it would be great of councils reserved a few positions just for those people. But however, it seems that money talks and enthusiasm walks.
  8. Seems like Obama isn't alone in America... "Faith is fluid: 44% say they're no longer tied to the religious or secular upbringing of their childhood. They've changed religions or denominations, adopted a faith for the first time or abandoned any affiliation altogether." Full Story.. http://www.usatoday.com/news/religion/2008-02-25-survey_N.htm?csp=34
  9. GW, if you would never vote for democrat, why do you even waste any energy justifying why you would never vote for Obama?
  10. Aways political entertainment reading the hand wringing by those who would never, ever vote for a black democrat.
  11. I'm a Farm Mechanics MBC in our district. It doesn't take having a farm to be one, just having the machinery to demonstrate and have the scouts work on. Now I live in a rural area, not a city slicker, so what we find normal around here might be mighty strange for city folk. Its basically a machine shop safety curriculum. Any shop that works on agricultural or heavy equipment might be a good source. When I counsel a scout, I have them design a safe shop, repair some broken equipment, give them a demonstration on welding, design and build a shop gadget. Have them perform some maintenance on my tractor. Endless lubing, checking, lubing, tweeking, lubing on that beast.
  12. Number one son is in transition to SeaBase Bahamas (working on the triple crown). They flew to Ft. Lauderdale this morning, are overnighting at a motel and flying to Nassau tomorrow. He called after they checked in at the motel. Said they just got lectured on not throwing the furniture into the pool like the last boy scout troop did yesterday. I had to laugh!
  13. Trev, the heresy! I've got some pipe insulation and a couple of volleyballs. I can have another one put together by the weekend.
  14. Yup, drop that 3 ton rig from 75 down to the double nickle and you will save 20% fuel right away. Of course, the type of folk who really want to commute in an SUV or crew cab don't like to be told that. Anyone seen "Who Killed the Electric Car?". Great documentary. All the major car companies were able to produce an electric car when California passed legislation requiring that 10% of the fleet needed to be zero emission. The few lucky folk that got them, loved them. But the car companies didn't like them. Zero maintenance. Only let you lease them too. Couldn't buy them. Big oil and Detroit/Tokyo lobbied heavily to have the legislation revoked and won. Shortly there after, all the cars were repossessed and crushed. But, one of the culprits is the American consumer. We haven't demanded it yet. The only reason this brief episode in electric vehicles ever happened is because government required it. Once that went away, so did the cars. Now with sky rocketing gas prices and no foreseeable end to it, consumers are now demanding it, and Detroit/Tokyo is responding. This year, GM has several hybrid models. Next year, we will have plug-in hybrids. In two years, full EVs. Watch for companies to install recharge stations for their employees. Parking meters to have pay2charge outlets. The worst thing that can happen now, is for gas prices to drop. If they do, Americans will go back to their SUVs and old ways. The market for EVs and hybrids will dry up. We will delay the inevitable for a few more years.
  15. Call me a liberal, communist, socialist or hedonist, but one positive role of government is to use its collective power to push technological advances for the good of the people. That has not been done in the energy realm. It has been left up to market forces. Well, oil has been so cheap that it wasn't practical to make a profit developing new technology, even though the writing was on the wall long ago. Without government support like NASA got during the moon shots, there was very little research done. So that's why I welcome this crisis, it will finally become profitable to explore alternative energy. The market will fill this need, it will just take some pain and time to get there now. Now, where did I put that flag pin?
  16. No free ride eh? Tip of the iceberg. Wait till you have to pay $5 for a head of lettuce. Another good reading...The Rise and Fall of the Roman Empire.
  17. I parked the crew cab truck and fired up the motorcycle and the 5 year old Accord. Took out the truck last weekend to haul the scouts and trailer to camp. Got 9MPG with the load. Hurt to fill her up when I stuck her back in her stall. But she's ready for the next outting. Until then, she'll just sit with her tank filled with liquid gold. When I was a young driver (during the first gas crunch), I drove a 15 year old Beetle. Learned a bit about keeping it running. Walked home a few times too. But then, we had to buy our own cars, parents didn't give them to us.
  18. GW is correct. If magically we could start producing oil from ANWAR, it would be sold on the global market to the top bidder. It would do nothing to reduce our retail costs. We would be better off if we reserve those oil deposits until we consume all foreign sources. Once depleted, our oil will be so valuable, we will the emperor of the planet. You want to stick it to the oil man? Use less. If your SUV gets 15 MPG, get a used Honda Civic that gets 30. It'll pay for itself within the year. If you have the coin, get a hybrid that gets 50. I have a different take than most on energy costs, its time for Americans to take their medicine. Gluttony , sloth and greed are coming home to roust. High gas prices will make Americans rethink their lifestyles and move towards alternative energy and conservation. These are good things. They never would have considered them with cheap energy prices. My view is a long term one, and I think America will be a better place for our children if we learn to use fewer fossil fuels today.
  19. I wear my seat belt because its there and it makes sense. But if it wasn't there or I knew there wasn't an airbag to keep me from going through the windshield, might make me a more cautious driver. Ever wonder if ejection seats make for more dangerous pilots?
  20. Are you a Buddhist? Because athiest Buddhists are allowed in BSA, but unaffiliated athiests must leave. Do I think you should belong to the BSA, yes, but I'm in the minority.
  21. I toyed with the idea of a PLB. Even started a thread here about a year ago on it. But now I've changed my mind. Why? One of the exciting things about going into the wild is the adventure. Not being 100% sure you are gonna make it back. Sharpens the senses. Hones the skills. Gives one pause when faced with challenge. Would gambling be so entertaining if you knew you had little chance of losing your own money? This new electronic safety net will probably cause people to push the envelope a little more, perhaps too much. Or give under-skilled folk the fortitude to venture when they have no business being. Heck, we are all gonna die someday right? Might as well do it in the wilds instead of the nursing home.
  22. I got one of dem XM portable radios. In the car, in the home, on a hike, on a bike, 200+ channels of commercial free music and talk. Its the nines.
  23. Here's the info from the domain name registration. There's a phone number that might be useful. Trails, Nations admin@nationstrails.com 197M Boston Post Road W #334 Marlborough, MA 01752 USA 508-229-0308
