  2. Basing our sustainable population level only on available square footage, is well, expected ... I guess. BTW, after we take up all the available space, where do we grow the crops? In planters on our 1000 sqft lots? Do your space estimates consider all the space for the Walmarts and Home Depots? Isn't it funny how those who promote unlimited population growth, also ridicule conservation, recycling, land management, environmental regulations and restrictions on the exploitation of limit resources?
  3. Most animals are color blind, has to do with the rods and cones and some of that mystical biological techno-babble. However, I've heard that insects are not. And bugs that pollinate are attracted to bright colors.
  4. Lisa, I think where we lose a lot of boys is the "try out" types who get into Cubs, do it for a year or two and realize it just isn't their game (arts and crafts and such). So when they reach boy scout age, they think they already did that, and don't even consider joining even though its an entirely different program. My son didn't join cubs until webelos. He's now 16, an Eagle and still active in the troop. Had we joined at Tiger, I'm not sure he would have made it to boy scouts. He's just not into parlor meetings or making sock puppets.
  5. I think she was refering to scaring off the boys with the red clown uniform.
  6. Here's an interesting view on world population. At the time Jesus was born, its estimated 200,000,000 people on the earth, 0.2 billion. It took us 1800 years before we reached one billion. It took us 127 more years or 1927 , to reach two billion. It took us 32 more years, 1959 to reach three billion. It took us 15 more years, 1974 to get to four billion. Another 13 years, 1987, got us to 5 billion. and 22 more years to get us to where we are at 6.7 billion. Its estimated that by 2025 we will be at 8 billion and 10 billion by 2040. Viral isn't it? I have no fears that the human race will cease to exist due to declining birth rates. And as for socialization, how can you not be social with 6.7 billion fellow earthlings? 7. My parents generation, families were much larger. We are people of the earth, farmers. Ma came from a brood of 9, one died at birth. Large families were your free workforce. It wasn't uncommon to lose a few kids due to illness or farm accident. So you needed a large family to make the farm work. Now that we are an urban society, and all the farms are going the way of corporate mega-farms, we no longer need the large family to make a go of it. Having more than two kids, just enough to replace you, is the norm and socially acceptable. Everyone of my generation in my family did just that. Except one brother who had 3 and another brother who had zero. Next time you have trouble merging on the freeway, just think, do we need more people?
  8. In the age of NetFlix and OnDemand cable, I never get to the theatre. I just had to see Grand Torino, so I took in the matinee last week. Munching my popcorn and watching the commercials, cute animated critters come up and tell me to turn off my cell phone and refrain from talking during the feature. I'm OK with that as I shut down the phone. Then the picture stops and an usher comes to the front of the theatre and warns us to make sure our phones are off and no text messaging during the movie. And he warned that he was going to keep coming back and checking on us to make sure. Any malfeasance will warrant ejection. During the movie, I noticed about every 30 minutes, the usher would return and walk the aisles looking for violators. I guess its come to this.
  9. Shall we speculate on the motives and religious teachings of the 11 year old killer too? http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090222/ap_on_re_us/pregnant_woman_killed
  10. Where we camp, zero coverage so it never an issue. Mountains are wonderful things. But as Mr. Zimmerman sang, "the times, they are a changing."
  11. Its interesting to note that the killing in Orchard Park was the result of domestic violence, something that transcends religious identity, but because the couple were Mulsim, it must be their faith that is to blame. Or least to be used as an example to paint all followers of that faith with the same violent tendencies.
  12. Here's an idea... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mQaXjqfAgkQ
  13. How many heard about the killing of the ski area manager in Colorado last month because he wasn't Christian. http://www.denverpost.com/breakingnews/ci_11401013
  14. Its their crew, not yours. They can do as they wish as long as it isn't contrary to the G2SS.
  15. What about atheists and polytheists? They can't be good for our society either. A religious test for citizenship?
  16. I get it. In order to preserve our freedom of religion, we must first, eliminate it.
  17. Fascinating. So the only way to stem the incoming tide of the Muslim hoard, is to out procreate them? Who wudda thunk?
  18. We had a similar runaround for a scout trying to get approval for a project by the city open space committee. After months of being strung along, he finally gave up and started another project. Needless to say, when a scout proposes something that needs that committees approval, I warn him and council him to consider other projects. As for this Chief, I'd be talking to others who might consider projects with him, even from other units. I think he'll find nobody beating down his door to get stuff done.
  19. So overpopulation is irrational fear mongering of liberals. Is overrepresentation of muslims irrational fear mongering of conservatives?
  20. Adult step in to assist? ABSOLUTELY NOT! This is an excellent opportunity for the scout to demonstrate his leadership and overcome this obstacle. Council the scout, but don't do anything more. Make sure that he includes this problem in his write up. What an excellent chance for him to tell his EBOR about the issue. After its all said and done, if you really must, you may have a word with the chief. However, that might backfire. I'd just guide other candidates from working with him in the future. 21. Parasites, left unchecked, will eventually overwhelm the host and the entire population and host is sacrificed. Is there an upper limit on population growth? When are there too many humans? Is our society really just a global ponzi scheme where an economy can only be sustained by continual and unchecked growth? Is there a symbiotic balance where the parasites and host can survive in harmony? Are we there yet, beyond it, or not even close?
  22. How much were the custom numbers? Our unit just passed 50 years.
  23. " I have attended WB and staffed it twice, but I have learned much more about Patrol Method from reading these two volumes. Some of the material is a little dated (it's only 70 years old) but I find the techniques for working with the boys to be very effective. " That's an interesting confession there Brent. I haven't been to WB but our former SM did, and our current one just got his beads. They haven't been able to get the patrol method working in our unit. But we talk alot about it. All the SM training I've taken have very little about delivering the patrol method. We have never been able to achieve it. I think Kudu has it right. BSA has moved away from it or at least doesn't emphasis it anymore. To get it, you need to go to the historical archives like you have.
