  1. Acco, the treatment for hypothermia changes like the guidelines for CPR have. In my last WFA course (2 years ago), the trend for hypotherma first aid at that time was to refrain from warm liquids due to the placibo effect and the body's reaction to the warming stimulus. The body stops shivering. Allow the victim to shiver. Warm liquids give comfort but have no real effect on transfering heat beyond the stomach. Shivering warms the organs. That's why we naturally do it. Why would you want to stop that? In two weeks, I'm getting recertified in WFA, the recommendation may have again changed. I'm sure CPR has again.
  2. The first aid for hypothermia is to first remove the cause from the individual. If they are wet, get them dry. If its cold, put them somewhere warm. Shivering is good. Its the body generating its own heat. Giving someone warm drinks tricks the body into thinking its warm and stops the shivering. This is bad, you don't want them to warm up too fast and stop the shivers. The core temp is still too low to generate its own heat and the person will relapse into hypothermia. Give the person water and food. That's fuel the body needs to warm up. Warm water and put in bottles. Pack the bottles around the person in a sleeping bag. As the body naturally warms up, the shivering will stop.
  3. If its necessary to defend ourselves from invasion and allow us to overthrow our own government, I say its protected by the 2nd amendment. And if you want to use it to fish with, that's just called freedom.
  4. Why can't I have an RPG? According to Brent's and TheScout's interpretation of the 2nd Amendment I can. And its absolutely necessary to preserve our freedom. Why isn't there an outcry? Where's the NRPGA?
  5. Uh Brent, full auto weapons are still available for purchase to licensed dealers. Where do you think those guys who gave the Uzi to that 10 year old kid in Mass to shoot his own head off got it? Before 1986?
  6. Why isn't the NRA up in arms (pun intended) about the 1934 automatic firearm act? If they were consistent, they would be lobbying for unrestricted access to all military hardware. They are all arms, and supposedly protected by the constitution, and necessary to repel an invasion or overthrow our existing government. Why can't I have an RPG?
  7. I'd share a great anecdote, but I'm feeling rather niggardly tonight.
  8. We should never infringe on your ability to bear arms, the ones in place when the amendment was written. There is no way the founding fathers could have anticipated the evolution of weaponry. If their intention was to equip the citizenry with the tools to resist an oppressive government, they would have stated it in a way to assure your right to whatever arms the military had access to. Otherwise, its meaningless from the standpoint of allowing the public to violently overthrow the government. SAMs, RPGs, land mines would all me necessary to be effective. Brent standing in his street with his AK47 and Colt45 will suffer the same fate as many Iraqi have resisting our soldiers. But wait, maybe the founding father's did foresee it. They reference a well regulated militia. We have militia, but we now call them the National Guard. Each state has them, and they are under state control. And they have SAMs, RPGs and land mines. And they are made up of guess what? Citizens. So what's the fuss? Seems like we have it covered. Why the need for private ownership of military hardware?
  9. Advancement without government help? Third world nations are the control for the experiment of deregulation and small government. What contributions to technical advancement have third world nations made?
  10. I've always lived fiscally conservative. Lived within our means. Modest home, paid off. No car debt. No card debt. Took the tribe to Mexico for Christmas. Bought the wife a new car, great deals. NTiers this summer, Philmont 2010. I did recently take out a HELOC because the rates are really good and I need some roof repairs. College is just around the corner too and the kids trust funds were stolen by Wall Street. Probably feed off that when needed if they don't come back. Those of us who walked the talk of conservativism, will do fine. Those who just talk the talk, will suffer.
  11. I think I'm going to invest in those Bose QuietComfort 3 Noise Canceling headphones. The whine is becoming annoying.
  12. One thing for sure, global warming is a farce. Ed and I agree. Hell has officially frozen over.
  13. Wow. Now there are some very scout like statements. Do you kiss your mother with that potty mouth?
  14. The AWB never really took guns away from Americans. It just made them alter them so the cosmetically limited features were eliminated, only to be re-applied by aftermarket sources. That's why the law is silly and non-effective. The fact that the gun nuts got their collective panties in a wad because of it is also rather pathetic. The failure of the liberals was to even try to enact it. It gave the gun lobby a rallying cry, one that could get the masses off their $$ses and vote against their best interests. Conservative republicans may have their own idiotic crosses to bear, but they don't hold a candle to the lunacy of some of the irrelevant stuff the liberals try to pass. Especially gun stuff. Case in point. "We can decide that we've go to keep the guns out of the hands of our children. We can make safer weapons. We can make safer bullets." Joycelyn Elders-1993
  15. You hit a significant issue. This is a venture crew, not a scout troop or cub pack. You can advise, but it is really their crew. They set the rules, you just make sure it doesn't violate G2SS. If they want to write a strict rule, so be it. If they don't care, so be it. You really don't have much voice here except to walk away.
  16. Looks like you have time to do it. Like Luke returning to Dagobah to become a Jedi... Now ask yourself, young padwan, "Try not. Do, or do not, there is no try."
  17. As a liberal, I think the AWB is really stupid legislation. It does nothing to protect the public and only enrages and fortifies the gun nuts. Neither of which is healthy for our society.
  18. I would hope that the conservatives would engage in a bloodless coup over a slash and burn approach for regaining power. "In order to preserve our nation, we first had to destroy it."
  19. The faster Obama fails and brings the nation to its knees, the quicker we can establish a conservative utopia from its ashes. Now I understand why we hope he fails. Soon. This is a clarifying moment for me.
  20. I guess the real definition of pork is if you like what they're spending the money on its a stimulus, and if you don't, its pork.
  21. What is the researcher spending the money on? Is he just shredding the money and burning it in a beaker? The researcher is likely spending the money on rent, staff, equipment, supplies. Just like the construction company. Trickle down right? Where stimulus money doesn't help, is when you give it directly to people who just put it in savings or pay off debt. That isn't stoking the economic boilers. And if the people just spend it on flat screen TVs made in China, who does that help?
  22. Freedom will not have the same meaning as you think it does if we don't have financial security. Unless you equate freedom with anarchy.
  23. Pork is spending, targeted to a specific district of a congressman, and attached to a bill that has nothing to do with the spending. Like attaching the bridge to nowhere to a defense appropriations bill. But, the stimulus bill, is all about spending. That is its purpose. Whether the spending is on a bridge or a trail, or research, its meant to stimulate the economy. By definition, there cannot be any pork in this bill. And if your congressman didn't get spending to occur in your district, then he/she didn't do their job for you.
  24. The president has my full support. I want our nation to succeed.
