"If Roy's job were open and only advertised to those here at the Scouter Network, would anybody take it? If so, then what are your qualifications?" Let's promote a DE and give him a 10% raise. Would that help?

Many patches have no "earning requirement" and may be worn by anyone. Other patches are restricted in that one cannot get one without earning it, ie. the Philmont arrowhead. Badges of rank may not be worn by adults in any circumstance.

Sometimes our diligent, dedicated, and efficient moderator staff will delete duplicate posts. However it has been observed that deleting one of two posts with identical timestamps will result in both being removed.

The fact that this thread is in the Issues & Politics forum does not signal a green light for you people to slam one another. Consider your true intent, and what parts of the Scout Law you are ignoring before you post.

Hmmm... Your right about that, every one of your posts is duped. Hitting the submit button twice will result in the 2nd post having a post time several seconds later. Yours are identical. Maybe your ideas are worth double?

"I have to admit that one part of this is a personal hot button for me. I really, really hate being nickeled and dimed." I'm with you on that one, and all your examples. I'd rather see the annual registration fee get bumped to $40 a head, with a reduction in the numerous other hits. Same income for BSA, less frustration for members.

Youth Leadership Training - Youth Leader Input
FScouter replied to rpushies's topic in Working with Kids
"I plan on taking the PDF file of the unit meeting plan, #34425 and making it into a form that can be filled out on the leader's computer and then printed." I duplicated the form as an Excel spreadsheet. Input the activity description, person responsible, etc. The spreadsheet calculates the start time for each activity based on the meeting start time and # of minutes. I'll e-mail it to anyone that wants a look. Send me a PM. -
The Scoutmaster Handbook devotes an entire chapter to troop program planning. Its a process that works well for our troop.
-
The BSA booklet "Knots and How to Tie Them" has a plan as well.

What is your experience with Den Chiefs for Webelos I?

From the Cub Scout Leader Book, chapter 10: Tiger Cub dens dont have den chiefs. Den Chiefs are selected and assigned with the input and agreement of the Senior Patrol Leader, Scoutmaster, Cubmaster, Pack Committee, and Den Leader. Den Chief is a Boy Scout position of responsibility that meets the leadership requirement for Star, Life, or Eagle ranks. One of his responsibilities is to attend Den Chief Training. The Scoutmaster Handbook, the Boy Scout Handbook, the Scoutmaster Junior Leader Training Kit, and the Cub Scout Leader Book spell out the details. By the way, a girl member of a Venturing crew may now be a den chief.

Sometimes there is a delay of as much as 30 seconds while the message is being posted which may lead one to believe that nothing is happening. Double posts may occur if the "Submit Your Message" button is hit more than once.

"Incentives" (bribery) and enrollment fraud
FScouter replied to jkhny's topic in Open Discussion - Program
"You cant please everyone" There are Scout-haters out there that will slam everything BSA does or does not do. -
"Any ideas on how I could counter this argument?" Yes, the committee could take Troop Committee Challenge and/or read the Troop Committee Guidebook. They would learn that their purpose is to support the Scoutmaster and the decisions of the PLC. And that the committee is not a decision-making body.

I wonder what kind of outcries and criticisms we'd be hearing if this Jamboree took place 25 or 30 years ago?

My experience has been that the kids that have the sloppiest tents have the most items "stolen".

Perhaps a less focused question would be more appropriate, such as "How do you demonstrate the 12th point of the Scout Law in your daily life?"

IF the objective was to protect the boys from themselves, the best approach would be for the SM to appoint the boy leaders. Consider the possibility however that the objective is not to ensure that the best leader is elected. Rather than erect barriers to keep out undesirables, I'd give the electorate a speech about the characteristics they should consider when selecting their leader. Then let them do it. "Train them, trust them, let them lead." If they elect a bad leader, perhaps there was something lacking in their training, their ability to choose a good leader. If the Scoutmaster is doing a good job training boy leaders (his primary task) and teaching boys to select good leaders, then qualification rules should not be necessary.

The Cub Scout Leader book has a Parent Resource Survey form in the appendix.

"I wonder what would happen if at Council and District meetings if we members had to drop and perform push-ups for any and all construed lack of results, follow-through, missed meetings, lack of uniform, late arrivals, etc?" Great object lesson.

The boys in our troop have suggested several times that we impose minimum requirements to be a candidate for SPL. Sometimes the proposed requirements are so restrictive that only 1 or 2 boys qualify. Asked why they want restrictions the reasoning is they don't want the wet-behind-the-ears Tenderfoot to be the SPL, or the disruptive knucklehead, or the kid that rarely attends campouts. Of course those kinds of candidates would never get enough votes to be elected anyway, so what's the point in screening them out?

"does the pack have the right to require that as a pack leader certain expectations (training) must be met to work with its boys?" The chartered organization must approve all adult leaders. If they want to specify some minimum requirements or training, that is their prerogative. They do not however, nor does anyone, have authority to alter the requirements for BSA awards.
