Uniform insignia on street clothes looks silly. Insignia for the red wool jac-shirt is discussed in the Insignia Guide.

Should he stay or should he go?
FScouter replied to GernBlansten's topic in Open Discussion - Program
Adults should be removed when they are a threat to kids, or a detriment to the program, or ineffective. Is he? -
You could mount them in a lathe, or better yet just turn new ones.

Troop Librarian gets trashed from time to time as being a light position, nothing more than keeping the MB books in a shoebox. Maybe. Or, it is what you to make it to be. Librarian - Oversee the care and use of troop materials including books, MB pamphlets, magazines, printed resources, Scouts own materials, skit scripts, COH ideas, topo maps, trail info, summer camp brochures or CDs, sheet music or song lyrics, music CDs, OA info, camporee booklet, troop games list/rules, troop recipe list, Boys Life and Scouter magazine collection, troop copy of Field Guide, tree-finder book, SM Handbook, Troop Committee Guidebook, A Time to Tell video, MB counselor list, receipts & warranties for troop equipment, owners manuals. Maintain a catalog of troop library resources. Check out materials to Scouts and adult leaders. Maintain check-out system to ensure return of materials Follow up on late returns. Identify new revisions to MB pamphlets. Purchase new and replacement items as needed. Repair books and materials as needed. Librarian can be a great position of responsibility. Its only light if it is taken lightly and implemented lightly.

Scout spirit is defined as living the Scout Oath and Scout Law.

I may be wrong, but I think Scouting aims more to responsibility that to leadership. In fact, "leadership" isn't mentioned at all in the vision, mission, or aims of Scouting. It's relegated to only 1 of 8 methods used to achieve the aims and fulfill the mission. Maybe that's what the positions are called "positions of responsibility".

The best time for a boy to learn basic leadership skills is long before he approaches his Eagle leadership service project. Perhaps he is weak in leadership skills. Jack Welch is a great leader but hed probably flop on a flag ceremony if he doesnt know how to do one. The father is right in the sense that increasing a boys leadership skills can continue through the project; acting in a leadership role will strengthen leadership skills. Its not correct though to say that leadership training starts with the Eagle project. The SM should be concerned about ensuring a Scout facing a project will be successful. More mentoring will be needed. More discussion needed with the dad about taking over the decision making. But once the boy decides to work on that rank requirement, the role of the SM is help him through it, not throttle him back.

The requirement is to use leadership skills to carry out a service project. If the Scout has no leadership skills, it will be difficult to carry out the Eagle service project. The purpose of the Eagle project most assuredly is not to develop the leadership skills if none exist. The skills should be first developed in the positions of responsibility the Scout has held through the first 5 ranks. I think a Scoutmaster would be remiss if he pushed a Scout along into an Eagle project knowing his lack of leadership skills would likely result in failure to demonstrate leadership in completing the project.

Thanks for pointing that out again. We can save billions on zinc instead of aluminum. While we're at it, ditch the nickel too and save billons and billions more on copper and nickel. -
The only "facts" we know are what has been filtered down by a TV news reporter. That always means you got only part of the story, with a slant one way or another, and who knows which way. Once one accepts that most "news" has been distorted, it's hard to get too bothered by whatever has been implicated.

I'm always amazed when folks put more credence in the wrong information they are fed, than in the reality that is. Then again, perhaps folks listen, cluck their tongue, and mentally dismiss what they've heard. I tend to not be concerned too much about others spreading false stories. Truth speaks for itself.

Impressions are in the eye of the beholder. If a woman wants to believe that Scouting is "a Christian program" in spite of reality there isn't much you can do to change her opinion. We should only be clear that we don't ACT like a Christian group. Eventually, a person will change his perception to match reality, well at least we hope so.

I suppose there is nothing "bad" about that form of communication. It seems rather ineffective however to attempt to communicate an idea using a language that a good chunk of people don't understand. I've seen the soup can painting, meant nothing to me even after pondering it. I did read somewhere that it mean he hates commercialism. So I guess he got the message across, it just took a 3rd party interpreter to make it happen. I also read that Warhol did not even paint it; it was just his idea and he directed someone else to do the painting. I suppose there may be a hidden message there too. Does anyone have an idea about what Serrano is really trying to communicate? It seems obvious to me, but I have no gift of discerning the messages in art. (no fair googling it, just look at the picture)

So why doesn't he just come out and say what he wants to say, instead of forcing the viewer to "think" about it? Personally, I don't think much about urine or elephant poop and if a person attempts to communicate using those terms, he failed. It looks more like he was looking for a reaction, and he got it.

If one chooses to wear an unauthorized patch, it doesn't make much difference where it's worn.

The Issues & Politics forum is a place where forum members can exchange their viewpoints and opinions in a healthy debate on any topic that arises. Negativity, hatefulness, and bickering are not conducive to intelligent discussion. If some forum members cannot moderate themselves, the forum moderators may intervene. Posts made with the intention of goading another forum member into a bickering session have a good chance of being moderated away. Similarly, un-Scout-like posts made with the express intention of disparaging or disrespecting another forum member may also be deleted.

Of course I could be wrong, but some may object not so much to hearing the "mention of God", but that hearing it from the government represents a violation of the U.S. constitution - "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion ..."

eagle scout ordered to take god out of park project

I'd be in favor of removing "In God We Trust", if the Treasury Department would also agree to eliminate the dollar bill, replacing it with the dollar coin. That would save billions. While we're at it, get rid of the penny too. That would save more billions, and conserve copper and aluminum natural resources at the same time. It would help my back too if I didn't have to pick them up off the ground anymore. -

A statement is not a lie unless it is untrue and the purpose of making the untrue statement is to deceive others. An opinion that In God We Trust is not a religious phrase and should remain on currency is not a lie unless it can be proved that it IS a religious phrase AND that the person made the statement did so with the intention of deceiving others as to the real truth of the phrase. Of course anyone may declare anyone else to be lying, but doing so outside the generally accepted definition of the words tends to erode ones credibility. -

"And no, 'in god we trust' should not be on currency, but I find it ironic that the only way religious people can justify keeping it is to blatantly lie and claim it has no religious significance." Come now Meryln, be reasonable. As is commonly understood, a "lie" is a false statement made with the intention to deceive. A statement that "In God We Trust" has no religious significance sounds more like an opinion than than a blatant lie with the intention to deceive others. -
You must know and understand the requirements printed in the book, and you must be Akela.

Of course you heard about the guy that had a usable sofa he wanted to get rid of. He put it out on the curb with a sign "FREE". After several days no one had taken advantage of the offer. So he put out a different sign "USED SOFA, $25, INQUIRE WITHIN". It was gone the next morning.

Is that related to the Western Rangers, founded in 1914 by Harry James? That group was involved in establishing the San Gorgonio Mountain Wilderness.
