This has nothing to do with morals. A Scout is courteous. Some people may not be offended by the use of profanity or vulgarity in their presence, but some will be offended. Its not much different than taking a bath once a week even if you dont think you need it; you do it so as to not be offensive to others. Sure, you can exercise your right to be vulgar and to stink, but why would anyone choose to push that nastiness on others?

Whether you would become an Eagle Scout or not was already determined before you sat down for the board of review. You completed the merit badges. You completed a leadership service project. You completed all the requirments listed in your Handbook. You lived the Scout Oath and Scout Law in your daily life. At that point all that remains is for you to convince the board that you've met all the requirements and are worthy of the rank. So, YOU must answer the question from your heart: Have you or have not earned the Eagle Scout rank?

"Ay yi yi yi yi. Carumba!" Ricky, standing with his hands on hips, stern look on his face, "LUCY, what have you and Ethyl been up to??" Lucy, looking sheepishly at the floor, "Nothing sir."

NEW (CHANGED) EAGLE APPLICATION on NESA Website!!!
FScouter replied to John-in-KC's topic in Advancement Resources
The boy has always been required to record the number of hours in the project workbook. The new app just has a place to copy the number from the workbook to the app. Now, if the application said a certain minimum number of hours was required, that would be a noteworthy change. -
You got some good advice about using New Scout Patols, Troop Guides, Instructors, and an assistant SPL. I don't agree however with that part about assigning patrol leaders. All Scouts deserve to be represented on the PLC and that's best done when the new Scouts select one of their own to represent them. The Troop Guide is there as an older experienced Scout to guide and help the inexperience PL. You'll find a lot of good ideas in your Senior Patrol Leader Handbook too.

The decorum of the forums 99.9% in the hands of the forum membership. I'd suggest not responding to unScout-like behavior.

Hey, Beavah set up the "good guys vs. bad guys" scenario in the opening post. Trouble is, everyone seems to be taking the side of the good guys and there's no bad guy to put down. Since Bob is the guy everyone loves to hate it looks like one or two of you have opted to declare him to be the bad guy. It's a tough crowd, yes.

COMPLAINTS: Vanishing and Moving Messages
FScouter replied to Beavah's topic in Forum Support & Announcements
The topic of this thread is (was) forum moderation and weve veered significantly away from that. Since there seem to be no more comments about that, now is a good time to close this thread. There are other moderation threads that can be added to, or if you have a new angle on the subject, feel free to start a new thread. Unless topics like God, religion, sexual dalliance, and epithets have a direct bearing on Scouting, those subjects can be more thoroughly discussed in the Issues & Politics forum, which was established specifically for that kind of discussion. Thanks Vicki for the reminder about veering off topic. (This message has been edited by a staff member.) -
If there any BSA recommendations as to age for a den chief, they would be found in the Senior Patrol Leader handbook or the Scoutmaster Handbook, both of which have long discussions about boy leaders in general and positions of responsibility specifically. The Cub Scout Leader book would be another place with guidance. You might try asking the trainer person for a page number in a book so you could read more about it and become more informed. You could also ask him his recommendations on training the den chief yourself. Perhaps he would loan you the training syllabus. Or, you could attend the training yourself.

Yeah, patrol outings have always been a part of the "BSA Program". It's a reflection on the Scoutmaster if a patrols are not actually DOING patrol activities. Part of the SM job is to train boy leaders such that solo patrol activities can happen without undue adult anxiety. There likely are troops when the adults discourage or refuse to allow patrol activites. That would be a good example of a troop discarding part of what BSA recommends and doing their own thing instead.

I don't think anyone has been fooled. Show of hands? Who's been tricked? It's kinda like a debate between the political candidates - lots of attempts at trickery, but who has really been fooled?

There is a software glitch that is preventing the "Improving Webelos Programming" thread from being displayed. It's being worked on.

Censorship- Sometimes it happens
FScouter replied to OldGreyEagle's topic in Forum Support & Announcements
Interesting comment about the high school girl. Suppose she does dumb things, binge drunkenness or free sex for example, and posts about her escapades on the internet. Is she damaged more by the posting and resultant comments, or from the things she does that generate comments? The same could be said for Pappy. -
Silly me, I thought Beavah wanted to discuss the value of using old program materials in today's program. But instead it appears you all (Beavah included) would rather discuss Bob White and whether or not he properly used the term "damaged". Consider whether your comments add to the topic described in the thread title and if not, start a new topic. And please, moderate yourselves.

Its kinda hard to sign a deleted post! Perhaps a post could be made to the effect bizarre personal attack posted by JoePoster has been deleted by moderator FScouter, or such could be added. But knowing which moderator did what edit or deleted what post really serves no purpose except perhaps to satisfy a morbid curiosity. If it must be known, it was I that deleted two posts from badenP. Two PMs were sent regarding same. Both deleted posts were directed by name to three individual forum members. Both posts contained comments specifically and publicly questioning the intelligence of another forum member and that persons ability understand basic common sense. Neither post had any content other that a public berating of another. He was warned in another PM recently about this specific issue. The best moderation is done by each forum member, before one hits the submit button. Post deletion is really in the hands of he who has made the post. Healthy debate and even heated debate on issues is totally appropriate. Berating the idea or opinion of another person begins to go beyond debate. We do seem to have seen a lot of that the last few days. Publicly berating another forum member is too much. -
Classb.com does patches, and is also a licensed distributer. http://www.classb.com

"The license fee is passed on to his customers, so Troop XXX would have paid the $250 + $100 job cost for a total of $350." The $250 fee is a one-time license fee to the vendor, not a fee per order.

".. the fleur de lis is not and never has been a registered trademark, its origin goes back to early French history." A drawing of a mouse is not a trademark either, unless the drawing is of Mickey Mouse. Similarly, the distinctive BSA red, white, and blue fleur de lis used in conjuction with Scouting is a registered trademark of BSA.

It is never inappropriate to wear the Scout uniform for a Scout meeting. If anyone feels "upstaged", there is an easy fix for that.

"I KNOW NUTHINK!" would avoid a slander lawsuit too.

Gee Eamonn, I'm a simple guy. Can I join the dope club too? Sometimes simple is most effective: within Scouting report to SE, outside Scouting report to hotline. Like Cordelia says, "Your job is not to investigate, your job is to recognize and report." Confounding a simple issue with legal definitions, opinions, a mismash of federal, state, and local laws, and a search for understandin' just enourages folks to do nothing. Cordelia has it right.

"I think they really got into it, and he sure likes his camo." There's better ways than Scouting to get into camo. There are duck clubs, hunting clubs, gun clubs, military schools, ROTC, and psuedo-para-military orgs. Scouting isn't anything about any of that stuff.

Gee, what happened to "friendly" and "courteous"? Lots of advice here, facts perhaps, opinions for sure, lots of legalistic mumbo-jumbo, follow BSA YP training, forget it it's a bunch of hooey, even advice to to nothing unless you have "proof". What's the average den leader or Scoutmaster to do?? My personal choice is to ignore all the noise and go with what I learned in BSA youth protection training.

"Self-chartered" units essentialy have no chartered org. It's a paperwork manipulation where the unit committee assumes the role of CO as well.
