  1. "The other group accepts the membership policies but wants the BSA to abide by the laws governing them as a 'private religious organization'. " What are some of the laws that BSA does not abide by?
  2. Must be sunspots ....or mosquitoes. Affects all the forums. PM's too.
  3. What I did or didnt say isnt really much to get excited about. If you want to make the case that policy derives from isolated incidents by all means you should do so. But I really dont see any furthering of your argument by drawing my name into it as the source of that statement. It is YOUR statement that we generate policy because of isolated incidents. Now if you dont understand what I said, its easy enough to question it, or ignore it. To clarify, I would say that rules have their basis in common and pervasive practices that are detrimental to the common welfare, not because of isolated instances. You may argue otherwise.
  4. "... just as FScouter suggests." Beavah, you have a bad habit of rewriting what other folks post; apparently you believe that bolsters your case.
  5. Governmental entities don't care how much things cost.
  6. "(I'll let Bob explain to Ed how he completely misinterpreted that point)" Speaking as a moderator, that would best be handled in a PM.
  7. The most important thing you can do to assure the success of the district is to ensure that the volunteer district chairman understands that his most important responsibility is to staff the district committee with functioning people in every position. The functions of unstaffed committees fall to the DE, and the purpose of a DE is NOT to do volunteer jobs.
  8. Perhaps this topic didn't get much response because no one had yet seen the same article.
  9. "Plus we've established a culture of safety-by-control rather than safety-by-knowledge,..." Gee, I dunno. I'd say safety-by-control followed from folks plunging ahead with no knowledge and no desire to get any knowledge. If folks all had knowledge and "understanding" we wouldn't need control. But that's not the case.
  10. "Yes, Bob's e-mail to me was as I expected. I was and continue to be wrong and full of pride." Tell us again how it is right to design an award on behalf of BSA, for use on the BSA uniform, without involving BSA? It may be a nice thing to do and all that, recognizing Scout's merit badge accomplishments, but someone pointing out that it is wrong does not equate to an attack. Why not design a certificate, or a trophy, or an equipment decoration patch? There's no problem with those things. But when you want to sell your personal version of a BSA award intending for it to be worn on the BSA uniform, don't be surprised if it gets pointed out that it's "wrong".
  11. One could do a tracheotomy too with a pocketknife. Like the epinephrine injection, both should be a last resort. I suspect the ease of use of the epi-pen would translate into completly inappropriate use were it readily available in the firstaid kit of Joe Hiker.
  12. Such sagacious counsel Ed. What to do is what were debating.
  13. "Somehow I wonder in a situation like that if one would be sued for doing too much or not enough?" You might be sued if your strategy was to ignore rules and sage advice, stash a few epi-pens in your first aid kit, and at the first sign of trouble stab your "patient".
  14. Ed, you're out of character. Based on your previous positions on uniforming, I'd expect to hear something like "And a uniform is not even required!!!"
  15. Im far more fearful of the idiot that thinks he has understanding and thereby excuses himself from rules, guidelines, and training.
  16. I always detest these topics about snipe hunts and other forms of harrassment of young Scouts. But it is interesting to see the bullies reveal themselves.
  17. It's like a bad penny, it keeps turning up. How to kill the beast?
  18. BALOO and pack committee specific trainings are for Cub Scout pack leaders. Troop Committee Challenge is the specific training for the troop committee chair. It will be VERY helpful in you position if ALL committee members also have the training. The committee works best if they're all on the same page with the same training. You also need two copies of the Troop Committee Guide book; one for you and the other for the other committee members to share. Chapter 4 covers committee organization, responsibilities, and positions.
  19. The guarantee is "Satisfaction Guaranteed". If you're dissatisfied with the purchase, return it for refund or replacement. If after 5 or 10 years your socks wore out and you're dissatisfied, send them back. Retailers know there will be a certain amount of dissatisfaction and build the cost into the pricing.
  20. Page 88 of the Handbook has several ideas.
  21. "Even if this was correct, we aren't at war." Tell that to the families of the dead guys.
  22. Ask the father to get the answer and report back.
  23. It appears the secondary objective of the participants in this topic is to share wisdom, gain perspective, and learn from others. The primary objective appears to be to beat each other up. Thats not a purpose of the forums.
  24. As my dad would say, I've got a sneakin' suspicion the objective of asking the question was not to get the answer.
  25. Youre requiring that in addition to the requirements set forth by BSA and administered by the local council through the merit badge dean, counselors must also meet the Ed Mori requirements, and that if the counselor does not meet your unspecified requirements, he may not be a counselor.
