"They would have to be nuts to buy from national anyway, too over priced." nldscout - Apples to apples, how over-priced are CSPs purchased from national?
-
How much does national charge for CSPs? How much do the other guys charge?

It's very sad and unfortunate that a kid screwed up and pointed a harmless gun at a cop and paid for it with his life. Guns aren't toys, and playing games that simulate killing other human beings is not the kind of lesson that BSA wants to impart to our boys.

The correct position for the world crest is "centered horizontally over the left pocket and vertically between left shoulder seam and top of pocket."

I don't know of any BSA publication that soley addresses boards of review, but the following have discussions about the subject: Troop Committee Guidebook #34505 Advancement Committee Policies and Procedures # 33088 Scoutmaster Handbook

a forum success story (well, sort of..., or perhaps not)

The boys can't do what they haven't been trained to do. -
It's better to be safe than sorry. You never can tell about these things. So watch your P's and Q's.

What religion(s) require that the flag patch be removed from the uniforms of its members? And for what purpose?

I too would emphasize having more than one adult. Three or four would be better still. Its a big job to work with a group of boys without other adults to help. But one adult with two or more Scouts does not violate BSA rules, except on trips or outings. One-on-one contact is never permitted. A personal conference such as a Scoutmaster conference must be done in view of others. I dont believe there has been any change in the rules. The Guide to Safe Scouting seems quite clear about this and Im not aware of any other publication that states a requirement for two adults other than for trips and outings.

In Search of Excellence? Don't go to Nashville...

If a child does a good job, Mommy and Daddy had better not give him any praise, lest his brother or sister feel like less than a human being. -
"I can be the only adult in a room with two or more Boy Scouts." KoreaScouter is not incorrect. Two-deep leadership refers to trips and outings. Its not to be confused with one-on-one contact. See chapter 1 of the Guide to Safe Scouting.

The first step is the "Introduction to Leadership" session conducted by the Scoutmaster. Its an informal discussion that takes place when a boy assumes a position of leadership in the troop. The Scoutmaster will talk about the job, the expectations, resources available, etc. There is a chapter in the Scoutmaster Handbook that covers training junior leaders.

In the old days if Johnny failed the test, he sat in the corner wearing the Dunce cap. Later, Billy excels brilliantly and gets a gold star next to him name. Today, any mention that Billy did a good job is equivalent to putting Johnny in the corner with the dunce cap? -
The new Boy Scout Requirements 2004 book (#33215) has just been published. There's nothing in there about new requirements for Star rank.

Does anyone have a reference to a publication that discusses the flag patch as being optional?

The National Distribution Center (800-323-0732) has available some CD-ROMs that might help. I have not seen them, but maybe your council would have copies you could look at. The price is $23 each. # AV627A - ScoutShots2: The Historical Collection # AV629 - ScoutShots 4: The Outdoor Collection Slide Set # AV630 - ScoutShots 5: Jamboree! # AV631 - ScoutShots 6: The Venturing Experience # AV632 - ScoutShots 7: Boy Scouts # AV624 - Norman Rockwell Paintings Slide Set # AV633 - ScoutShots 8: The Venturing Collection

Sad Story - a scout lost - question for Mike Long

That also solves the problem encountered when little Billy tries to deliver the order and the customer changes his mind and says "Oh, I don't think I want any popcorn."

It's tragic when a boy loses his father. There is a way that this boy can camp, and that BSA will approve. The boy can sleep in a tent with other boys. If that is too much of a stretch for him, maybe he could have a practice campout in his back yard with a couple of friends. Or "campout" in the basement of his house. That might help him get accustomed to the idea of sleeping without an adult. When the boy is ready he could then camp comfortably in a tent with boys, and that would solve the dilemma. There is a way to clear up any question about the adult and youth tent rule. Have your DE or Scout Executive write on council letterhead his permission for the boy to sleep with the adult of your choosing. I'm sure he would agree that this idea would be OK, because the Guide to Safe Scouting is such a "very lousy goosey bit of rule writing". Scout Executives are taught at Scout Executive school that rules may be safely ignored as long as someone has trouble understanding the rule.

What a great show. I remember he always had "stuff" in those big coat pockets. What will happen now to Bunny Rabbit, Mr. Moose, Grandfather Clock, and the Magic Drawing Board? I suppose Mr. GreenJeans will have to take all his animals back to the farm too. And what of Tom Terrific? And Crabby Appleton?

Your're right NJCubScouter. It's too bad that some of us spend a whole lot of time picking apart a document in an effort to justify our positions. The lay person really has no option but to read the BSA literature and interpret it to the best of his ability. I think that sometimes we know in our hearts that what we want to do is wrong, but go ahead anyway, justifying our action based on ambiguities in the literature. This thread started out that way. Bsabrit wants to take his co-ed crew camping, but he doesn't have a female leader. He knows he cannot do that and has come to this forum with his dilemma. There really isn't much to say about that problem except "find a female leader".

Why do you people keep looking for "legit" ways to put an adult into the same tent with a boy? It ain't allowed and it's plain stupid to do so! What can be more clear than the bold print BSA policy "NO YOUTH WILL STAY IN THE TENT OF AN ADULT OTHER THAN HIS OR HER PARENT OR GUARDIAN." You all need to watch the "It Happened to Me" child abuse video.

There are some very sound accounting reasons for the council wanting to control this. Shortcutting normal accounting practices creates headaches and reduces accountability. It's a lot harder to document the transactions if the income and expense parts are left out. It would probably even cost more time and money to allow units to do their own calculations and hold back what they consider to be their profit. I can see the council bookeeper making dozens of phone calls trying to straighten out the mistakes made by units that do the figuring on their own.
