  1. Get clear with your program chairman or DE exactly what the responsibilities are. Our district has redefined the normal BSA job descriptions and moved Cub Scout day camp and Boy Scout Camporee from Activities and Civic Service to Camp Promotion.
  2. A money-earning pancake breakfast for the community will help pay for the needs of the pack, such as awards.
  3. You did hear a rule book being cracked open. There is only "the uniform", and "not a uniform". Do a spaghetti dinner and a car wash to help pay for the materials and equipment and uniforms you need to run the pack.
  4. I've only been involved with Scouting a short time. What is a snfs?
  5. The issues you raise are well-covered in the Venturing Specific Training for adult leaders. You might want to sign up for it. You don't have to be a registered leader.
  6. As much as married couples may prefer to sleep together, if there is any hint of controversy, I wouldn't have any problem sleeping separate from my wife for a night or two. Of course I'm not under 21 and newly married any more.
  7. Here's a link to Cub Scout Fast Start training on the national web site: http://www.scouting.org/cubscouts/faststart/
  8. The Humane Society estimates that of the 8 million animals processed through shelters nationwide, 75% are not adopted. Shelters may be designed and set up to protect animals and find homes, but the defacto primary function is to kill them. The fact that there is a waiting period doesn't alter the final result. Its regrettable that our society cares so little about the pets we bring into this world. Arresting this man for shooting a puppy does nothing to help the problem.
  9. Please dont misinterpret my comments about the killing of a farm animal with a bullet. I am not supporting in any way what the man did. What he did was a poor solution to a problem that should not have been allowed to happen. If the man should be arrested and charged with a felony, it should be because he allowed his pet to produce unwanted offspring. That is the underlying moral crime. Death of unwanted animals is by far the most common result of irresponsible animal reproduction. We revile at the thought of Joe Citizen disposing of his own animal. Yet we establish government shelters whose primary function is to dispose of unwanted animals. Its clear that the killing is not what society objects to, but rather who it is that does the killing is what is objectionable. That kind of thinking makes no sense at all. The puppies are just as dead either way. The unwanted pet problem wont get solved as long as society focuses its outrage on who performs the execution rather than on preventing the problem in the first place. How about a little bit of outrage against irresponsible reproduction?
  10. If you take the hard line on this you may find that the boy/dad will retract his resignation and will re-commit to the program. Then he will quit the day after your event is over. You and your committee need to decide how much you don't want the boy to participate in the event.
  11. I'm not so sure how humane it would be to be locked up in a cage for 3 weeks waiting for death in the asphyxiation chamber. In my part of the country, farm animals raised for food by individual families are routinely killed with a bullet in the brain and no one is ever arrested and charged with a felony.
  12. "... he decided to shoot the 3-month-old shepherd-mix dogs in the head because he couldnt find them a home..." The real crime is breeding his dog without an advance plan for the results.
  13. Same here. Signing in again fixed it. Apparently my cookie got stale.
  14. Eagle projects are unique. It is required that the boy demonstrate leadership. The manner in which the boy demonstrates his leadership will be unique to his particular project. Judging a particular project involves looking at the entire project as a whole. If significant leadership is involved in obtaining funds and materials, that's fine. If the boy pays for everything out of his own pocket that could be OK too and he will demonstrate his leadership through other aspects of his project. If the boy meets the requirements stated in the workbook, the manner in which he meets them should not make any difference. To answer solmate's question, the rules are in the workbook.
  15. As Bob stated, most of the training materials are available from National Supply Division. The phone number is (800)323-0732. Scoutstuff.org has descriptions and prices for some, but not all, training materials. Do a search by item number. The Troop Committee Challenge training kit is #33643. The price is $20. It includes the syllabus, game pieces, and posters.
  16. I saw a couple this year but decided to X them off the list of keepers. There was just too much social distortion and bad religion.
  17. "...Their wireing doesn't always give them a grasp of social consequences..." I haven't met a kid yet that didn't have issues with grasping the concept of social consequences. It's part of growing up. Even as an adult, I still learn (again and again) the social consequences of things I say and do.
  18. Great idea about carrying a whistle. It could be included in the personal first aid kit. Was this boy carrying any of the "ten essentials"?
  19. Man and Woman are as different now as they have been since the beginning of time. And they're not different because backward thinking neanderthals have pushed men and women into different roles. We have different roles because that's simply the nature of the beast. Rooster, your analysis is perfect.
  20. Teach him how a successful businessman shakes hands.
  21. If the father says "no", that's it, end of story. Grandfathers have no rights beyond what the parents give them. The kid should not become a pawn in an argument between two adults.
