Wow, that's a lot of hats in one family! Watch out for burn out. Make sure you schedule some family time in there too. (BTW: My brother is in North Charleston)

You may have a problem with backing up at the more complex stations. Worse yet if you start the patrols out at different points to stagger the load. first wave gets right in and out, last wave has 10 min wait time. Not a problem until you score based on time. Timed events promote cutting corners and discourage teamwork and fair play.

Assure your son he experienced the best of the horses. There's a reason the merit badge isn't called horseback riding. It has a lot more to do with the two ends of the horse than it does with it's back.

Vandalism - Tagging the Scout Trailer

Like EagleDad said: oven cleaner. In our motorcycle club we use it to remove past owners art work when buying a used bike (Goldwing). Also good for removing names when keep the bike but changing the passenger (grin). Test first. -
Core characteristics of successful troops
frank10 replied to Beavah's topic in Open Discussion - Program
Want a successful troop, look for one with successful boys. It's the only real way to measure a troop. Just like uniforms and advancement, the troop is only a method not an end. Find a cross section of the boys in a troop and look to see how they are growing as scouts. If the boys think of themselves as scouts even when not at a scouting event then a troop is successful. If at the end of a little league game you can spot your scouts as the ones helping putting away the equipment then you run a successful troop. If you find your former scout taking up careers and trades rather than jobs. Military, public, religious and political service, well you see the trend here... If every boy know how to hike and camp there would still be a need for Scouts.(This message has been edited by wingnut) -

I don't need the insurance myth, I flat out tell the boys, my price for a seat in my van is a full uniform. Don't like it, get your mom to drive and I'll see you at he campout. Never forced a scout to wear the uniform, their mom's may have but not me. If enough scouts find their own way to camp, I could leave the van at home and ride the Goldwing.

234? Dang, seems like only last year it was only 200. I'm getting old.

Nasty e-mail from Scout parent
frank10 replied to AlamanceScouter's topic in Open Discussion - Program
It's the online electronic version of Road Rage... But worse. First folks are willing to go a bit farther in an email than they would in person and then anything looks harsher when written rather than spoken. Top that off with the fact that the person doing the writing can't see your face to see how it is affecting you. Chances are this person didn't intend to be half as harsh as they came across. Wait to see them in person to deal with them, you may find they aren't so bad after all. -
If you split them into two patrols you will find that for most events you will be combining them into a single acting patrol to which you will have to assign an acting PL. This kills the whole idea of the patrol and takes boy led with it too. Wait a bit longer and pull in a few more scouts before you make the split.

That's right, Every one picks on the U.P. until they need them. Where would you be next time you had a uniform emergency and if the uniform Police didn't respond? They put them self on the line every day for us and deserve our thanks. So let me be the first to say "Thank you U.P." (who ever you are.) (Blame my mother, she should have raised me better) But now to reply to the original question - Your local sport / trophy shop should be able to do it while you wait. Last time I priced it in my town, two lines was about $5. Or you could just hand him the shirt and have it stitched directly

Painted scouting logo all over it. Non stick on t ones that can be power washed off. Makes it harder to get repainted when all the body shops have seen your story in the local press. Will reduce the chance of theft in the first place since in most cases they are hoping to score construction or landscaping equipment not tents.

Pack212Scouter: Do you even get to know all their names?

I understand asking a scout to be responsible for his own meds, but I never understood the concept of letting him keep them in his possession. Bad enough when I have to deal with a stolen candy bar or missing flashlight. I want them under lock and key.

1) If a scout is coming to speak to me I will be in my Uniform even if the scout is not. 2) If I wanted to know what the SPL was thinking I would ask him on his time not mine. 3) Throw off the CC's meeting plan? Does the CC suck the fun out of every thing he touches? John B CC T115 Naugatuck CT edit - Oh, and I'd tell my son I'd understand why he was no longer interested in being SPL.(This message has been edited by wingnut)

Since you asked I will try to answer but hope you will understand that this is the way it looks from inside my unit to me.... Bringing the OA in is nothing but trouble for me. They will use up a meeting, cause an argument over election results, hurt feeling for scouts who might have made it in if only the election would have worked. Election of scouts who are barely able to look after themselves. Then when it's all over, they will take 1/4 of my unit away for a weekend disrupting the troop schedule. All of which might be worth it if they then did any follow thru but the next time I will hear from them is when they have their next membership push. At heart I am a unit scouter and the OA must convince me that they offer something that will enhance my unit. So far, the local chapter has not done that. Sorry if this seems harsh, but I think you wanted honest rather than polite.

Hi Jenny, I've been a Boy Scout leader for 25 years but next year my son will be a tiger. This will be my first contact with the cub program. I'm signed up to be his DL. Ask lots of questions so I can read the answers too. John B Waterbury CT

This won't help you in the least but... The fitting size is 1-20. But that's just the size not the style.

Ceremonies for scouts that are aging out
frank10 replied to ajscrm's topic in Open Discussion - Program
At exactly noon on Pete's 18 birthday the scout gathered around his tent, removed his gear from the patrol site and yelled "And don't come back". Still brings a tear to me eyes. But might not be what your looking for..
