As with most things in scouting, you have to make it so much fun that they beg you to let them do it... here's how we do it... http://www.onmyhonor.com/events0102/camp02/melon/index.htm Havn't seen anyone sit this one out yet.

Great speach... too bad he wasted it on the french.

In any job I ever had I can assure you that the management got full credit for any thing I ever did.

BG: I learned how to make babies in the second grade... (Change the y to I and add es.)
-
My take on it has always been intent... When you are shot with a paint ball or laser, "your dead". When you get shot with a squirt gun "your wet"... Can't say this is spelled out in the G2SS, but I never thought to question it before.
-
We still use them, but I have seen a few awkward times caused by scouts who had no one to give the pin to or a scout with too many parents.... Ahhh to go back to a simpler time (what ever that means.)

In the end, we are judged at all the levels by our program. And it's the boys (and their families) that do the judging. Good programs will bring them in, lack of program/training/camping/you-get-the-idea will keep them away. Problems enter in when the boys/$$ start to walk and the adults look for excuses rather than beefing up the program.

Ahh yes, the clasic combo - Swim suit by Speedo, body by budweiser It aint pretty.
-
Well, don't they have any camps they can sell?
-
Eagle69: "You go from worrying about program and the boys to worrying about the number of boys, number of units and how much money you need to raise." I think that's why so many DE's fail at their jobs. If they spent more time looking at the program then the numbers would take care of them selves. (But that's another topic)

Around here you better have a well paid wife if you want to live indoors and eat warm food on that kind of pay.

I like #1 and #2. There is a lot of good that troops can do but some don't know how to get it going or how much good it can do for the scouts to be part of something larger than the troop.
-
If the local OA can't get their act togeather enough to send an election team as scheduled, I wouldn't bother having the election at all. Why bother sending your best scouts to a weak program.

And? Are you waiting for us to say thank you? -
fgoodwin, I'd say we do at least half our recruting from "Bring a friend" events. we're doing ok, it's just hard when you try to invite a family to look at the troop and they let you know they already tried scouting in 3rd grade and it wasn't for them. At that time I turn on the charm and try to explaine that the Boy scouts are diferant than the cubs but in most cases it's too late. I'm glad to hear other packs are doing it right but as it says on the post card "Wish you were here!"
-
Way I understand it is the purpose of Cub Scouting is to be sure our troops are never over loaded with boys... you see, they take 40 first graders, turn them into 20 second graders 10 third graders, 5 fourth graders and then blame us for not retaining the two who cross over in fifth grade. (said with a smile, but...)

Lets not forget items that use the same word but diferent spelling... tire color honor

I'm a fan of one family one position. We all know that in the end "one job" never stays that way, so if you start with a family team there is a built in back up to help cary the load.

Most committees don't vote, they more beat it to death until every one either agrees or at least determins they can put up with what the others want... Sounds to me like your best position would be Assistant SM.

A simple tag line is fine with me. Any more than that just slows things down.

Welcome Dave. I can only address #5... I am a long time fan of Curtis S. Read Scout Reservation. All three camps with in the reservation work togeather to insure a great time for your entire troop. Summit base is a great place to start any number of treks of any number of days. They are willing to get right into it with you and set up a custom plan to fit your troop. Our troop has done tupper lake- long lake (afloat), friends have done the wilderness areas (L.N.T. to the max) other have done over night in the caves of Chimney mountain. Or you can mix and match. (or go for a pre canned trip if you don't care to do the planning.) Best of all, your younger scouts can stay at one of the other two camps in the reservation enjoying a great summer camp with all the normal stuff plus WW rafting, horses (10 most years), caves (wet and dry)... Well, you get the idea... you can see more of our past base camp fun at http://www.onmyhonor.com/events0102/camp02/ http://www.onmyhonor.com/events0001/scamp01/ (This message has been edited by wingnut)

I'd see it as the same as a christmas visit to the home... It may help out the rec staff, but your doing it for the paitients. The putting green is being done for the residents not for the home admin's. I think of it as the nursing home allowing the scout to use their land for his project.
