  1. Hotdesk we need more information. Is this the extent of the planning you have done? If so you need to get working. -Will your scouts have enough time to build shelters? -Do your scouts know how to build shelters, if not how long will you take to train them? -Depending on where you live will it be snowing? -What equipment will you have? -Do you have a person who can teach the merit badge? Good luck on this trip, and remeber to have fun. F.S.
  2. SPLT_15 I'm an under 18 youth in the BSA. Attending the University of South Florida as a duel enroled student. Only God knows how I find time for scouts. sst_3rd No your not alone most troops I've seen do what you do. F.S.
  3. Well, If you mean my troop: 1 campout each month - 10 in tents - 1 in motels - 1 in summer camp tents Some of our most of exciting are - 1 summer camp - 1 snow ski trip (Quite a feat in the sunshine state) - 1 crossover weekend - 1 campboree - 1 trip to a local ranch horseback riding - 1 'advancment weekend' merit badge workshops, first campout after crossover. If you mean me: Three or four a month - Venture Crew event - Flaming Arrow Scout Reservation Minicamp staff (a mini summer campish event one a month) - Troop activity - Order of the Arrow event - I will be working 7 weeks at Flaming Arrow this summer - Not really 'camping' but one weak after summer camp this year NOAC Note : I do not attend all these events I still have this magical thing called a social life, and school.... 5. Im surprised on how many troops have troop tents. Most of the scouts in our troop buddy up in a private tent, I personaly have a Kelty Vortex 2 that I use on most campouts, but all scouts and parents are made aware that we have a stock of troop tents. The tents are four person colemans, I belive we got donated from a sporting goods store that was closing in our area.
  6. Wow this topic came up at just the right time. Our venture crew is doing a station at our council camporee called the highland games, where we will be wearing grey utlikilts with an embroierd Venture "V". On a side note, we voted 12-0 not to wear them in the scottish mannor F.S.
  7. One of the boys in my troop asked me for an opinion on the Civil Air Patrol program compared to scouting, after a community event where our troop and a local Flight? (I don't remeber the terminolgy) had booths near each other. I told him I diden't have much experince in that program but I would do some reasearch for him. So what do you think about the CAP? Personaly, I found them slightly arrogent, telling off two or three scouts for no real reason, But I diden't want to influence this kid to my outlook without getting a few more opinions. Thanks, F.S.
  8. Thank you, I have spoken to my SPL and the ASPL in private with. They told me that they did not even know what they were doing wrong and from now on they will try to lead more then in the past. Thanks for all your help. FloridaScout
  9. Hello, I am a scout in a troop That when I joined was one of the most respected in the council, but one that now has a large problem. Our SPL, and most of the older boys are, quite frankly, useless idiots. Now this may sound harsh but the fact is SPL shows up to two meetings out of four, out of uniform, and a half hour late. Then at the meeting he talks loudly with his extreamly elitest group of friends, creating a distraction , and then has the gall to and leave early! Due to this SPL we have almost toatly stoped PLCs and has been thrown out the window. I have been told about an ASM who said the most hated sentence in the english languadge "I gave up on helping these boys." Now this has been going on for about 3 years and the only way for things to change in this troop is for new boys, who have watched this type of leadership since they joined, is to take control. But without the example or training (we haven't had a proper JLT in about two years)they will just continue the cycle. If nothing is done this 55 year old troop will go under in a about 2-3 years. I ask all of you for advice on what I can do to improve the troop. YIS F. Scouter
