"1. The prettier the patch the greater the trading value, the higher the praise, the greater the glory. A little ribbon hung neatly over a button tells people nothing of the person underneath." A pretty patch tells people nothing of the person underneath. "7. The BSA would have to look at other sources of revenue. This act of taking away the OA flap might generate a new flap over, where is the dough?" Probably the most valid point of all. "10. What is the real worth of a patch?" Since they don't make good bandages or fire starters, they have little real worth.

"You will see the term "assistant Scoutmaster" with the "a" small and the "S" capitalized. That is the official style and the review is for consistency in that vein." Interesting, I had not noticed that before. It seems that there could be great significance to the small "a."

Tents? We sleep in tents? That's what they call "lodgings" in the literature?

" If the mandatory Venture transfer is true (it does correspond with what I have seen), then it is a likely contributing factor (cause?) of the rank option." That's why I was wondering about the Mormon influence in Scouting 50 or more years ago. Sea Scouts could work on all Boy Scout ranks back in the 20's. Explorer Scouts could work toward Eagle in the 30's. The tradition/policy has continued through the current incarnation of the program, Venturing.

"Hypothetical: If the BSA were to blindside us all . . ." Sorry, Bob White has declared all discussion of hypothetical BSA futures to be null and void.

"Did "All creatures great and small" have anything to do with Dr. James Herriot?" That was the first of the series. I read the entire series and assumed that they were autobigraphical. Imagine my surprise when he died and I learned that his name wasn't Herriot and the stories were made up. :-(

"Please excuse a bit of wet-blanketude here, but why exactly is this funny? Because someone appointed themselves to commit an assault in the name of God?" I didn't find it funny, I found it inspirational and motivational. Perhaps God spoke to the Marine and said, "Thump that dude and thump him hard!"

Sad Story - a scout lost - question for Mike Long

" I don't know about Florida but pennsylvania has fluroscent orange requirments when hunting deer" Deer seasons often have different requirements than other seasons. -
The other day johnsned said, " I only think that people who are nitpicking, child harrassing, rule spouters are such," So you find fault with those who expect a Scout to actually cook a meal or build a fire? Hey, the rules say that you can't earn advancement or merit badges after you turn 18 BUT Johnny worked really, really hard on that last merit badge, so what if he finished it when after he turned 18, let's give it to him and promote him to Life as well. Sure the book says that the Scouts should elect their SPL and PLs but what do they know? After all, they're just kids. I'll appoint the PLs and the SPL.

Sad Story - a scout lost - question for Mike Long

"They were hunting hogs????" Down south, pig hunting is a popular activity. I have a friend who hunts wild pigs with a spear. "The kid was wearing a black cap???? What a totally stupid," Yep. Also stupid was not knowing where other members of his party were and not being sure of his target. The father will suffer daily torment, a living hell that I wouldn't wish on Osama Bin Laden. -
How about we stop stop answering questions about problems within units? Advice and opinions are presented as such and it is up to the recipient to decide what to do with them.
-
"I also have to wonder whether this may also be influenced by the way the LDS Church arranges its Scouting program." Were the Mormons as powerful force in Scouting 50 years ago as they are today?
-
"As a Venture Crew Committee Member, I agree that Boy Scout Advancement has no place in Venturing," As Bob White might say, those who make the decision obviously feel differently. Boy Scout advancement was part of the Explorer Scout/Exploring/Explorer/Venturing program since its inception. I don't think that girls or women belong in any BSA program above Cub Scouts but that's not the way the program exists today so I just have to suffer during estrogen laden campouts.

"Like I posted before, the humor impaired didn't get it!" Humor reflects the tastes and beliefs of those that find it funny. Ethnic jokes are funny to bigots. Cracking on those that think that the uniform is important shows that you think that the uniform in unimportant.

praypub.org is a good place to start. It is important to note that the religious awards are not a BSA program but are a BSA recognized program. Each religion can set the standards for their own awards. Most, if not all, of the the Protestant religions use the "God and Family" program. Roman Catholics have their own as do Jews, Orthodox Christians, Buddists, Momorms and so on.
-
"I know exactly what I posted. It was a JOKE!! You know what that is right?" However, jokes usually reveal the true attitude of the joke teller. As others have said, if we give on the uniform method, why not let advancement slide. Hey, if advancement goes, let's make the outdoor program into a lecture series with slides of trees. Patrols? Who needs them. Where do you draw the line?

"..if the Scout does not want to wear the flap, he just needs to quit paying his Lodge dues." I think that you're joking. The issue isn't his membership in OA, he just doesn't want to wear the flap. All this talk about nomination brought up another question. I thought that there was time requirement before an adult could be nominated but last year, our newly minted female DE was "called out." Is this one of those political exceptions?
-
"Then why have CSPs? I know what council I'm in." So that people will have something to trade at Jamborees?
-
"There are reasons behind the policy of having female leaders on outings with female members and many of those reasons are things the female venturer will probably not want to discuss or have seen by her father." Rampant sexism, that's all it is. No one cares about the things that a boy doesn't want to discuss with a woman who isn't his mother.
-
I've read something that said that we should attempt to keep our uniforms as uncluttered as possible but yet BSA keeps adding patches to the uniform. Why is the OA flap needed at all? Membership in OA can be shown by the nifty little arrow on a ribbon. What lodge a person is in can be deduced, in most cases, by their CSP.

"If anyone says that official BSA uniform socks are not the most cost effective and highest quality option available, let him be anathema." BSA wool socks are $11.50 a pair. I was at Costco today and found an even better bargain. 75% Merino Wool sock, 3 pairs for $9 AND they had them in a size that would fit my son.

" not all Crew members are eligible for membership is a "Chief" beef of mine." Not all Boy Scouts are eligible. TP said, "Hijack, nah, natural segway!!!" Do you mean "segue"?
-
"I never heard about the no flag for religious reasons, either! Do tell!" Yep, there are some religions that won't wear the flag.

"Scouting has done a better job of keeping current than Morse did." However, the US Navy still teaches and uses both Morse code and semaphore. Evidently it is still relevant in the world. My radical opinion is that the signalling requirement was eliminated because it was "too hard." Most rquirements for 1st class can be completed in a day or on a single campout. However, signalling takes days to master.
