  1. Ed, the United States isn't "in" America. The United States IS America. When the French asked soldiers, "Are you American?" they didn't mean "Are you Canadian?" or "Are you Venezulean?"
  2. OGE stated, " Neither has indicated that men are pariahs on the camp-outs that THEY attend." Ask them where the men MUST pitch their tents. ScouterPaul asked, "Do 2 wrongs make a right?" Who siad that the girl Scouts were wrong? I'm just poining out that no one questions the GSUSA policy as vocally as they oppose BSA policies. ScouterPaul continued, "Do you treat the youth in your unit with the same amount of disrespect that you have shown Firstaider?" Not if they keep a civil tongue in their heads. TP, thank you.
  3. Pay for good grades? Why not? My kids don't get an allowance. We give them credit for chores, good deeds, good grades, etc. and then take away points for things like not doing homework, lying, fighting, etc.. Every couple of weeks, we tally the points and pass out the money. I do think that giving a kid $20 for an A is a bit extreme.
  4. First Aid dude sniveled, "Why's it really matter how old I am if I am right?" You see, the problem is that you have't lived long enough to be rude to me. TTFN. Sturgen opined, "As a 19 yr old scouter I may face the same criticism as firstaider" Not if aren't a rude, snot faced punk. Bobo White asserted, "The mission of scouting is not to turn boys into men." Not just men, good men. The Scoutmaster's Handbook says, "You are involved in one of the most important and meaningful endeavors of all -- that of turning boys into good men." OT Claimed, "First, on the issue of males as Girl Scout leaders, Girl Scouts actual dont have a problem with it, normally, however, the Girl Scouts would like to see a female leader also." Not quite right. They don't like to see a female leader "also," they require a female leader. A man cannot be the primary leader of a troop and men are treated as pariahs on campouts.
  5. I find it interesting that GSUSA makes a big deal about having women as leaders to present a positive role model but BSA is PC and only wants "adults" as role models. I also find it interesting that women seem to want to get involved in men's activities but you rarely seem men clamoring to get into a women's school, gym or club. FirsrAider dude I was going to comment on your snotty, punk, teenaged mouth but I'll refrain from doing so.(This message has been edited by Fat Old Guy)
  6. Bob White, I'm shocked. The American Flag is not required.
  7. "For some reason though, no one seems to want to get rid of the Football or Basketball team because some kids don't make the starting lineup." Yeah but many schools have gone with "no cut" policies which results in basketball teams of 30 and overweight girls with no dancing ability on the Pom Squad.
  8. Drip coffee? I might as well have one of those "Coffee presses" loved by the Starbucks crowd. I like my beat up percolator.
  9. I guess that I'm pretty simple minded because I figured the whole thing out about 40 years ago when I was in the second grade. God created the world and gave everything a push and let nature take over. If you mix two chemicals together to make plastic, your actions stop when you combine A with B but much goes on after that initial action but we still say that you made the plastic. We are a grand experiement and God watches, sometimes laughing and othertimes crying.
  10. "The connection I was trying to make was that in Farenheit 451 society had gotten to a point that anything considered offensive to anyone was not permitted.?" Sounds like Canada.
  11. "This may be a little off, but why is grandma sewing the badges on, does the kid not have fingers?" That is a question that I ask on a regular basis. My son sews his patches on his uniform as does my daughter. However, many a mom just rolls her eyes when I suggest that junior do his own sewing. Then again, my wife thinks that I'm an ogre for making my kids sew their own patches on their uniforms. Something else that I don't understand is why people will put a patch on crooked and not fix it. I use a T-square and a ruler to get my patches on straight but I'm often foiled by BSA's wonderful uniforms that have pockets on crooked and sleeves that aren't symetrical.
  12. New Jersey Dude, that's what you lawyers believe but in Civics class they taught me that the legislative branch made the laws. When you can show me that the Courts are part of the Congress, I'll buy your explanation.
  13. I did some research on this issue a while back when a fellow Scouter sent me the story. As I recall, the Carson thing never happened and Marvin never won the Navy Cross.
  14. Fuzzy Bear said, "We really do need a lot more policing for all of the stuff in Scouting." How true. The Ideals Well, we know that he beats up younger kids at school and doesn't help out at home but we shouldn't "punish" him for that. The Patrol Method The boys really don't know what they should be doing so I'll TELL them. The Outdoors Hike? Camp? Surely you jest. Advancement Okay, so he doesn't know how to tie a bowline but we'll advance him so he doesn't feel left out. Association with Adults Bicker, lie, cheat Personal Growth See ideals Leadership Development See Patrol method The Uniform What the heck, it's only Scouts.(This message has been edited by Fat Old Guy)
  15. "Ed, you don't understand current constitutional law. I am not going to educate you" That's good because, unless you've been lying, you aren't qualified to do that. It is interesting that you use the phrase, "current constitutional law" because the pertinent part of the Constitution hasn't changed in . . . what . . . about 200 years and the Constitution is, by definition, the highest law of the land. What the supreme court hands down are not laws but interpretations and those interpretations change with the wind. To understand the law, you have to read what the framers wrote, not what someone writes 200 years later. Now, go away.
  16. According to his obit, the Kangaroo part came form the capacious pockets on his jacket.
  17. Well Merlyn, since you never took the Cub Scout Oath, you were never really a Cub Scout. We thank you for your donations but please stop telling people that you were a Cub Scout.
  18. Stapler Guy, u r write on both countz. [sic, sic, sic, and sic]
  19. As a member of the Uniform Police, I would say that 90% of all uniform errors, in particular patch mis-placement, result from not caring. What? How dare you say that? Grandma sewed the patches on and she didn't know any better! Simple, if Grandma didn't know where the patches went and didn't bother to ask, she didn't care enough to find out where they went. On the other hand, if Grandma asks the Scoutmaster and he gives her bad gouge, that's another story but maybe that shifts the blame to the Scout. If the Scout cared, he'd have given the handbook to Grandma and shown her the diagrams but that isn't any guarantee. We have a Scout whose mom is a retired Army officer. When her son joined she asked me where all the patches went. I showed her the diagrams in the book and gave her a copy of the uniform inspection sheet. Did she get it right? Not hardly. There's a three inch gap between the CSP and the troop number and the quality unit patch is above the right pocket. I would have thought that a retired Army officer would have paid more attention to the uniform. Then we have the people who KNOW that something is wrong but do it anyway. The 50 year old guys that I see wearing Tiger Cub service stars are a good example. I've asked a couple about it and they say that they know it is wrong but they want to show that they were involved with Tiger Cubs. There's a dad involved with my troop that insists on wearing all of his "parent pins" on his uniform. Actually, I see many parents doing that. Why? Because they don't want to wear the pins on their "Civilian clothes" and don't care that it isn't proper on their uniforms. Am I 100% accurate all of the time? Nope. I have a 3/8" gap between my troop number and CSP. When my son was a new Cub Scout he had an experienced shirt and I blindly sewed his new CSP and pack number on where the old ones had been. I also have to admit that from time to time I wear a WOSM belt buckle. Why? It looks neat and I just don't care.
  20. So Merlyn, neither you nor your mother found it hypocritical to pledge to do a duty to God when you believe that God doesn't exist?
  21. "Where did you go to college? I want to send my kids there." Fergle University, home of the Raging Pachyderms.
  22. "If lucky, FOG would only be fined or incarcerated for his "hate speech."" Fortunately, I don't live in Canada.
  23. TP, if I had meant "Mormons," I would have said, "The Latter Day Saints of Jesus Christ." The Momorms are a little known cult that comes from Transalpine Gaul and pre-date the invasion of Christianity by at least 2,000 years. Scoutldr is right, they do practice an ancient ritual of beagle eating and are responsible for the term "hot dog" being applied to sausage. Their religious medal is known as "Me and you and a beagle named boo."
  24. I was at Target again today (sometimes I think that my wife owns the place) and they had single mantle propane lanterns on clearance for about $5. I didn't buy a lantern but I did get a toaster for a propane stove for 99 cents.
