I believe that anyone may become the "Clothes Closet Coordinator," registered or unregistered. Why turn down help? However, there are benefits to having registered adults. A registered adult is required on all troop outings. So if the Clothes Closet Coordinator is heading to the local thrift shop to pick up some uniforms that they are holding for her and wants to take a contingent with her, being registered means that she can take her girl friend who isn't registered for company. We have a group of parents that do camping trip driving and pick-up on a regular basis. I'm not about to tell them that they have to pay for the privelege in addition to buring rubber off their tires.

Different Handbooks - Different Kids??
Fat Old Guy replied to Eamonn's topic in Open Discussion - Program
"OTOH, signalling with flags in the bandwidth era is about the same as making Longaberger baskets ... an extreme niche skill." What do you do when the cell towers are down? What about when you are out of range of those silly little FRS radios? The Navy still teaches flashing light and semaphore. "Also OTOH, the first aid I learned is not "best technique" available. Witness salt tablets" I dunno about that. I've spent too much time in hot environments and I've seen too many people keel over because they didn't take in enough salt. In any case, you sound like Bobo Blanco. He yaps constantly about First Aid. In his mind, the old handbooks are horrible because they don't include CPR. It never occurred to him that first aid could be updated and the information about stars, tracking and history could be left in. -
" Before he comes back, you should know it's Catholic, not catheolic." And there's Roman Catholic, Orthodox Catholic, Greek Catholic, Polish National Catholic, and the ever popular Roman Catholic of the Eastern Rite.

The product is the race, which to a runner is a valuable commodity. I wouldn't go forward with it because it sounds like your market is getting saturated and the return isn't that great. If you do want to have race, look for something different like a tri-athalon or a marathon. "The Annual Guam Boy Scout Marathon"

"BTW, I was wrong to characterize the passing from a "We'll Be Loyal Scouts" Scout to a loyal Scout as an upgrade. What was I thinking? How condescending of me.. One more question, though. Are the ranks within a program greater and lesser or are they merely different, too?" Boy Scouts cannot be an upgrade from Cub Scouts or Webelos because they are different programs for different age groups. They are stepping stones along the same trail. To imply that one is an upgrade, means that the other has less value and probably should have been skipped if possible. You raise a good question about ranks. I question if they should even be called ranks. A Life Scout has no more power and commands no more respest than a Tenderfoot just by virtue of his rank. Perhaps we should call them awards.

Historical Figures as Scoutmasters

Helicopter or Beaver. He's historic in that he's a modern actor who doesn't get involved in politics. I'm still waiting for Streisand to leave the country. -
Don't encourage them to buy it too big. I see too many parents buy a kid that should be in a Youth Small and Adult Small so "he can grow into it." The poor kid swims in it. Encourage them to buy one size large and swap shirts with someone else when their kids outgrows his.

I don't care about the pat on the back either, I'm on record as only doing this stuff for the paycheck. My DE promises that it is in the mail.

Harrison Ford drinks to excess and is a philanderer. -
" We all "deserve" a pat on the back. But I don't want one." Sure you do. We all do. We all like it when you bust your tail and people say, "Hey, you did a good job."

Jesus wound up as a convicted felon and sentenced to death. Moses rebelled against a legally constituted governement and stole thousands of slaves. -
Should A Dead Beat Dad be a Unit Leader?
Fat Old Guy replied to matuawarrior's topic in Issues & Politics
"there are a number of pusks. I am first because I begot them." So am I to infer that your father was/is not a pusk? " By the way, the District of Columbia does have a representative in Congress - Eleanor Holmes-Norton." Just goes to show how little that you know. I believe that her proper title is Delegate, not Representative, and she has no vote. DC has neither Representatives nor Senators. That's why their license plates say, "Taxation Without Representation." Would you want Ben Franklin as a Scouter? Not just a traitor but an adulterer of the first order. SHameful. -
inappropriate behavior by a Scout
Fat Old Guy replied to committeechair's topic in Working with Kids
Despite what Bobo says, it is true that "boys will be boys" but it isn't always or even usually true that a boy's behavior is indicative of his behavior as an adult. How many of the rambunctious and obnoxious boys that we knew grew up to become responsible pillars of the community. How many shy and retiring but well behaved kids have grown up to become serial killers. The class bully from my grade school grew up to become a minister. What form did the "touching" take? Was it a caress? There was a jock in my high school that would converstionally mention that he'd been working on his deltoids then ask, "you wanna feel it?" If you did, he'd flick his wrist and smack you in the crotch. I suppose that was "inappropriate touching" but no more sinister than a Dutch rub. BTW, that fellow grew up to become a lawyer. We live in a society that over reacts to everything. In days gone by, when boys were allowed to be boys, if you didn't like someone touching you, you pounded him. Lines were drawn and a hierarchy was established. Now common sense has left the building with Elvis and the authorities have to get involved with their experts and specialists who find sinister motives in everyone's actions. The next thing that we know, one Scout giving another a wedgie with be cause to call the authorities. -

Should A Dead Beat Dad be a Unit Leader?

First pusk (what is a pusk and is there a second one?), I didn't realize that you had raised an question that I needed to resond to. I looked back and still haven't seen one. "These folks all tried to fight injustice." Injustice is in the eye of the beholder. The crown didn't think that GW was fighting injustice. GW was a tax evader and a traitor. " As I recall, the crown tax Americans without representation" The District of Columbia has no representation in Congress but they are taxed. Should they take up arms against the government? Many people thought that Rosa Parks was wrong. Was she right simply because you think that she was right? The Union was right because they won. My friend's friend thinks that he is fighting injustice. Is he wrong simply because you disagree with him? If you want to use the Scout Law, you can't start making exceptions.(This message has been edited by Fat Old Guy) -
What type of boy is the Cubscout program looking for?
Fat Old Guy replied to Its Me's topic in Cub Scouts
We had one that Cub Scouts could have helped but it was better to get rid of him than put others at risk. He was very smart, an only child and had older parents, they were in their 60s. Their reaction to anything untoward that he did was to smile and say, "It's a phase." He thought that everything that we did was "lame." Even though he could have probably earned awards at a prodigious rate because of his intelligence, he didn't want to because they were "lame." He was disruptive. He was a bully. He'd physically assault other kids. The Den Leader tried but the parents reacted to the discussion about their child's behavior by pulling him out of Cubs. -

So, FirstPusk who is to decide if laws should be disobeyed? None of examples are people who worked within their respective systems to change the laws. George Washington was a traitor to his country. You probably wouldn't want Ollie North or G. Gordon Liddy as Scouters and they aren't even traitors. Geo. Washington is no different than the wackos in Michigan who are preparing for WW III except that he was successful in his attempt to kick out the legally constituted government. The courage of Rosa Parks and the underground Scouts is irrelevant. They were breaking the law of the time and not working within the system to get the laws changed. What about the draft dodgers of the 60s and 70s? Are they to be admired for their courage? I guess that what you are saying is that Scouts should obey the law except when they think that they shouldn't. -

A big problem with fundraising -- motivation

"Some parents liked the idea, but others just looked at me like I was from another planet. Boys taking financial responsibility??? You must be joking." Those are the same kids who get deep into debt after college and expect dad to bail them out so they can buy a new BMW. -

First Pusk and others say, "If he thinks these rules and laws are unfair, he tries to have them changed in an orderly manner rather than disobeying them." Where the Scouts who went into hiding in Europe during WW II and secretly supported the Allied invasion bad Scouts? Would George Washington have been a good Scout leader? What about Rosa Parks? They both flagrantly violated the law of the land. Buffalo . . . that's what's so great about this country and why it isn't Canada. You are free to disagree with me even when I'm right. -

Kentucky Eagle (hmmmm . . . sounds like a Neil Diamond song , There's the problem, we don't have many kids whose parents don't buy them the luxury items. The kids want for nothing and the parents see no reason that the kids should work for anything. -
Should A Dead Beat Dad be a Unit Leader?
Fat Old Guy replied to matuawarrior's topic in Issues & Politics
" I believe it sends a negative message (to the children)if a parent refuses to meet their obligation of child support regardless of the amoun" I have a friend whose parents were divorced over 40 years ago. Dad paid his child support on time and has met with his son once a year for lunch once a year. My friend has never met his step-mother, step-brothers or even his half-brother. He has never been in his father's house. Who is the better father? The fellow who doesn't write a check because the receipients don't need the money but loves his kids and is involved with them or the father who wrote the monthly check but had little else to do with his son? -

"Even if it is $5.00 a week, an obligation is an obligation." If it makes no difference, why bother? -
"OK realworld, by the book whatever you want to call it,here is where your trouble began. Volunteers can't "move" a unit. It is not theirs to move." Bobo Blanco, you get caught up in semantics but then chastise others for doing the same. I'm sure that they didn't "move" the unit. We all know that units don't "move." Some units died and the former members who wanted to stay involved in Scouting found a new CO. I'm sure that the District team for starting new units got involved and all the right paperwork was signed. I'm sure that the CO had no intention of doing anything other than providing a basement. Is this ideal? No but I'm sure that there are many units that wouldn't exist without COs like this. In fact the CO for my Troop has done little more than provide us with a meeting hall for about 20 years.
