  1. Does not our organizational "requirement" of a religious duty require us to be a religious organization? No! Buckner let's one get through his legs!
  2. I would say yes Merlyn. The BSA is a youth organization with religious requirements!
  3. Hey parts is parts & if you can MIX and MATCH anything from the old with the new that means anything!
  4. Community Interfaith Service Committee is a religious organization. It's run and supported by churches. The BSA is not a religious organization. You don't have to be a member of a religious group to join it.
  5. Where do you get this 'anything'? The only wording I've seen refers to 'parts' of the uniform being 'mix and match'. To me, parts of a uniform consist of things like pants, shirt, belt, socks, hat, NOT insignia. You posted it! "the new uniform is Transitional and you can MIX and MATCH anything from the old with the new." Where did you get 'parts'? Aren't the unit numerals 'part' of the uniform? Aren't the shoulder loops 'part' of the uniform? Isn't the shirt 'part' of the uniform? Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10
  6. "the new uniform is Transitional and you can MIX and MATCH anything from the old with the new." when they speak of 'mix and match' its clear they mean uniform parts (shirt, pants, belt, socks), NOT insignia. Anything, to me, means anything! Patches, pants, shirt, socks, unit numbers, council strips! Anything!

  8. Not the same as your post on Saturday, 9/13/2008: 4:42:19 PM. You comparison in not valid! Here we go Steelers!
  9. OK so First Day School class is a Sunday school class! Then sure it is a religion! Still not the same.
  10. From what I have heard & read, the new & old uniform parts can be worn together so you can wear which ever you please!
  11. If the learner has not learned...then the teacher has not taught Not sure I agree with this. If this is true, why doesn't everyone pass every class in school? Putting the onus solely on the teacher isn't fair or accurate. The learner has the obligation to attempt to learn. Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10
  12. This one is a big part of the problem. "Okay Johnny, cross the ropes, now bring one around and over the other and tuck it through. Yea! You just tied a square knot, I'll sign your book." I wouldn't consider that demonstrate. To me, demonstrate means you show someone how it's done. Someone walking you through it step by step isn't demonstrating, that's following instructions. Not the same thing. Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10
  13. If it says demonstrate, the Scout must demonstrate! Does the Scout have to be an expert at the task? No. Just be able to demonstrate the task. If it says repeat from memory, the Scout must memorize! If the Scout doesn't have it memorized, does he pass because he got close? No. If it says explain, the Scout must explain! Is it required for the Scout to write a paper? Only if the Scout feels this will help him explain better. If it says identify, the Scout must identify! Does the Scout have to actually show someone something? No. Just verify he has identified what the requirement wants him to identify. If it says participate, the Scout must participate! Does this mean the Scout must pass? No just participate. If it says complete, the Scout must complete! Does this mean it's OK for the Scout to get most of it done? No. Complete means the whole thing. If it says visit, the Scout must visit! Does this mean the Scout can read about it on the internet? No. He actually has to get off his duff & go! If it says tell, the Scout must tell! Does this mean the Scout can write a paper because he doesn't like to talk in front of people. No.
  14. If it says demonstrate, the Scout must demonstrate! If it says repeat from memory, the Scout must memorize! If it says explain, the Scout must explain! If it says identify, the Scout must identify! If it says participate, the Scout must participate! If it says complete, the Scout must complete! If it says visit, the Scout must visit! If it says tell, the Scout must tell! Basic, no! I'm gonna wait to see where this goes before I elaborate! Oh and Beav, no merit badges are required for a Scout to be 1st Class! Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10
  15. So First Day School class is a Sunday school class????? Ya lost me & never answered my question SSScout.
  16. Hardline partyliners are almost as bad as bigots! Can't see past the nose on their face!
  17. We had a Scout in our unit many years ago who never got past 2nd Class & aged out! Had no interest in advancing! Loved the program & what we did as a unit & was very active! Great kid just no interest in completing any of the requirements! Bob makes an excellent point when he states some scouts simply work at a different pace than others. I would take this one step further & state all Scouts work at their own pace. Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10
  18. GW, I was the advancement chair myself for a few years. We only had 15 Scouts so my job was a little easier than yours. I kept track of all partial MB's as well as completed MB,s, rank advancement, night camping, OA membership, etc. It was a bear to build but easy to maintain once it was built! Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10
  19. Yeah I know GW. And that is frustrating! Isn't the Scout's handbook his own personal record of his advancement? Shouldn't the Advancement Chair have the official records? What happens when the Scout loses his book & nothing is signed? Does he fail his BOR? If I was on the BOR, providing we were able to verify this Scout had completed all his rank requirements & everything else was in order, I would have passed him. NeilLup, Your scenario 1 is a farce! This has nothing to do with fitness. Yeah he forgot his book. Apparently not having his book is more important that what he knows since he didn't pass his BOR. Not a good thing!
  20. You are correct NeilLup when you state We're not in this Scouting business to give out badges or to produce Eagle Scouts. We're in it to improve citizenship, character and fitness. How is requiring a Scout to bring his handbook to a BOR improving citizenship, character & fitness? There is no requirement that a Scout bring his handbook to a BOR. And what if he brings it & there is nothing signed yet he has completed all the requirements for rank? Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10
  21. SSScout, How is participating in "First Day School class and learns about his birth-right faith" a religion? Sounds like a school class like World Religions to me & a school class ain't a religion. Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10
  22. Not sure the Scout's book is required. If your Advancement Chair is worth their salt, they will have the Scouts current advancement records which would preclude the need for the book. Did they give your son the reason for denial in writing as required? When I was the AC of our unit, I asked the Scout to bring his book. I always had his up-to-date advancement records so if he didn't bring his book it wasn't a deal killer. I don't think there should be an appeal! Have your son schedule another BOR & bring his book! This BOR should take all of 5 minutes to verify he has or hasn't met the requirements for rank. Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10
  23. SSScout, Having religious elements to your membership requirements doesn't make an organization a religious organization.
  24. I read comic books & listened to music! Loved the Fantastic 4 & KQV! I was still outside every chance I could get. If no one was around I'd get out my football & practice my kicking! Or toss a tennis ball off the back wall of my house! You would very seldom find me in front of the TV or reading comics on a nice day! TV time & comic reading was for when there was nothing else to do! It seems today it's just the opposite.
  25. My guys use to love a good game of touch football!
