Yes they did OGE!

Don't concern yourself with the opinions of Judeo-Christian supremacists. This is an extremely inflammatory post & should be removed & the poster sanctioned.

Do you always worry about things that haven't happened and may not ever happen? With all the possible things that could encompass how would you ever get anything else accomplished? Don't you ever stop trying to divert the discussion away from the real issue? NJ has a valid point! Once again, the BSA's wording leaves this open to each council & district! Not a good thing!

Inability to meet the height/weight limit does not mean you cannot be a volunteer in the BSA programs. It only means that you will not be allowed to risk your welfare or the welfare of others by participating in High Adventure activities. That is not a bad thing. The interesting part of this post is It only means that you will not be allowed to risk your welfare or the welfare of others by participating in High Adventure activities. Correct me if I'm wrong, but this form is to be used for all Scouters & Scouts for all events, correct? It does seem the section regarding the chart of the normal & fat people is meant to be used for high adventure, but the following statement from the form would indicate this should be applied to all BSA activities. Enforcing the height/weight limit is strongly encouraged for all other events, but it is not mandatory. So unless Mr. White is the official spokesman for the BSA regarding this I would be wary.

Medical science & behavior are two completely different things!

The requirements are listed for each rank. That is what must be completed by each Scout to advance. The rest of the book is nothing more than reference material to be used if the Scout wants to. The requirements are not redefined in the rest of the handbook! Everything anyone reads is an interpretation, the very act of reading is one of interpretation. That does not mean that there are not correct and incorrect interpretations to everything. Excellent point, Bob. So why are all of your interpretations correct?

NJ, If you actually expect Bob to apologize for anything, well, you know. Bob is never wrong!
-
Penguins ain't humans so what ever they do has no bearing on whether humans should do it or not! And to think so is absurd!
-
Bob is correct about the requirement. Reading the entire handbook is a great idea but at the end of the day, the Scout still has to complete the requirement.
-
Let's see. Humans can think things through. Other animal rely on instinct without thought. Seems like a big difference to me! As different as night and day! Good song OGE! I always liked the Animals!

or anything animals do as a reason to permit human behavior.

How could he not understand? While I agree the adult leadership dropped the ball here, this Scouts should also be held responsible for knowing what he needed to do to advance.
-
I find it sad that anyone attempts to compare animal behavior to human behavior.

I must not have been clear. I don't think he put false info on form and scout didn't attempt to deceive. He listed the position and dates served when he was a First Class scout and didn't understand this only gave him credit for Star advancement. When questioned, the scout confirmed he had served in the position as a First Class scout and had used the same period of service for credit for Life and now Eagle. Mike, If this Scout has read his handbook, he should know the requirements for each rank. It's fraud at best! Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10

If the Scout put a POR on his Eagle application that he knowingly didn't have, that is falsifying the application and the Scout should be held responsible for that.
-
Yeah oddly enough I agree with Bob that the handbook should be read. That said, I also agree with those who state the requirements are exactly what they say they are and all the rest is helpful information. Ed Mori A blessed Christmas to all

While youare correct the Scout did not fufill the requirement, the EBOR was also correct in recognizing that the problem was with the mismanagement of the advancement program by the Scoutmaster of the unit, and also recognizing that a denial of the advancemnt would have been overturned in appeal. So rather than spoil the scouts experience and memory of Scouting they approved the advancement and avoided the appeal. This is the kind of attitude that will destroy Scouting. If the requirement isn't met, the Scout doesn't advance! Plain & simple. By the time a Scout gets to this level, he should know what is expected of him. Ignorance is no excuse. The 2nd Class Requirement reads 5. Identify or show evidence of at least 10 kinds of wild animals (birds, mammals, reptiles, fish, mollusks) found in your community. The 1st Class Requirement reads 6. Identify or show evidence of at least 10 kinds of native plants found in your community. In both they read found in your community and I don't think they meant found in a museum in your community. The intent, in my opinion, is to have the Scouts become familiar with the wildlife & foliage in their community. Ed Mori A blessed Christmas to all.
