  1. Kudu does make a good point. Reading is not an easy badge to get! It requires as much if not more work than a lot of merit badges.
  2. Thanks Scouter760. Have you shared this with the father?
  3. Excommunication no longer lifts a Catholic from the obligation to attend Mass. However, he/she can not participate in any form. You mean to tell me if a Catholic is excommunicated they can attend mass, but just have to sit there? They can't kneel or stand or sing or recite any of the prayers or take communion or join the CYO basketball league or go to bingo? And what if they go to a Catholic church two boroughs away? How will they know? Is there picture sent around to all Catholic churches in the world? And what if they were absolved?
  4. So they were excommunicated. That doesn't mean they can't still attend church! It's a Catholic thing! Means nothing in the end.
  5. Had this happen, too. Remember, it's his award, not the Troops.
  6. Place someone in a no win situation & that's exactly what happens, no one wins!
  7. When like, you like, use labels, it like, treats people other than human, like I like almost shot coffee like out of my nose when I like read that!
  8. I ain't young but heck I got an opinion! There are thousands of ways to communicate these days. The best thing to do is set up more than one, let the Scouts & parents know what they are & explain they are responsible for reading the information. You will never find one best way to handle this.
  9. gwd-scouter, to clarify... he qualified for appointed positions, such as historian or librarian. He did not qualify for patrol leader. Please explain.
  10. So, Pack, are you saying that using labels to categorize people is fraught with peril as it objectifies the person while not recognizing their individuality? Hey I resemble that remark
  11. Interesting list. I would go to the Troop Committee and ask for removal of any form of leadership if the following were to occur repeatidly: 1. Smoking in view of Scouts While not a good thing this is not a reason to remove a leader. 2. Cursing in front of a Scout (everyday language and conversation; not "oh s%^t I just hit my thumb with a hammer") Why not "Oh sh*t I just hit my thumb with a hammer". It should be all or nothing. 3. Reapeated rudeness, disrespect, or degrading conversation to a Scout. Too subjective. What might be rude to one person isn't to another. 4. Inappropriate comments (ie: sex jokes, penis size jokes) I would agree. 5. Dangerous Driving (NOT DUI) Too hard to define. 6. Yelling No. This one makes no sense. 7. Violation of ANY ONE BSA procedure repeatedly It would depend on which BSA procedure is is. All are not equal. Things I would ask for immediant dismissal of a SM include: 1. Drinking in front of a Scout, at a campout, or in any form during a Scout event. (The only exception is if a Scout is at your house becuase he's friends with your son and sees you drinking. That's outside of Scouts) I would agree. 2. Striking a Scout including his own Scout I would agree. 3. Sexual Abuse of any Scout I would agree. 4. Illegal drug use I would agree. 5. Putting any Scout in a dangerous situation Too hard to define. There are some activities in Scouting that are dangerous in nature. 6. Discrimination Again, too hard to define. 7. Any fellony conviction This is a no-brainer. 8. Bad influence in general. Again, too hard to define. You put a lot of thought into this Eric5675. What do you feel would be good reasons to remove a youth leader (PS, SPL, etc.)?
  12. Good rule Gern. Nope haven't seen Slumdog Millionaire nor do I plan to. Did see the Curious Case of Benjamin Button. That was a good movie!
  13. Been there done that! The best thing to do, in my opinion, is nothing. So far, at least from your post, you haven't done anything to warrant this fathers opinion so there is nothing to fix or change.
  14. When? When the Scout asks for one. Where? Anywhere as long as YP is in place.
  15. Just to set the record straight - I think every Scout should own a uniform and a handbook. I think every Scout should know the Oath & Law by memory. Never stated anything different!
  16. Your menu will help dictate how much you should buy. That along with the number of tickets sold. One more, if people can come the day of the event & get breakfast without having already bought a ticket will need to be factored in. I'll have two eggs over easy, a rasher of bacon, home fries, buttered rye toast & coffee, thank you!
  17. How do you think it should be dealt with, Fugitive?
  18. Eagle92, I read the law & the section you quoted. I'm still not seeing where a hospital requiring a SSN is a violation of anything?
  19. If its necessary to defend ourselves from invasion and allow us to overthrow our own government, I say its protected by the 2nd amendment. Key word - If.
  20. Requiring the SSN to receive medical care is a violation of the FEDERAL E.M.T.A.L.A. law. And that is stated where in the FEDERAL E.M.T.A.L.A. law?
  21. You are correct Beav! Dynamite it is! What about C-4?
  22. They should be repeated at every meeting, youth and adult by every scout and scouter. Yes it should. But be aware that a Scout who is poorly prepared for the board, one who clearly has not achieved what his book says that he has, is a product, as much of his own merits as of the merits of those who have brought him the board, to those who have signed off his accomplishments without actually having them properly achieved." he doesn't bring the book, how does the BOR sign off in the book? And that poorly prepared Scout might be in full uniform! A Scout handbook is the Scout's record and is by no means official! The BOR signs off on the advancement form. That is official.
  23. Most of the time Scouts will show up for BOR's in uniform. And that's great! But requiring it is adding to the requirements. What if the Scout never owned a uniform or lost the handbook he was given at crossover & never bought another one? And what if this same Scout came to his BOR attired neatly, without a handbook & well prepared. Would you tell him "Sorry Billy, no BOR for you without a uniform AND handbook."? If you would, then shame on you.
  24. One mother said she "doesn't do deadlines" Wonder how that goes over when her car payment is due!
