National Policy Changing re: Unsupervised Patrol Outings
evmori replied to MarkS's topic in The Patrol Method
Whether legal or not, insured or not, official or not, does not matter. We all know we are talking about finding a way to get around this potential change in policy. I find teaching our boys ways to skirt laws to be against everything we are doing. If it is a law or policy, you have several choices. You can obey it, change it, or no longer belong to the group. But if we adults are going to debate how to bend the rule until just before it snaps, we may as well close up shop. If we go to the many "issues" discussions here, I believe this same problem is generally at the root. Shame on us for even thinking like that! Nothing being skirted! Nothing to skirt! The rules & regs of Scouting apply to what goes on in Scouting, not outside of Scouting! That would be like apply the laws of one township to the people of a different township! -
Here is the requirement you are speaking of 7. Do the following: a. Choose a charitable organization outside of Scouting that interests you and brings people in your community together to work for the good of your community. b. Using a variety of resources (including newspapers, fliers and other literature, the Internet, volunteers, and employees of the organization), find out more about this organization. c. With your counselor's and your parent's approval, contact the organization and find out what young people can do to help. While working on this merit badge, volunteer at least eight hours of your time for the organization. After your volunteer experience is over, discuss what you have learned with your counselor. I am a counselor for this MB & I require the Scout to volunteer for the organization he chooses in 7a.

National Policy Changing re: Unsupervised Patrol Outings

Sorry for piling on emb, but you are just plain wrong. If a group of kids want to get together & go camping, they can! This isn't an "unofficial" event! It's just a group of kids going camping! -
I'm with ya gwd-scouter! Expected behavior should be explained & then it should be met. If it's not met, there are consequences!

There are people on the advancement committee that are going as far as saying that a Scout can not accept cash donation, even unsolicited. Ask them to show you this in writing. So far in this thread, no one has.

In no particular order Cooking - open flame, Dutch Oven, camp stove, etc. Huge life skill. Camping - tent, lean-to, cabin, etc. Be prepared. First Aid - with all the cooking & camping, someone's gonna get hurt! Environmental Science - the more you know about where you are cooking & camping, the more you can enjoy. Pioneering - you can build a ton of cool stuff that will enhance your cooking & camping experience! Do I detect a theme?

No words said, just the blank stare! Hello! -
Well no pie & ice cream for you then!

Jerking people around is not nice~

I carry cash but I don't give it to panhandlers! I was at a news stand that sells lottery tickets buying s newspaper & there was a lady who panhandles every day there buying lottery tickets!

Amazingly, you are still completely missing the point. This entire thread is based on how the BSA defines "physically strong". The BSA doesn't include "big fat slobs" in their definition so that is why I'm not talking about that. Get it? Sure it does! Right here! Take care of your body so that it will serve you well for an entire lifetime. A big fat slop isn't taking care of his/her body so it will serve them well! Get it? There's ice cream to go with that pie! Butter Brickle~

Patrol Leadership: Management Style Vs Scoutcraft Style
evmori replied to Mafaking's topic in The Patrol Method
I've seen what OGE describes a lot! I like to call it the "Steel Mill Mentality". Promote those who do & know little & they are less likely to screw things up. I would agree leadership & managing are different. A good leader should know how to manage but a good manager might not know how to lead. -
Part of the definition quoted in the original post. Take care of your body so that it will serve you well for an entire lifetime. You seem to want to focus on why smokers & drinkers are still allowed to be Scouters & homosexuals aren't. To me that's pushing a personal agenda since you are ignoring the fact that big fat slobs are allowed to be Scouters yet that doesn't fit the definition of "physically fit" either. Who wants pie?

Knife and whoops!(This message has been edited by evmori) -
I agree that "physically strong" is affected by the other factors that you mentioned. I never said they weren't. I'm not taking those into consideration in this discussion because they aren't defined by the Oath and the entire focus of this discussion is what the BSA includes specifically in its definition. Since none of those other things that you listed are in that definition, they have no place in this conversation. You just can't pick & chose what factors you want to consider! And just because they aren't specifically defined in the oath doesn't lessen their importance. An overweight slob is just as physically unfit as a two-pack a day smoker! This whole thread is someone pushing an agenda, not a debate on what physically strong is.

I need help - I cannot stop thinking about stuff

I-I-I get all-all-all-all shaky if-if-if-if I-I-I-I don't post-post-post for a day-day. -
I'm not going to tell you anything like that, aquaticeagle! You seem to be stuck on the BSA not enforcing one point of the Scout Oath yet being physically strong is also effected by other factors besides smoking & drinking but you don't seem to want to take those into consideration. And my point is if you are gonna make that type of stand, ya better be ready to apply the same logic to the entire Oath. If not, you are pushing nothing more than you own personal agenda. Smoke 'em if ya got 'em~ OGE - Thanks! It was the Shakers I was thinking of! Actually visited one of their communities in Kentucky! Interesting!

Does the BSA kick out overweight people? Do they boot those who have had premarital sex? Have they booted leaders who are adulterers? To they kick out very low IQ people or those who are mentally deficient? My father-in-law is 89 years old & has had both knees, shoulders & a hip replaced! He quit smoking 50 years ago & only had an occasional beer! His body isn't serving him well & his life isn't over! What exactly is your point? Do you want homosexuals to be Scout leaders?
-
Again, the discussion of this thread is not what "physically strong" means but why the BSA chooses to ignore that very specific part of the Oath while enforcing the part that is very ambiguous and not specific. How did the BSA ignore this? Or is this just your opinion? What does physically strong mean to you?

If there is nothing in writing, then it's bubkas!

Do over! Don't hold the next vote without all present!

Horizon, Nice copy & paste. While I agree, smoking is harmful, it effects everyone differently. And I agree with the "No Alcohol" at Scouting events. Never said I didn't. aquaticeagle, Do you agree with what you copied & pasted in the opening thread? Plus, a PM is meant to be PRIVATE hence the name Private Message.

I'm still trying to figure out you point! Being physically strong doesn't mean being a health nut or a body builder. You want to dispute how someone can smoke & have a few beers & be physically strong?
