  1. Time to go over his head & get 'er done! All this guy is trying to do is stall long enough so your son ages out. This guy doesn't have the stones to be a stand up guy!
  2. No YPT violation! Facebook & the other social networking sites are excellent communication tools.
  3. Bad parenting happens all the time! And a lot of times, the Scout leaders are the ones who have to deal with bad parenting and that poses a problem for the Scout leaders. In most cases, it's better if the parents don't go on Scout outings.
  4. The wheels shoulda been caught at the initial inspection & the car DQ'ed then. But since it was missed, or maybe the wheels were changed after the initial inspection, the DQ at the end was OK.
  5. And what if your son decides he doesn't want to join this Troop? Requiring non unit members to participate in fundraising doesn't seem right.
  6. If they wear hearing aids and can hear when someone talks, then they are not deaf. It would seem that we are playing word definition games here. No word play. They are deaf. There are different stages of deaf. Both of my kids were born deaf. They both wear hearing aids. They both speak. They are both deaf. They are not hard of hearing. There is a big difference between hard of hearing & deaf.
  7. Please quit lumping deaf & mute together, Stosh. You even said they have emitted vocal sounds to get your attention. Therefore, not mute! When deaf kids try to speak, the reactions of kids who don't know them can be mortifying. Trying to speak & speaking are completely different, Kudu. I know lots of deaf kids who do speak. They don't try, they know how to speak. If a person can "hear" you by calling their name, by definition they are hard of hearing, not deaf. Wrong! Both of my kids are severely to profoundly deaf and they both speak. They both wear hearing aids and can hear when you talk to them. cumbersome hearing aids This ain't the 70's! Hearing aids are no longer cumbersome! You really need to get your facts straight, Stosh, before you make totally incorrect statements.
  8. when a deaf person is reading your signing they are looking you in the eyes. No they aren't! They are watching your hands! You don't sign with your eyes! Yes they do pay attention to your body language but they rely on primarily watching your hands. And I bet those deaf/mutes did make some vocal sounds! However, catching the attention of a deaf person who speaks and lip-reads excellently cannot hear you calling out to them when they are not looking at you. If a deaf person speaks, they can hear something and you may be able to get their attention by calling their name. I can with my kids.
  9. That's exactly why Lisa. Don't lump deaf & mute together, Stosh. Both my kids are severely to profoundly deaf and they both speak. I know lots of deaf people who speak very well and lots that don't speak at all. I don't know any who are mute.
  10. Make sure this boy uses ASL and not signed English. There is a big difference! I just thought of something else. Deaf people tend to be very black & white. What I mean is they don't usually have a good sense of humor & usually take everything literally.(This message has been edited by evmori)
  11. There is no set format to an Eagle COH. You can do & say almost anything you want.

This thread should be shut down.
  13. Good question Lisa. How to get their attention depends on where you are. If it's a group setting sometimes waiving you hand or pointing to them works. At a table, a tap hard enough to be felt but not hard enough to be annoying will work. If they have their back to you a gentle touch usually works. Now if this deaf boy wears hearing aids, which both my kids do, calling their name might work. It really depends on how deaf they are & what their primary form of communication is. Ed
  14. Helicopter parents - bad. Genuinely concerned parents - good. There is a huge difference.
  15. Both of my kids are severely to profoundly deaf. They both talk but can be difficult to understand at times. They both sign, too. I would treat this boy the same as the other boys in the Troop. From your initial post, being deaf is the only problem this boy has so making any special accommodations for him are unnecessary. When you talk to the group, make sure he is in the front & can see you lips. When you are talking to hem, always face him. If you need to get his attention, lightly touch him so as not to startle him. My son earned his Eagle and loved Scouting. No special accommodations were made for him. We never had an interpreter along on camping trips. He did have an interpreter for his Eagle BOR.
  16. Something doesn't seem right here. You wife was dusting & hit something on the keyboard & it crashed your PC? Did anyone try another keyboard? It is possible the motherboard is shot but if your computer is relatively new, I doubt it.
  17. I gotta agree with mn_scout. Younger siblings can require a lot of work and can be a huge distraction. They shouldn't be allowed.

    global Lysistrata! Interesting concept!
  19. I was at a local craft store with my wife the other day & they were selling pinewood cars that were custom cut with plastic additions that could be added and on the package it stated "BSA axles & wheels will fit". When I was with a Pack, we gave the boys pinewood cars as a Christmas present. That way, everyone had the same amount of time to make their car! You will always have those dads who feel their son has to win.
  20. bksct, Why are you yelling? Why would they go camping without an adult? Because patrol camping is encouraged by the BSA.
  21. Keep you on your toes! Non-issue since this is to be removed.
  22. Sorry but if Scoutmaster Billy stands up at a Scout meeting and announces Tommy Tenderfoot & his buds are going paintballing on Saturday & if anyone wants to go to let Tommy Tenderfoot know doesn't make it a Scouting outing!
  23. Not sure this is even an issue, SR540Beaver. If it's announced at a Scout unit meeting that doesn't make it a Scouting event!
