Yeah Merlyn you are good a lumping stuff together! Your list of public schools comes to mind!
-
Does anyone else hear that old Billy Preston song "Will It Go Round in Circles"? Did ya ever think that was because they BSA was showing which specific organizations chartered units? Duh! So public schools were NOT the #1 charter partner of the BSA! It was and still is churches! Gotta get it correct!
-
You seem to be missing the point, Merlyn. The units charted by the LDS & Methodists & Presbyterian & Catholic & Lutheran & Episcopalian & Assembly Of God are all chartered by churches. Add them all up! I'd bet the number is bigger than those chartered by public schools in units & members making your statement bunk! The link or file I am referring to, Merlyn, is the one you quoted here The BSA listed public schools as their single largest sponsoring group in 1998; "churches" wasn't a single group, they were listed as Catholic, LDS, etc. So blame the BSA for the way they categorized sponsors.

I edited that previous post while you were posting your question, Merlyn. Sorry. The BSA listed public schools as their single largest sponsoring group in 1998; "churches" wasn't a single group, they were listed as Catholic, LDS, etc. So blame the BSA for the way they categorized sponsors. The one that backs up this claim. If you don't have a link, I'll take the file & do the heavy lifting.
-
Still waiting on that link Merlyn! Well, since the LDS is a church and so are the Methodists and Presbyterians & Catholics, etc, sound like they would have more units chartered & members as a total! Still waiting on that link Merlyn. (This message has been edited by evmori)

The BSA listed public schools as their single largest sponsoring group in 1998; "churches" wasn't a single group, they were listed as Catholic, LDS, etc. So blame the BSA for the way they categorized sponsors. Now that is funny! Because "churches" wasn't listed as a single group, the monumental leap was made that public schools were the largest sponsoring group! Now if that isn't spinning the data to fit your cause I don't know what it! And, without knowing what the actual data is, I would bet an outright lie! Merlyn, post the link to the data you used & I will do what you should have done, actually figure it out! And I will report back even if you were correct in you giant assumption.

Sure they can multi-task! But are they able to?
-
Gern, Nothing wrong with the church & state commingling as long as the state doesn't try to force a state religion & the church doesn't try to force a state religion.
-
But where religious freedoms, in their readings, conflict with civil liberties, the ACLU will go with civil liberties because, as I read their focus, religious freedoms are a subset of civil liberties. And therein lies part of the problem. Religious freedoms are equal to all other freedoms, not a subset. The doctrine of separation of church and state is a lot muddier reading than the second amendment, IMO. Nowhere in the Constitution does anything state the state & church should be separate.
-
Good point vol_scouter. It seems ever since the Dale case, the ACLU has had the BSA in it's sights & is looking for anything it can find to get them for. The cases they take always seem to stretch to find a point they can defend & these cases take forever to be resolved.
-
I agree with the others.
-
Great news Ms Summer! Just wondering, when you have your sons Eagle Court of Honor, are you inviting anyone from the Troop leadership?
-
SR540Beaver, I don't listen to talk radio nor do I read chain e-mails. And Rush is a moron! Vicki, Did you even read what vol_scouter posted> The ACLU was founded by a communist! Yeah they have defend some good causes but for the most part, they interpret the Constitution to fit what ever they want it to fit! They don't have the interest of the American public at heart.
-
I don't think anyone is advocating letting them slide through. I know I'm not! All I am saying is requiring a Scout to bring their handbook to a BOR is adding to the requirements!
-
Also, the ACLU serves a worthy purpose as they work to make sure our constitutional rights are guaranteed across the board to all people. RAOTFL!
-
FireKat, Yes it is! But it happens!
-
Doing othewise teaches the boy that others are responsible for his personal affairs. No it doesn't. The Scout is responsible for his own advancement & keeping his own records whether in his handbook or on a million Post It's! But if the only records are kept by the Scout then there is the potential for all the records to be lost or destroyed and the only one who suffers is the Scout.
-
Sure do! One year we had a Scout drop a cast iron griddle on his toes. No damage! But a delightful dance was witnessed! Hence, the Dancing Griddle Award was given!
-
Heaven forbid a Scout loses his handbook & some of these units have no record of anything! The one who will be hurting will be the Scout! Just because a unit is boy run doesn't mean the adults just sit around & twiddle their thumbs.

Bring back Campfires at Campouts
evmori replied to Buffalo Skipper's topic in Camping & High Adventure
Camping ain't camping without a campfire! In my opinion, that is the best part of camping! -
I've always said the ACLU is neither civil or American.
-
Our difference is "most official" v "primary." Compared to Ms Summer's SM and Committee, we're in the small potatoes department Wanna bet this is how Ms Summer's sons unit operates? This might be small potatoes but it can lead to big potato casserole!

Thanks pack! Hey what about "No Child Left Behind"?

Great ooglie booglies!

The official advancement record should be with the unit's Advancement Chair. The HB is the Scout's record. When I was the Advancement Chair I would periodically print out my records & pass them out to each Scout to check for accuracy. That way, if there were any deficiencies, they were caught & corrected. The advancement records I kept were the official records for our unit.
