  1. Publicly subsidizing an organization that discriminates against atheists, Ed. Atheist taxpayers are forced to support a program they are excluded from based solely on their religious views. All taxpayers are forced to support programs they can be excluded from. What makes atheists different?
  2. Short answer - Yes. Longer answer - Yes the Scoutmaster does.
  3. I realize violating the rights of atheists means nothing to you. What atheists rights were violated, Merlyn?
  4. Attendance is all well and good, and surely an effective performance will involve attendance. But the measure needs to be on the level of performance acheived, NOT how many meetings he attended. Every boy in the patrol/troop can attend and warm a chair with his butt, but that has absolutely nothing to do with performance responsibilities of the position. Plus, a goodly part of the position responsibility does NOT require any attendance at all. A SPL or ASPL or PL should not "warm a chair with his butt". These youth leaders are the ones that should be leading by example. They need to be there & actually do something when they are. If they are "warming a chair with their butts" then it is time to get them up to speed or remove them from their POR & replace them with someone who will do the job. To be effective, they have to be there!
  5. I think Basementdweller is right on the money. The guy made a serious mistake & is now paying the consequences.
  6. True attendance doesn't equal performance but to perform one must be there! The SPL & ASPL & PL's of a Troop should be expected to be present all the time! They should be setting the example. If they aren't there, what impression does this give to the rest of the youth in the Troop?
  7. It sounds like the adults in this unit are afraid of the youth failing & then that makes them look bad. They might be surprised at how well the youth would do if they would just get out of the way! Yeah the youth will make mistakes and that is when the adults step in & mentor the youth on how to correct the mistake & make provisions for preventing the same mistake in the future!
  8. Scouting won't stop in the City of Cheesesteak! And there is a good chance the Council won't have to move!
  9. Boys don't respond to adult written rules in adult documents. Huh? Correct me if I am mistaken, but aren't all the BSA written rules written by adults in adult documents? And don't the boys follow them?
  10. Yeah tell them no! Cash on the barrel head only!
  11. You need ask for approval to wear your uniforms during fundraising. This can be approved at the Council level.
  12. Shouldn't the responsibility to be active be the Scout's responsibility? After all, they are the ones earning ranks, not the adults. The adults should be supplying the opportunity for the Scouts to advance & the Scouts should be taking advantage of those opportunities to earn ranks and by doing so staying active! Why is the responsibility placed on the adults?
  13. No, you got it because you had 3,000 units make up 3,000 different definitions in 3,000 different sets of "bylaws" that failed to address the real problem of adults failing in their mission. We don't fulfill our mission by making up rules to filter out the "unworthy" boys. Same old line, FScouter. And again, way off the mark.
  14. I can sorta understand the number of adults with the boys if this was an extremely dangerous hike. If not, the two deep leadership requirement doesn't mean two adults. I'd find or start a new unit. You will never change these guys! Heck, we use to go on hiking weekends with three total adults & 10 Scouts!
  15. John, That definition isn't Registered = Active Granted, it's not much more but it is better.
  16. We got active because National never defined active! Hence the cheesy definition!
  17. We were told that the bishop of one Catholic diocese, which covered an entire state, was totally adamant that everybody in his diocese WOULD attend Mass every Sunday -- no exceptions. There would be no allowances, no waivers, no nothing. So the people in his diocese had little wiggle room. I know this is a hijack but I gotta ask. And if you don't attend mass, what happens?
  18. In this district it has been common for the rules to change suddenly, without warning, and for no apparent reason (not, thankfully, to include letters though). I can understand how a leader can be unaware of at least some of the rules, some of the time. Not just in that district, eh? This happens all over. And hence the problem. If the DAC's stuck to the requirements, there wouldn't be this problem. There is too much open to interpretation. If National would spell out EXACTLY what was required, a lot of these problems would go away!
  19. Are you planning on burning the flags? If so, cut up some of the flags & pass out pieces for each person in attendance to place in the fire. Cutting them up by the stripes & starfield is a good idea. Before everyone does this, have someone read "Remember Me". I'll post it at the end. Have a bunch of hankies ready! We've done this and it is very emotional. REMEMBER ME? Some people call me Old Glory, others call me the Star Spangled Banner, but whatever they call me, I am YOUR Flag, the Flag of the United States of America....something has been bothering me, so I thought I might talk it over with you... because it is about you and me... I remember when people would line up on both sides of the street to watch a parade, and naturally, I was leading it, proudly waving in the breeze. When your Daddy saw me coming, he immediately removed his hat and placed it over his heart, up against his left shoulder....remember. And you, I remember you. Standing there straight as a soldier, You didn't have a hat, but you were giving the right salute...and remember little sister? Not to be out done, she was saluting the same as you with her right hand over her heart...remember? What happened? I'm still the same old Flag. Oh, I have a few more Stars since you were a boy. A lot more blood has been shed since those parades of long ago. But now, I don't feel as proud as I used to... When I come down your street, you just stand there with your hands in your pockets, and I may get a small glance and then ; you look away. Then I see the little children running around and shouting...they don't seem to know who I am... I saw one man take his hat off., then look around, and when he didn't see anybody with theirs off, he quickly put his back on... Is it a sin to be patriotic anymore? Have you forgotten what I stand for and where I've been?... Anzio, Guadalcanal, Korea, Vietnam, Kuwait and now Iraq. Take a look at the Memorial Honor Rolls of those who never came back in order to keep this Republic FREE. One Nation Under God... When you salute me. you are actually saluting them. Well, it won't be long before I'll be coming down your street again, so when you see me, stand straight, place your right hand over your heart, and I'll salute you, by waving back...and forth....and I'll know that.. YOU REMEMBERED!!!!
  20. DAR for the purposes of this thread = District Advancement Rep! Yins is funny!
  21. Is the Eagle advisor the DAR? If not, then yup they are making their own rules! After your son earns his Eagle, run fast & far!
  22. CA, After you give at least 30 letters to this individual, please remind them that letters of recommendation are not required.
  23. Calico makes an excellent point! It would seem for some reason, the SM has it in for this Scout. This is just wrong. And the committee more or less endorsed the SM's actions by backing him up! There are serious problems with the adult leadership in this unit & the only ones who will suffer are the Scouts.
