  1. Merlyn spoke an untruth and no one called him a l**r? Glad to see no one stooped to that level.
  2. So how does banning cell phones accomplish the Purpose, Mission and Vision of the BSA? The BSA bans things like paintball, laser tag, organized football, etc. How is that is keeping with the Purpose, Mission and Vision of the BSA? Not allowing cell phones doesn't hinder a youth form the opportunity to make ethical choices. They have the choice to follow the rule created by the unit or not follow the rule created by the unit. What if the BSA banned cell phones for youth members like they ban other things? Would we still be having the same discussion?
  3. If the attitudes on this thread are prevalent then the world is passing the BSA by. Its core values and role in our society will be lost as its further marginalized by small issues like this. I love technology. I use it every day! I love how it has advanced! But there is a time & place for it! And on a camping trip, the need is minimal!
  4. Beavah, as long as you advocate that public schools ought to be able to violate the civil rights of atheists, I'll keep pointing it out. What civil rights are being violated?
  5. It's interesting there is nothing on your council web site regarding this.
  6. Cell phones seem to be a sore subject. It seems parents want their sons to have them so in case of an emergency they will be able to contact someone, presumably the parents. What seems to happen is the boys end up texting their friends & playing games on them. Now this doesn't always happen! And is seems that mom & dad want to be able to "hover" from a distance! I don't see the need for boys to have cell phones on outings. The adults usually have at least one! And that should suffice.
  7. I'm still waiting to see how chartering a BSA unit by a public school is violating an atheists rights.
  8. I'd bet there are a lot of other Troop policies that contradict your family policies, too. Either conform or move along.
  9. Beavah, you, Fred, Ed, and lots of others have repeatedly made statements where atheists should or ought to be discriminated against by their own government and be treated as second-class citizens. Your excuses don't wash. When have I made such a statement? Your own attitude is similar, as you've often advocated that public schools ought to be able to violate the civil rights of atheist students. Still waiting to find out how the civil rights of atheists are being violated.
  10. I'm not Fred, Merlyn, but if the public school official read the charter agreement they would know the conditions of membership.
  11. Because they teach children that atheists are second-class citizens Your interpretation of a BSA statement. and they dishonestly try to get the government to aid them in this. I'm gonna ask how and you are going to post that old public school charter thingy again forgetting the public schools that chartered BSA units are just as guilty of what you say they aren't allowed to do. And plenty of BSA members seem to loath atheists and think they don't deserve equal rights. Got some figures & facts to back that up or is that just your opinion?
  12. I understand what you are saying, John. Still waiting for chapter & verse that Eagle is the only lifetime rank of the Boy Scouting program.
  13. Does this mean the Explorer program, the largest BSA program that includes gays and atheists, is the new rightwing standard-bearer for conservative BSA supporters? What do you think Merlyn?
  14. So because there is not a permanent recognition for a rank is the reasoning you are using? So since I was a Scoutmaster & I have received the Scoutmaster Award, I'm always a Scoutmaster? Is that how it works?
  15. What a lot of scouters fail to recognize is that the basic core of what scouting is and has been for the last 100 years is archaic and irrelevant to todays youth techno centered and self centered exsistence. Unless scouting is totally reinvented it will NEVER appeal to the youth of today. I totally disagree with this statement. How is learning to be self-reliant & confident archaic? I think the problem is exactly what was stated - self-centered existence.
  16. I'm curious as to why these parents are dissatisfied. Is this Pack doing something they shouldn't be? If you are going to sign this group up (which I wouldn't recommend) I would tell them they MUST attend training BEFORE they are allowed to participate in any aspect of the Pack.
  17. Yup that is what I am suggesting! And it should help out with record keeping! No more same number units in multiple councils! No need to change unit numbers when districts merge. Everyone is filed alphabetically by their last name & membership ID number! This will never happen since the unit numbers are a money maker for the BSA.
  18. I would go with your initial inclination and say "No".
  19. DeanRx, #1 Excellent idea! #2 I agree! When we over think things we tend to get our nickers in a twist over things we shouldn't.
  20. Joe doesnt have the right to authorize medical treatment while a legal guardian has a court order allowing him to do that among other things. Well, Joe might have the right! He might be the legal guardian! Don't get caught up in the wording! I'd bet you if Little Billy falls & breaks his whosits and Joe takes Little Billy to the ER, Joe will be the one the docs talk to & get to sign papers!(This message has been edited by evmori)
  21. Hey! There will be none of this tolerating anything! We are Scouters! The biggest bigots of all! Pass that pie, Stosh!
  22. We seem to be getting wrapped up in a bunch of nothing. Little Billies legal guardian can stay in the same tent with little Billy! So can Little Billies brother!
  23. You gotta get out more JoeBob!
