If you can't sign him off on Scout Spirit, don't.

Before this goes any farther, I would have the SPL have a talk with him about how a Boy Scout Troop and the Patrols function. If the current behavior continues after this chat, I would have as sit down with the Scout, SPL, & the Scout's mom & dad to explain the situation & see if you can come up with a workable solution.

Gutterbird, I commend you for going the extra mile for this Scout. It seems there is something going on in his life that is getting in the way of Scouting.

Religious services on overnight trips
evmori replied to True Believer's topic in Open Discussion - Program
Yeah I got a chuckle too, shortridge. Most overnight camps don't have shower facilities! On one of our trips to Gettysburg on the way back to camp after we finished the Johnny Reb hike, we stopped at a Catholic church in Gettysburg to attend mass. This was on a Saturday night. Since we were a little ripe, we sat in the back. Boy did we get the stares from the people in church! You woulda thought we were a bunch of lepers! We had our Class A's on but we still had some trail dust on us. -
There’ll be no tent for God at Camp Dawkins (UK)

My my! Hostile aren't we, Merlyn. Again with the name calling. Stating chairs don't exist is a false therefore not the same as stating unicorns don't exist. Everyone sits in a chair, has seen a chair, etc. I don't know if anyone has ever seen a unicorn, but I doubt it. Unicorns are know to be mythical creatures. Chairs are everyday pieces of furniture. Snipes are actual birds wahooker! -

Stating chairs don't exist is the same as stating this forum doesn't exist. We all know both do. Hence, the statement is bunk. Is that what this lovely little camp is going to teach kids? How to disprove the obvious? What is sad, Merlyn, is you can't acknowledge the existence of something you can't prove. Time to take off the blinders. My point - You can't prove God doesn't exist. -

Your example of the chair as a negative is bunk! Just because you haven't seen or felt or can't see or feel something doesn't mean it doesn't exist. It doesn't mean it does exist, either. Believing in thinks you can't see & feel is called faith! And I have faith God exists. I know you don't, Merlyn. If it can't be proven you don't seem to want to acknowledge it's existence. And that is sad. -

Hence my point is made! This is sorta like asking the question - If a tree falls in the woods and no one is around to hear it does it make a noise? I'm sure there is a purpose to sitting around & pondering such things but I'm not sure it's a good one! -

Then disprove there is a God, Merlyn.(This message has been edited by evmori) -
You expect the AC to record every requirement from every Scout as it is earned? When I was the AC for my Troop, I reviewed all the handbooks on a monthly basis to keep my records current. Once the initial loading of the data is done, the updating takes a minimal amount of time. So in answer to your question, yes.

The unicorns are not necessarily a metaphor for God, they are to show kids that you cant prove a negative, We are not trying to bash religion, but it encourages people to believe in a lot of things for which there is no evidence. And you can't disprove a negative either. -

I can understand the issue with Catholics and having to attend church. I don't think attending a non-Catholic church or participating in a Scouts Own service will cover the Catholic requirement. I don't think the Presbyterian CO would have too many complaints about the Presbyterian Scouts attending a Catholic church. After all, they were attending church. Tradition or not, if this is driving a wedge in the Troop, something should be done to remove the wedge. Maybe hold a Scouts Own service on Saturday night & for those who that won't "cover", let the families deal with the issue when their son returns home on Sunday. -
Stick to your guns and keep your eyes on the CC!

It seems the district and council decisions were made based on one-sided information. Why? It seems that's all they have! I'm starting to wonder why this Scout has not defended himself. The people making these rulings actually have made the correct rulings based on the information they have. I know if I was in the same position as this Scout, I would be defending myself like there was no tomorrow. Unless I had no defense.

I'm beginning to wonder who is driving your bus, xlpanel. This is very troll like.
-
And if you have a competent Advancement Chair, this information should be readily available & verifiable!
-
You certainly have a skewed view of reality xlpanel. Maybe not enough time in the real world & too much time behind the keyboard is to blame.
-
mdsummer45, Is it possible that your son did or said something that you don't know about? I'm not making any accusations but for this to go as far as it has with the same results makes me wonder???????

They are the true leaders. The "leader" is actually just a figurehead for the strategists and minds behind him. Do you really believe that? If the leaders are the strategists, why are they in the background?
-
Not every boy is a leader. I do feel to be a good leader one must 1st be a good follower.

Tell him beer is illegal but not porn? Both are illegal for people under age. No one is suggesting you go off on the kid. Just take the porn away & tell mom & dad! If you let him keep it & not inform mom & dad, what's to stop him from bringing it next time, xlpanel? And if Billy ends up not liking you because you were doing the right thing, oh well! Kids want boundaries & rules from adults. They don't want adults to be their friends.
-
I'm beginning to wonder the same thing Nike. mdsummer45, What exactly happened? We don't seem to have the whole story.
-
John-in-Nevada, I agreed with your up to Finally, Scout Spirit is about what happens the other 167 hours each week. If our young men are living the oath and law in their lives away from us, then they're living it on the trail, in camp, or at the Troop meeting. Scout Spirit is something that happens 24/7/365 whether in or out of Scouting.
-
mdsummer45, It sounds like you have run up against the "Good Old Boy" network. I would call National now & get the details on filing your appeal there.

If you're not doing it for all - you sure as sh*t shouldn't be singling her out just because she chose to sign both lines. Why not? You have a form that no one can read and a kid with a lot of medical problems and a mom who signed as parent & physician. How often does this happen? Probably not too often. I really abhor the "if you do it for one you have to do it for everyone" attitude! It's right up there with zero tolerance policies. No room for something out of the ordinary.
