There is a good reason our Founding Fathers put into the Constitution a clause for the seperation of Church and State. There is nothing in the Constitution about the separation of church and state.

It sounds like Mr Balzano forgot to engage his brain before opening his mouth!

That's almost in my backyard! -
If the American flag is going to be displayed in a church sanctuary, it should be displayed properly. If it will not be displayed properly, then it should be removed.

When I was a SM that's what we did! It really empowers the youth leadership.

Hey Ed, I'm free on Mondays. I have about 13 weeks vacation saved up. How about you not working on Mondays and you taking the next 13 weeks off? Without pay! While I volunteer to do your job. Heck we have a lot of forum members from around the Pittsburgh area, we might be able to just lay you off! Why would I do that Eamonn? You would still be getting paid! And that is not what happened here! This union guy thinks he has way too much clout!
-
My claims may be unsupported Lisa, but they could very well be accurate. Rank & file union employees won't start their own project! The volunteer workers did not replace the union employees.

Horse hockey NW. The work was done by volunteers. If this was so important to the union, why didn't the union do their job? Maybe if they had there wouldn't have been so many displaced.

We have sorta had some debate regarding the placement of the American flag in our sanctuary. The American flag and Christian flag are both on display in our sanctuary. For a period of time, they were both in a corner in the front of the sanctuary. Then someone moved them to a more predominant place but placed the American flag on the right and Christian flag on the left (facing the sanctuary as the vantage point). I asked our senior pastor about this and he claimed this was a decision by the session. I explained when the American flag is displayed with another flag it is to take the place of prominence and should be moved. He told me this was a very sensitive issue & asked that I not move it. The next time I was in the sanctuary (a couple days later) I noticed the flag had been moved. Another Scouter and close friend in our congregation told me he moved it! That was about two months ago & no one has moved it back yet!

They should shut up because they have no point! It' like shouting at the rain! The union has no control who volunteers for anything!

What happens if I sign this form?

So, a Scout is assigned a POR. First month, nothing done, counseled, promises to do better. Second month, same thing. Now, based on the "pass or fire" mentality, the SM has to make that decision - do I continue to work with him, or remove him? The box checkers would say, "He has served two months, and if you remove him from the position, he only needs to serve 4 months in another POR to earn the 6 months requirement," even though he hasn't done anything. So, yes, according to the box checkers, they have to be doing the job right out of the gate. If I had done that with our Historian, we would not have ended up with our results. If it works for you, fine. So if the Scout does nothing for prior to removal from his POR, has he "actively served" in that POR at all? I say no. -
Here's it in a nutshell. Did the Eagle project replace work that was planned for and funded by the city, thus putting people out of work and unable to feed their families? Or, was the project in addition to what the city was willing and able to pay for such work, thus not putting people out of work and unable to feed their families? I think it was the latter. But if it was the former, the city has got some splaining to do. If it was the latter, the union should just shut up. The union should shut up regardless!

The performance wasn't acceptable, yet your SM did not remove the Scout from the POR. What lesson in Character did that send? Why does he have to be removed from the POR? It is possible the SM was giving this Scout every chance possible to fulfill his POR but the Scout never did. The lesson this sends is the SM is willing to give you every chance possible yet you failed to step up to the plate and take advantage of that. -
Total bupkis! The union was not stepped on or looked over. Nor do they have any say on who volunteers to do what! Some one outta take these guys out back!

Back in my Cubmaster day, the only thing I expected the parents to do at Pack meetings was pay attention and take charge of the Cub's siblings so they were not running amuck! Other than that, if they wanted to participate in saying the Pledge or other things their sons were reciting, that was up to them.(This message has been edited by evmori)

This seems unusually long for an appeal! There should have been an answer by now.

I feel the involvement of non-registered parents should be to get their boys to the meetings/outing/etc, and pick them up on time. If they attend the meetings, they should not be involved in what their son's do but be supportive of the adult leadership in the unit. If parents want to be more involved in their son's unit, fill out the form & pony up the registration fee & get trained.

Excellent lesson. Thanks for sharing!

Ignorance is no excuse, Merlyn, but you already know that.

Not in my opinion, Ed. I'd say most school administrators didn't realize that the BSA expected their schools to actually break the law. Now that's contrary to when you posted Ed, I agree that school officials were wrong to sign any BSA charters, and that these school officials were either acting dishonestly or out of ignorance. I don't think the BSA can claim ignorance, so that leaves dishonest.
-
And let's not forget, Merlyn, those public schools share equally in the blame you are assigning to the BSA!
